There is no universal free-token claim: eligibility, models, limits, and privacy terms depend on the provider and account. Check offers in the provider’s own dashboard, read any data-sharing condition before opting in, and monitor token usage separately from charges. OpenAI’s documented offer requires eligible organizations to share qualifying project traffic; Google’s Gemini API has a separate, model-specific free tier.
Check whether your account qualifies before claiming anything
Use the provider’s official account interface rather than a third-party “free token” site. An offer may be conditional on organization eligibility, selected models, a quota period, or a data-use choice; an advertised allowance is not proof that your account receives it.
OpenAI: check the organization’s data-sharing settings
- Sign in to the OpenAI API organization and open its data-sharing settings.
- Look for the message “You’re eligible for free daily usage on traffic shared with OpenAI.” If it is not shown, OpenAI says the organization is not eligible at that time. The offer and model eligibility can change, so check the live page. OpenAI’s data-sharing guidance.
- Before enabling anything, review the input/output sharing setting. It is disabled by default. An owner can enable it for all projects or selected projects; when enabled, inputs and outputs sent to OpenAI on those projects are shared with OpenAI.
- If the organization qualifies, enabling sharing enrolls qualifying traffic automatically; the documentation does not describe a separate claim code. Only enabled projects and listed models qualify. The organization also needs a positive account balance to use OpenAI models and the complimentary tokens.
- Confirm the setting and then check activity in the Usage Dashboard.
This is an account-specific offer, not a guaranteed grant of free usage. OpenAI’s documentation lists daily quotas shared across groups of models. It describes caps of up to 1 million tokens per day in one group (250,000 for usage tiers 1–2) and up to 10 million per day in another (2.5 million for tiers 1–2). These are conditional caps for eligible shared traffic, not amounts every account receives. Usage beyond a combined group limit is billed at normal rates, and a request that would push the day’s total over its limit may be billed in full. Check the account’s current eligible models and terms before relying on a quota.

Google Gemini API: inspect the free tier and model limits
New accounts can use a free tier for certain Gemini API models, subject to model-specific rate limits. Check usage and quotas in Google AI Studio, and verify the limits for the model you intend to use. Moving to the paid tier requires linking billing; prepaid accounts must maintain a positive credit balance. Google’s $300 Cloud welcome credit generally cannot pay for Gemini API or AI Studio usage for accounts opened after March 2, 2026. Track token activity separately from money
OpenAI: compare Usage, Costs, and credit grants
In the OpenAI Usage Dashboard, token activity and charges answer different questions. Complimentary tokens count in usage totals but do not appear as a cost. Select both input and output token metrics to see the full token activity; the complimentary traffic is identified under the “data sharing incentive tier” service-tier grouping. The dashboard reports in UTC, and viewing it requires organization ownership or the relevant usage permission. Inspect usage on an individual API response
API responses include a usage object, but field names for input and output counts differ between Chat Completions and Responses. For streamed Chat Completions, request stream_options: {"include_usage": true} to receive a final usage chunk. An interrupted stream may not deliver that final chunk, so its absence does not establish that no tokens were used. Consult the OpenAI usage guidance for the relevant endpoint details.

Anthropic: use Console usage and billing views
Anthropic’s Claude Console provides a Usage page that can filter by model, date, and API key, show input/output totals, and export CSV. The Billing page shows credit balance and usage. Claude API accounts generally use prepaid credits, which expire one year after purchase; these are purchased credits, not free tokens. Anthropic’s usage and cost documentation.
Prevent unexpected charges when a free allowance ends
Review OpenAI prepaid settings
OpenAI’s prepaid billing uses free credits before purchased credits when an account has them. During prepaid setup, auto-reload is enabled by default. If you do not want automatic purchases, review the setting and turn it off before confirming. The monthly auto-reload limit governs automatic credit purchases, not total API usage, and a prepaid balance reaching zero may not stop usage immediately. A positive balance is required for the documented complimentary-token offer, so do not assume that free traffic makes billing settings irrelevant. OpenAI’s prepaid billing guidance.

Understand Gemini’s paid-tier transition
Gemini’s free tier is bounded by model-specific limits. Linking billing moves an account to the paid tier; prepaid users also need a positive credit balance. Do not treat the separate Google Cloud welcome credit as a reliable way to cover Gemini API usage: for accounts opened after March 2, 2026, Google says it cannot be used for Gemini API or AI Studio charges. Keep API keys out of public and untrusted places
- Never paste a key into a public issue, shared document, or untrusted “free token” website.
- Use the provider’s own dashboard to check eligibility, usage, billing, and keys.
- For Gemini, Google recommends storing the key in an environment variable such as
GEMINI_API_KEYrather than embedding it directly in code. Google API keys are associated with Cloud projects, which control billing, collaborators, and permissions; Google documents keys restricted to the Gemini API by default and enforcement for leaked keys. These safeguards reduce exposure risk but do not guarantee account security. Google’s API key guidance. - If you think a key has been exposed, use the provider’s official key-management interface to revoke or replace it and review recent usage.
