To choose wireless earbuds, start with fit: earbuds that hurt or keep slipping are unlikely to suit your routine, whatever their sound or battery specifications say. Then check whether their sound profile and device compatibility fit your preferences, and compare battery figures using the same conditions—especially whether the number covers the earbuds alone or includes the charging case.

Start with how and where you will use them

Features matter when they solve a problem in your routine. Before comparing models, identify the situations in which you will wear the earbuds most often.

Routine Prioritize Check
Commuting or travel Comfortable fit, active noise cancellation (ANC), and enough buds-only runtime for the journey Whether an ambient mode lets you hear announcements or nearby people when needed
Long listening or desk use Comfort over an extended wearing period Tip options and pressure points; if in-ear designs do not suit you, compare over-ear headphones
Work calls Call and microphone performance, plus comfort Multipoint support if you want to switch between a computer and phone; confirm support on the exact model
Exercise or outdoor use A secure fit and an appropriate stated water-resistance rating The product specification for sweat or splash resistance; do not infer that a model is waterproof
Gaming or video Low-latency support when sync matters Compatibility with your specific device and connection
Situational awareness An ambient-sound mode or open-style design Whether it lets you hear your surroundings in the situations you care about

Sony’s UK buying guide also recommends matching noise control and other features to how you use headphones, rather than treating every feature as essential.

Judge comfort by fit, not a spec sheet

Ear shape and comfort vary from person to person. Check the earbud shape and weight, the range of supplied tip sizes, and whether the buds stay secure without creating pressure. Sony notes that comfort can be as important as sound quality for people who wear earbuds for several hours, and advises checking ear-tip options. A model that fits one listener well may not suit another.

JBL Vibe Beam - True Wireless Earbuds - Black
  • JBL Deep Bass Sound: Get the most from your mixes with high-quality audio from secure, reliable earbuds with 8mm drivers featuring JBL Deep Bass Sound
  • Comfortable fit: The ergonomic, stick-closed design of the JBL Vibe Beam fits so comfortably you may forget you're wearing them. The closed design excludes external sounds, enhancing the bass performance
  • Up to 32 (8h + 24h) hours of battery life and speed charging: With 8 hours of battery life in the earbuds and 24 in the case, the JBL Vibe Beam provide all-day audio. When you need more power, you can speed charge an extra two hours in just 10 minutes.
  • Hands-free calls with VoiceAware: When you're making hands-free stereo calls on the go, VoiceAware lets you balance how much of your own voice you hear while talking with others
  • Water and dust resistant: From the beach to the bike trail, the IP54-certified earbuds and IPX2 charging case are water and dust resistant for all-day experiences
  • If you can try earbuds in person, handle them normally and follow appropriate hygiene procedures.
  • If buying online, check the retailer’s return terms before ordering so you know what options you have if the fit is uncomfortable. Policies vary by retailer; there is no universal return period.
  • For sessions lasting hours, assess comfort over a meaningful wearing period if possible. Sony suggests considering over-ear headphones if long-wear comfort is a priority and in-ear designs do not work for you.

Choose sound for your ears and devices

Sound depends on the earbud’s acoustic design and tuning, how it fits, the quality of the recording or stream, the playback device, and your own preferences. Decide what you like—such as stronger bass or clearer vocals—and check whether the companion app offers sound adjustments that help you get there.

Check codec compatibility, but do not chase badges

A Bluetooth codec badge is not a guarantee that earbuds will sound better to every listener. The playback device and earbuds must support a compatible codec, and source material matters too. Qualcomm describes aptX as Bluetooth audio compression and promotes aptX-enabled headphones; the company also notes that source-file quality affects listening. Sony describes LDAC as a Bluetooth technology capable of transmitting more audio data than standard Bluetooth codecs on supported products. Treat those as vendor descriptions, then check that your phone or computer supports the codec on the exact model.

Compare under the same listening conditions

Noise-control settings can change what you hear, so compare models in similar modes rather than treating every listening impression as directly comparable. TechRadar’s 2026 roundup reports a change in its reviewer’s experience of the Technics EAH-AZ100 with ANC on versus off; that is an editorial observation about one model, not a controlled finding that predicts how every earbud will sound.

Compare battery life on equal terms

Look for two separate numbers: continuous playback time from the earbuds on one charge, and total playback time when the charging case is included. They answer different questions. A large case-inclusive total does not tell you how long the buds will last during one uninterrupted journey or work session.

  • Note whether the buds-only figure is stated with ANC on or off.
  • Record any stated volume or other test conditions.
  • Compare figures from similar conditions; product type, volume, and features such as noise cancelling can affect runtime, according to Sony’s guidance.
  • Keep manufacturer “up to” specifications separate from reviewer results. They are not interchangeable measurements.

As a model-specific example, TechRadar’s 2026 roundup lists the Technics EAH-AZ100 at up to 12 hours from the earbuds and up to 29 hours with the charging case. Elsewhere in the same roundup, its reviewer describes 10 hours with ANC. These are figures reported by that publication, with different conditions; do not combine them into one runtime or treat them as a standardized cross-brand test.

Check the details that can rule a model in or out

Noise control and ambient sound

ANC may help reduce background noise in places such as transport or busy public spaces. Ambient modes are useful when you need to hear announcements or people without removing your earbuds. Consider both only if those situations apply to you.

Calls and multipoint

For frequent calls, look for model-specific information about microphone and call performance. Multipoint can be useful when you need to connect to both a computer and phone, but confirm that the exact model supports it and check how switching works for your devices.

Water resistance

Use the rating stated in the exact product’s specifications, particularly for workouts or outdoor use. Sony UK’s official support documentation says: “Water resistance does not mean waterproof unless this is specifically stated in the product specifications.” Do not assume that a water-resistance rating covers every kind of exposure.

Use a comparison checklist before buying

Compare only the criteria that matter for your routine. A checklist helps expose gaps in product information without turning one impressive specification into an overall winner.

  • Fit: shape, weight, supplied tip options, and whether the design seems secure and comfortable for your ears.
  • Sound: preferred tuning, available app adjustments, supported codec, and compatibility with your playback device.
  • Noise control: ANC or ambient modes, if relevant to your environments.
  • Battery: buds-only runtime and case-inclusive total, with ANC and other stated conditions attached to each figure.
  • Calls and switching: call performance and multipoint support if you need them.
  • Durability: the exact water-resistance rating in the product specification, if you will exercise or use the earbuds outdoors.
  • Price and availability: verify these for your region and the exact model at the time you buy; they can change.

For an example rather than a universal recommendation, TechRadar’s 2026 roundup includes the Technics EAH-AZ100, praising its sound, comfort, and fit while noting ANC and ANC-off listening caveats. Those are the publication’s reviewer assessments, not independent laboratory findings. Its runtime figures are reported above with their respective conditions.
