To choose travel insurance for delays and cancellations, compare the policy’s covered reasons, delay trigger, eligible expenses, reimbursement limits, exclusions, and claim requirements against your itinerary and prepaid costs. A plan does not automatically pay for every delay or cancellation: each policy sets its own limits and lists specific situations it will or won’t cover.

Know which travel-insurance benefit you need

Cancellation, interruption, and delay are separate benefits. Read each section of the policy rather than relying on a general label such as “trip protection.”

  • Trip cancellation may reimburse eligible prepaid trip costs when a covered reason prevents you from starting the trip.
  • Trip interruption may cover certain losses or additional transportation costs if a covered event forces you to cut a trip short after it begins.
  • Travel delay may reimburse eligible expenses or other specified losses after a covered delay reaches the plan’s trigger.

The precise definitions, conditions, and limits vary by policy. The NAIC explains cancellation coverage for prepaid trip costs; Allianz describes delay benefits on its own plans, which should be treated as an insurer-specific illustration, not an industry standard.

Compare the delay trigger and what it pays for

There is no universal number of hours a flight must be late before insurance pays. A delay claim depends on the policy’s trigger and conditions, not just the airline’s posted arrival time. Check these terms in the plan documents:

  • Qualifying delay: How many hours must pass? Must they be consecutive? Which causes qualify?
  • Connections and departures: Does the wording address missed connections or a missed cruise or tour departure?
  • Eligible expenses: Are lodging, meals, local transport, onward travel, or unused prepaid costs covered? Each category may be treated differently.
  • Limits: What is the per-person or per-trip maximum, and is there a daily sublimit?
  • Proof: Are itemized receipts required? Must the carrier confirm the length and cause of the delay? Does the plan offer any fixed payment without receipts?

For example, one Allianz plan’s terms list a six-hour delay and plan-specific dollar caps. That is an example from one plan, not a general waiting period or benefit amount. Compare the current certificate and terms for the specific plan you are considering.

Check cancellation and interruption reasons before buying

Look for the policy’s actual list of covered reasons and exclusions. A cancellation or interruption benefit applies only when the circumstances meet the contract’s terms; a change of plans or any unexpected event is not necessarily covered. Review provisions for known events, pre-existing conditions, supplier insolvency or default, and work obligations, where relevant to your trip.

Also check the maximum trip cost the plan will insure, how it calculates reimbursement, whether supplier refunds reduce the covered loss, and whether interruption coverage includes transportation home. Some policies impose conditions such as losing a substantial part of the trip; the wording controls.

When to consider Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) may suit travelers who want broader cancellation flexibility than the standard covered-reason list provides. The NAIC says CFAR is usually an add-on, commonly has a purchase window, costs more, typically reimburses only a portion of the trip cost, and sets cancellation timing and trip-cost-insurance requirements. Availability and exact conditions vary, so verify the deadline and wording before relying on it.

Compare policies against your trip

Use the same itinerary and traveler details when comparing quotes. Evaluate the policy documents alongside the price rather than choosing by premium or by a “comprehensive” label.

What to compare Questions to answer in the policy
Delay benefit What hours, causes, and connection scenarios qualify? Which expenses are eligible? What are the daily and total limits, and what documentation is required?
Cancellation and interruption Which reasons qualify? What exclusions apply? What trip-cost limit and reimbursement basis apply? Are refunds deducted, and is transport home covered for interruption?
Waivers and add-ons Does the plan offer a pre-existing-condition waiver or CFAR? What purchase deadline and eligibility conditions apply?
Trip eligibility Are your residence, destinations, dates, trip length, traveler ages, and planned activities eligible?
Other coverage and service What benefits do your credit card or other policies already provide? How do those payments coordinate with a claim? Is assistance available when you need to arrange care or transport?
Price and claims What is the actual premium for your trip? What records must you submit, and how do you contact assistance or file a claim?

The NAIC’s 2026 overview says travel insurance usually costs 5% to 10% of total trip price, while noting that actual cost varies with factors including season, origin, destination, age, and coverage. Treat that as a broad U.S. overview, not a quote or a prediction of what your policy will cost.

Check separate airline and passenger-rights options

Insurance is only one possible recovery route. Depending on the itinerary, carrier, and applicable law, you may also have a right to a refund, rerouting, assistance, or compensation from the airline. Those rights are separate from an insurance claim, and a carrier payment or refund may affect the loss eligible for reimbursement under a policy.

For flights governed by applicable EU passenger-rights rules, consult the European Commission’s passenger-rights overview and its questions and answers on revised EU air passenger rights. The rules depend on the route and the law that applies; do not assume they apply to every flight. Keep carrier notices and ask the insurer how refunds, assistance, or other payments affect a claim.

Confirm the policy fits the travelers and activities

Before paying, verify that every traveler, destination, and trip date is covered, and that the plan accommodates the activities you intend to do. Consider medical needs, emergency transport, and how to reach assistance, not just delay and cancellation benefits. The U.S. Department of State recommends checking destination validity, trip length, medical care, transportation, activities, and access to a 24-hour help line. This is U.S. government guidance for travelers abroad; policy eligibility and local requirements still need to be checked for your own trip.

Ask these questions before you buy

  1. Which exact cancellation and interruption reasons qualify, and which likely causes are excluded?
  2. How long must a delay last, must the hours be consecutive, and what causes qualify?
  3. Which costs can I claim, and what are the daily and total limits?
  4. What carrier confirmation, receipts, and other proof will I need?
  5. How are airline, tour-operator, credit-card, or other-insurer refunds and payments coordinated with a claim?
  6. Are all travelers, destinations, dates, and planned activities eligible? Do any conditions or waivers have purchase deadlines?
  7. Is a 24-hour assistance line available, and should I contact it before arranging alternate lodging or transport?
  8. What is the premium for this itinerary, and what cancellation or refund window applies to the policy itself?

Use the policy wording and certificate as the final authority. Save those documents along with booking confirmations, carrier delay or cancellation notices, and receipts. If a disruption happens, follow the plan’s claim and assistance instructions and retain records of what the carrier offers.
