For simple dictation into a Windows text box, start with Windows Voice Typing. If you also want to navigate and control Windows by speaking, use Voice Access on Windows 11. If you mainly write in Google Docs or dictate Slides speaker notes, try Google’s browser-based voice typing. Before buying anything, test the microphone already connected to your PC.
Choose by what you want to do

These built-in options address different needs. Voice Typing is a way to dictate into a field; Voice Access adds spoken commands for navigating and controlling the PC. Google’s tools are most convenient when the document itself is in Docs or Slides.
Set up Windows Voice Typing for a text box
- Connect or enable a microphone, and confirm Windows can use it. Voice Typing also requires an internet connection.
- Place the cursor in the text field where you want the words to appear.
- Press Windows+H. If you use a touch keyboard, select its microphone key instead.
- Wait for the listening indicator, then speak. If you need to change the language, use the taskbar input switcher or press Windows+Space.
Voice Typing is the simpler choice when you only need to enter text. It does not provide the broader Windows and app control available in Voice Access. Check that your specific language and locale are supported in Microsoft’s Voice Typing guidance.
Set up Voice Access for dictation and hands-free commands
- Check that the PC runs Windows 11 version 22H2 or later.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Speech and start Voice Access, or search Windows for Voice Access.
- During first-time setup, connect to the internet and download the language files you need.
- Select the microphone you want Voice Access to use, and confirm that Windows microphone privacy permissions allow access.
- After setup, use spoken commands to work with Windows and apps as well as dictate text. Microsoft describes recognition as on-device after the language download, so Voice Access can be used offline.
Microsoft’s setup page lists English (US, UK, India, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia), Spanish (Spain and Mexico), German (Germany), French (France and Canada), Simplified Chinese (China), Traditional Chinese (Taiwan), Japanese, and Italian. Its FAQ summarizes command-language availability more narrowly as English, German, Spanish, and French. Because these pages describe language support differently, check the live Voice Access setup language list for the language and locale you intend to use rather than assuming every listed language has identical command coverage.

Use voice typing in Google Docs or Slides
Google documents voice typing for current Chrome, Edge, and Safari. The computer must have a working microphone, and the browser controls the speech-to-text service and determines how speech is processed before text reaches Docs or Slides.
- Turn on the computer microphone and allow the browser to access it.
- In a Google Doc, select Tools > Voice typing, then select the microphone control.
- For Slides speaker notes, select Tools > Dictate speaker notes.
For other document workflows, this browser-specific approach may be less convenient than Windows Voice Typing. See Google’s voice typing instructions for Docs and Slides.

Test your current microphone before buying one
A working microphone is required, but an external microphone is not. First check that the intended input is selected, the relevant app or browser has microphone permission, and the microphone is close enough to capture your speech clearly. Voice Access setup lets you select the microphone to use.

- If the existing input is inconvenient or inadequate, a basic PC headset or USB microphone is an optional alternative. The available documentation does not establish that a particular microphone type or model is best.
What the documentation does—and does not—establish
Microsoft’s feature guidance covers setup, connectivity, language availability, and how Voice Typing and Voice Access work; Google documents its browser and Docs/Slides workflow. These sources do not provide a comparable accuracy or speed benchmark, so they cannot establish which option recognizes speech best or types fastest. Dragon appears in Microsoft’s Voice Access FAQ, but the available information here does not establish current editions, compatibility, pricing, or partner-program details. Verify those specifics before choosing dedicated speech-recognition software.
