If your flight is cancelled in Pakistan, ask the airline operating it for the remedy you want: a refund or alternative transport/rerouting. A public-information decision reproduces a Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) explanation that passengers should be told about alternative flights and receive a full ticket refund if they prefer one. PIA’s published Conditions of Carriage set out options for PIA bookings. These sources do not establish one current refund deadline or compensation amount for every airline.
What can you ask for after a cancellation?
The material available supports two basic choices: seek a refund if you no longer want to travel on the affected ticket, or ask for another flight or rerouting if you still need to reach your destination. Make your preference explicit rather than assuming the airline has automatically rebooked you or that its first offer is your only option.
| Remedy | When it may suit you | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Refund | You no longer want to travel using the affected ticket. | Ask which unused ticket amount will be refunded and the expected processing timeline. The CAA explanation reproduced in the Pakistan Information Commission decision refers to a full ticket refund; PIA’s conditions refer to an involuntary refund under its refund provisions. |
| Alternative transport or rerouting | You still need to reach your destination. | Confirm the route, departure and arrival times, operating airline, and whether any additional cost applies. The reproduced CAA explanation mentions available earlier or later flights of the airline. PIA’s terms also describe rerouting on PIA, another airline, or another mutually agreed means. |
The cited material describes a choice of remedy. Do not assume you can receive both a refund and rerouting for the same ticket unless the airline confirms that arrangement.
How to submit a refund or rerouting request
- Confirm the cancellation. Contact the operating airline and save its cancellation notice, text, email, or other written confirmation.
- Gather the booking details. Have the booking reference, e-ticket, passenger name, affected flight segment, and the airline’s current Conditions of Carriage ready.
- Choose one remedy and request it in writing. Tell the airline whether you want a refund or rerouting/alternative transport. Ask it to confirm the remedy, any conditions, and the expected processing timeline.
- Keep a record. Save your request, the airline’s replies, and receipts for reasonable expenses. The available sources do not establish that hotels, replacement tickets, or other incidental costs are reimbursable, so do not count on repayment unless an applicable rule or written airline commitment says so.
- Follow up with the right party. Contact the airline operating the cancelled flight. If a travel agent or other seller issued your ticket, ask both the airline and issuer who will process the claim; the available sources do not settle every agency-ticket arrangement.
Check which airline’s terms apply
For PIA bookings
Pakistan International Airlines’ Conditions of Carriage, Article 9.2.2, say that when PIA cancels a flight or fails to operate as scheduled, the passenger may choose carriage on another PIA flight with space, rerouting within a reasonable period on PIA or another airline or another mutually agreed means, or an involuntary refund under the refund article. These are PIA-specific contractual terms, not a universal rule for every airline. PIA also summarizes cancellation relief on its Air Passenger Rights page.

For other airlines
Check the operating airline’s current Conditions of Carriage and cancellation terms before relying on PIA’s options. The CAA explanation reproduced in the Pakistan Information Commission decision says that each airline has its own Conditions of Carriage. The decision is useful evidence of what CAA said, but it is not itself a verified current PCAA rule publication: Pakistan Information Commission decision, Syed Abu Ahmad Akif vs Civil Aviation Authority.
If the airline does not resolve the request
First make a written complaint to the operating airline, including your booking reference, cancellation confirmation, requested remedy, and the date of your earlier request. The reproduced CAA statement says that CAA facilitation counters at airports coordinate passenger grievances with airlines. Check the current official PCAA channel or ask at the airport about available facilitation before relying on an online form, email address, or phone number; the material cited here does not verify a current contact route.

Deadlines, compensation, and the limits of the available rules
The reproduced CAA explanation says a passenger who wants a refund receives a full ticket refund, but it does not give a processing deadline. PIA’s terms refer to its own involuntary-refund provisions. The material cited here does not establish a refund timeline or fixed compensation figure that applies across Pakistani airlines, so ask your carrier for its written timeline and check the terms that apply to your ticket.
Pakistan Code lists the Pakistan Civil Aviation Act, 2023. That listing alone does not establish a cancellation-specific provision or whether the 2015 CAA order on passenger rights remains in force, has been amended, or has been superseded. Avoid treating it as proof of any of those conclusions.
