For a mostly static devotional-music stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264, CBR, and about 8–10 Mbps—provided your upload connection can sustain it with headroom. That bitrate is a practical starting inference, not a YouTube rule for devotional music: YouTube’s live-ingestion table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30 H.264. If your connection is less reliable or has limited upload capacity, try 720p30 at about 4–6 Mbps instead, then test and monitor the stream.
Choose a bitrate that fits your resolution, frame rate, and connection
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second. For a 24/7 stream, the best setting is one your connection can sustain continuously—not simply the highest number your encoder allows. YouTube’s published figures below are for live-stream ingestion, not uploaded-video encoding. They vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube Help’s H.264 live-ingestion figures, checked in 2026. YouTube also publishes ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; check its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions if you use either codec.
Is 5000 kbps enough?
5,000 kbps is 5 Mbps. For 1080p30 H.264, that matches YouTube’s listed minimum, not its 14 Mbps recommendation. It may be a workable constraint-dependent setting, but it leaves less margin for a stable 1080p picture than YouTube recommends. If your upload connection cannot comfortably sustain a higher bitrate, lower the resolution—720p30 is listed at 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended—or reduce the bitrate and test the result. Do not treat the minimum as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.

Set the encoder for a continuous music stream
For a mostly still devotional image or album-art screen, 30 fps is generally a sensible starting frame rate. Use 60 fps only if the visual layer includes motion that benefits from it; at 1080p, YouTube’s H.264 recommendation rises from 14 Mbps at 30 fps to 17 Mbps at 60 fps.
- Video codec: H.264 is a broadly compatible starting choice. YouTube also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), as specified in YouTube’s live-encoder guidance.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: For stereo, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and an audio bitrate of 128 kbps.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS where available; YouTube recommends it.
These settings govern the incoming live feed. YouTube transcodes live video into output formats for different devices and network conditions; that does not remove the need to send a stable stream to YouTube in the first place.

Check upload headroom before committing to a bitrate
YouTube says the total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Use upload capacity—not download speed—to choose a setting. A speed test is only a snapshot, so check that the connection remains stable under conditions similar to your intended stream. If sending a primary and backup stream, account for both streams plus the recommended margin. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide and its live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
- Estimate your total outgoing bitrate. Include video and audio, and include both feeds if you use a primary and backup stream.
- Leave capacity unused. Keep the combined stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth with YouTube’s recommended 20% margin rather than operating at the connection’s limit.
- Choose the lower-demand option if capacity is uncertain. Try 720p30 before pushing an unstable connection toward 1080p30.
- Test before the real broadcast. Send audio and movement similar to what the live stream will contain, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages.
Test and troubleshoot the stream
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages during operation. For a 24/7 broadcast, assess the feed after it has run long enough to reveal recurring connection problems, not only during a brief initial check.

- Stream health reports dropped frames or instability: The outgoing bitrate may be too close to available upload capacity, or the connection may be fluctuating. Lower the bitrate or resolution, then test again.
- The image looks soft or blocky: If the connection has reliable headroom, increase bitrate within the recommendation for your resolution and frame rate. Otherwise, verify that the source video itself has sufficient detail; increasing the outgoing bitrate cannot restore detail that is not in the source.
- 1080p60 will not stay stable: It has a higher recommended H.264 ingestion rate than 1080p30. If the visuals do not need 60 fps, switch to 30 fps; otherwise, confirm upload capacity before trying again.
- Audio or video settings do not match the intended stream: Check codec, CBR, keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate in the encoder, then run another test and watch YouTube’s health messages.
