To choose a primary monitor, open Settings > System > Display, select the screen you want, then check Make this my main display under Multiple displays. If you are unsure which screen Windows calls “1” or “2,” use Identify first.
Set the primary display in Windows

Open Settings > System > Display. This route applies to Windows 11 and Windows 10; some navigation details can vary by version. Microsoft’s multiple-monitor instructions cover selecting a display and its settings.

If needed, click Identify. Windows puts a number on each connected screen so you can match the number in Settings to the physical monitor.

In the numbered layout, select the monitor you want to use as the primary display. Do not assume monitor 1 must be primary; select the screen you actually want.

Scroll to Multiple displays and check Make this my main display. The precise label is corroborated by a Microsoft-hosted community answer; wording or placement may differ in some Windows builds, so use the current control shown in Settings if it does.
Primary display, arrangement, and projection mode are different settings
Making one monitor primary designates it as the main display; it does not determine whether Windows mirrors or extends the desktop. You can also arrange the numbered screens in Display settings to match their physical positions, which affects how the pointer moves between them.

To choose how the desktop appears across connected screens, press Windows key + P and select the mode you need:
- Extend: Use the displays as one larger desktop and move windows between them.
- Duplicate: Show the same desktop on multiple screens.
- PC screen only or Second screen only: Show the desktop on just one of the screens.

If the monitor you want is missing

Check that the monitor’s cable is firmly connected to the PC or dock and that the monitor is powered on.

Go to Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect.

If the display still does not appear, check the cable, dock, and other connected accessories. A primary-display setting cannot fix a screen that Windows does not detect.

Microsoft also recommends checking that Extend is selected with Windows key + P when a multi-screen setup stops working. If one external screen works but another will not, your graphics or display adapter may not support that many displays; check with its manufacturer. A splitter duplicates one signal rather than creating two independent extended displays. See Microsoft’s display and dock troubleshooting guidance.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 notes
The Display settings guidance covers both Windows 10 and Windows 11, though labels or their placement can vary by build. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes under the ended support arrangement; its Windows 10 setup instructions may still be useful for changing this setting.
