Choose sealant only after confirming that both your exact tire and wheel are approved for tubeless use, then follow the tire maker’s instructions for sealant type and amount. There is no universal dose or sealant that is guaranteed to close every puncture at road pressure. When the tire maker does not specify a product, compare road-use guidance, application and valve compatibility, maintenance instructions, and the evidence behind any puncture-size claims.
Start with tire and rim compatibility
Check the documentation for the exact tire and wheel or rim model before adding sealant. Schwalbe advises using only wheels approved by their manufacturer for tubeless use. Also check both components’ pressure limits: the lower applicable maximum is the limit for the setup, and you should not exceed it. A sealant choice cannot make an unapproved combination safe. Follow the tire maker’s sealant instructions first
Schwalbe Pro One and Pro One TT Tubeless Easy
For initial assembly of these named tires, Schwalbe specifies Doc Blue, at least 30 ml and preferably 60 ml per tire, followed by at least 25 km of riding to distribute the sealant. Schwalbe warns: “If the instructions for initial fitting are not followed, the sealing of the tire cannot be guaranteed!” These directions apply to the named tires and initial fitting; do not assume they govern other models. When no tire-specific product is named
Use the tire maker’s applicable instructions and the sealant maker’s directions together. Manufacturer dosage recommendations differ, so treat them as model- and product-specific guidance, not a universal formula. Porous casings may require more sealant, but do not exceed or substitute instructions based on guesswork.

Compare the practical differences
| Option | What the manufacturer says | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Stan’s sealant | Stan’s recommends 2 ounces (60 ml) for road and cyclocross tires. Its support page says the sealant can be used in tubeless applications including UST. | Stan’s directs users to follow tire and rim maker guidelines. This is its recommendation, not a dose that applies to every tire. Stan’s sealant support |
| Schwalbe guidance | Schwalbe gives a broader width-based recommendation of 60–90 ml for tires 23–60 mm wide. | For Pro One and Pro One TT Tubeless Easy initial fitting, use the separate Doc Blue instructions above rather than treating this range as a replacement. Schwalbe tubeless FAQ |
| SILCA Ultimate Tubeless Sealant, current injectable formula | SILCA describes a natural and synthetic latex blend, says it is injectable through most valves—especially those with removable cores—and claims it has been tested to seal punctures up to 6 mm. The page states a 6+ month life and recommends reinstalling every six months. | The 6 mm figure and lifespan are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative findings or guarantees. SILCA says results depend on tire thread count, puncture shape, and cause. It warns against mixing this formula with its previous version and says it is incompatible with Reserve Fillmore valves. Check how you will install and maintain it
- Application route: Confirm whether the formula can be injected through your valve or must be poured through the tire bead. Injection usually requires a removable valve core; fiber content and valve design can prevent it.
- Valve compatibility: Do not assume a removable-core injector works with every valve. SILCA specifically says its current Ultimate formula is not compatible with Reserve Fillmore valves.
- Maintenance interval: Follow the directions for the exact formula and generation you have. SILCA’s current injectable product page gives a six-month interval, while its separate installation page describes an older FiberFoam routine with replenishment every three months and full cleanout after a year. Those instructions are for different product directions and should not be combined. Check the bottle and current instructions. SILCA Tubeless System Instructions
- Evidence behind performance claims: Ask what tire, pressure, puncture shape, and conditions underpin a claim, and whether it is a manufacturer statement or an independent test. The product claims above are not neutral comparative statistics.
Set realistic expectations at road pressure
Sealant can close some punctures, but it is not a promise that every hole will seal at your riding pressure. A cut or burst may exceed what sealant can repair; Stan’s guide also discusses tubeless limits. Stan’s tubeless guide SILCA likewise notes that performance varies with casing thread count, puncture shape, and cause. If a tire will not hold air after a puncture, treat it as a repair problem rather than assuming a larger sealant dose will solve it.

A simple selection sequence
- Identify the exact tire and wheel models, confirm both are approved for tubeless use, and check their pressure limits.
- Find the tire maker’s sealant and installation requirement for that model; use it when specified.
- If no tire-specific instruction controls, compare sealants by stated road use, recommended volume, installation method, valve compatibility, and maintenance schedule.
- Read puncture claims as claims with conditions, not guarantees; choose a setup you can install and maintain correctly.
