Choose the least expensive Xbox Game Pass plan that includes the games, platform, and benefits you will actually use. In the current U.S. lineup, that means comparing Essential, Premium, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass against your preferred games, day-one access, cloud play, and any bundled memberships—not choosing by catalog size alone. Game availability changes by title, region, plan, and platform, so check the current Xbox Game Pass library before subscribing.

Which plan fits your gaming habits?
Choose Essential if console multiplayer is your main reason to subscribe
Essential is the entry-level cross-device tier in the U.S. plan lineup, with a smaller catalog and online console multiplayer. Choose it when its included games and online features meet your needs and you do not need day-one releases. Do not assume that every online game requires a paid plan: Xbox says free-to-play multiplayer is open to every Xbox player.

Choose Premium if you can wait for select Xbox-published games
Premium offers a larger listed catalog and more monthly cloud-play time than Essential. It is not the day-one tier: the U.S. overview says select new Xbox-published games join within one year. If immediate access to a particular release matters, check that game’s plan eligibility rather than relying on the general description.
Choose Ultimate if you will use its extra access and bundles
Ultimate is the fit for players who value select day-one games, the largest listed catalog, the highest cloud-play allowance among the three cross-device tiers, and its included memberships. Its extra services are only savings if you would otherwise use them. Day-one access does not cover every game; Xbox’s footnote excludes Call of Duty titles.

Choose PC Game Pass if you mainly play on PC
PC Game Pass is aimed at PC players and lists day-one games and EA Play alongside a PC catalog. It does not include cloud gaming. Before subscribing for a particular game, confirm that the title is included for PC and that its required launcher works with your setup.

How to compare plans before subscribing
- List the platforms you actually use. Essential, Premium, and Ultimate are described as working across console, PC, and supported devices; PC Game Pass is PC-focused. Cloud play requires a supported device and region. Check the official comparison for current support details.
- Check your exact games. Search the live Game Pass catalog for each title you intend to play, then confirm it is included with the plan and on the platform you use. Catalog totals are not guarantees of individual-game access.
- Decide whether day-one access matters. The U.S. summaries list day-one games for Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium says select new Xbox-published games join within a year, while Essential does not include new releases on day one. Select-title limits and exclusions apply.
- Estimate cloud use. The U.S. overview lists 5 monthly hours for Essential, 10 for Premium, and 15 for Ultimate. PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. Device and regional support apply, so confirm current terms if cloud play is central to your decision.
- Count only bundles you will use. Ultimate lists EA Play, Fortnite Crew, and Ubisoft+ Classics; PC Game Pass lists EA Play. Avoid paying more for memberships that would otherwise go unused.
- Compare the checkout and renewal details. Offers can be limited by region, time, or subscriber eligibility, and recurring subscriptions renew at the then-current regular price unless canceled. Check your signed-in Microsoft checkout for the price, offer eligibility, tax, billing interval, and renewal amount before starting.
What do the plans cost?
Prices vary and can change. The U.S. Microsoft Store listing reviewed showed PC Game Pass at $13.99 per month and Ultimate at $22.99 per month; Premium was shown at $14.99 per month after a displayed 14-day offer. These are listing values, not guaranteed future or account-specific rates. The reviewed official materials did not expose a standard U.S. Essential monthly price, so check the amount offered to you rather than relying on an estimate.

Upgrade only if Ultimate’s additional features solve a real need: a day-one title you want to play, more cloud time than your current tier allows, or included memberships you would use. If the games you want are already available on a cheaper plan and you do not need those extras, the lower tier is the better match. Confirm the specific titles, current price, and renewal terms before deciding.
