Choose your next show by identifying one or two things you loved about the series you finished, then use those preferences to build a short list. Decide whether you want something familiar or a change of mood, check the premise and episode commitment, confirm it is available where you live, and sample one option before settling in.
Start with what you want to feel again
“I loved that series” is a useful starting point, but it is too broad to guide your next pick. Name the specific part that worked for you, then choose just one or two traits to carry forward. Trying to reproduce every feature can leave you with a shortlist that is too narrow—or make you overlook a show that suits you for a different reason.
- Characters and relationships: Did you care most about the friendships, family dynamics, rivalries, or character growth?
- Pace and tension: Did you want a slow build, frequent twists, a mystery to solve, or a relaxed watch?
- Setting or subject: Was the world, time period, workplace, or central subject part of the appeal?
- Humor and tone: Did you want warmth, sharp comedy, darkness, or a mix?
- Format and ending: Did short episodes suit your schedule? Did the conclusion leave you satisfied, or are you looking for a different kind of payoff?
Write your answer as a simple filter, such as “strong friendships and a hopeful tone” or “a tense mystery with short episodes.” You are not looking for a copy of the show you finished; you are identifying what you want from the next one.
Choose familiarity or a change of mood
Decide whether you want your next series to stay close to the last one or give you a contrast. Familiarity might mean a similar genre, tone, setting, or creator. A contrast could be a lighter comedy after a tense drama, or a self-contained story after a long-running series.

Genre helps narrow the field, but it is only a first filter. IMDb says its “More Like This” suggestions can draw on genre, country of origin, actors, and other information—not just a genre label. Its feature is described as a source of titles you may be interested in, not a guarantee that you will like them. IMDb’s More Like This explanation also notes that suggestions can vary by device and that newer titles may take longer to appear as information accumulates.
If you use similarity lists, treat them as prompts. Check each candidate’s premise and tone against the traits you chose instead of assuming that a shared cast member, genre, or country makes it the right fit.

Build a shortlist from more than one source
Recommendation tools can help you find candidates, but different lists answer different questions. IMDb’s Top Picks use your ratings and Watchlist activity and compare those signals with ratings from people IMDb identifies as having similar tastes. IMDb says it shows which titles informed each recommendation. Its What to Watch page also includes curated guide content, Fan Favorites, Watchlist items, and Most Popular titles; popularity or editorial selection is not the same as a personalized match.

These are descriptions of IMDb’s own feature, not evidence that a recommendation will capture why a particular show mattered to you. The IMDb What to Watch FAQ, updated 2 September 2025, explains how the service describes its recommendations.

Use more than one route to make a manageable list: a similarity feature, a personalized recommendation, a trusted person’s suggestion, or a guide category that matches your mood. Keep only a few titles that genuinely interest you. A long queue shifts the problem from “what should I watch?” to “which of these dozens should I start?”
Compare the candidates on the details that affect your viewing
Before you start, compare the actual shows rather than their rankings. For each one, check the premise, tone, the particular element it shares with your previous favorite, episode length, whether the series is complete, and whether it is available through a service you use in your country.

| Decision point | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Mood and tone | Do you want something lighter, darker, more suspenseful, or close to the mood of the show you finished? |
| Shared appeal | Does it offer the one or two features you chose—such as strong relationships, a distinctive setting, or a mystery? |
| Time commitment | Are the episodes and overall series commitment a good fit for your schedule? |
| Completion status | Do you want a completed story, or are you comfortable waiting for future episodes? |
| Local availability | Can you watch it in your country through a service you already have? |
These checks are especially useful when two options both sound appealing. Choose the one that better fits what you want right now—perhaps shorter episodes, a completed story, or a lighter tone—rather than trying to identify an objectively best show.

If you are deciding whether to begin an ongoing series, check its current status and whether you are comfortable waiting for future episodes. JustWatch’s TV Show Tracking support page describes ways to track seasons or episodes and distinguish shows you have not started, are watching, are caught up on, or have completely seen. Treat those tracking features as a way to organize your viewing, not a substitute for checking current information about a show.
Sample one show, then reassess
When one candidate stands out, watch a trailer or the opening episode. Notice whether the pacing, tone, and characters match the reasons you chose it. If it does not work for you, move to another title on your shortlist. A recommendation or popularity rank can help you find something to try; it cannot promise that the show will suit your mood.

- Find a few candidates using recommendations, similarity lists, or other sources.
