There is no universal “slider image size.” Choose dimensions from the slider’s rendered width and aspect ratio at each breakpoint, then export responsive width and pixel-density variants. Use srcset and sizes for normal resizing, <picture> when mobile needs a different crop, and reserve the frame with intrinsic dimensions or aspect-ratio. This approach keeps images sharp without downloading oversized files or making the layout jump.
Start with the rendered slider, not a preset pixel number
A source file that is “1920 × 600” is not automatically correct. The browser displays the image inside a slot whose width, height, aspect ratio, crop behavior and device pixel density vary by viewport. Measure that slot first.
Record the slot at important breakpoints
- Open the page in browser developer tools and inspect the slider frame, not just the image file.
- Record the frame width and height on desktop, tablet and mobile. Calculate each ratio as
width ÷ height. - Note whether the frame is full-bleed, constrained by a content column, or changed by a sidebar.
- Repeat with the browser zoom or device emulation set to the densities you support. A 1,200 CSS-pixel slot may need a 2,400-pixel candidate on a 2× display.
The largest source should cover the largest rendered slot multiplied by the required density. Smaller candidates should cover the narrower slots. Do not create one enormous file for every device: responsive selection exists so a phone does not download desktop pixels.
Use a sizing worksheet
| Breakpoint | Rendered slot (example) | Ratio | Candidate guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop | 1,200 × 500 CSS px | 2.4:1 | Provide roughly 1,200 px and 2,400 px width candidates for 1× and 2× displays. |
| Tablet | 800 × 420 CSS px | 1.9:1 | Use candidates around 800 px and 1,600 px if this ratio is retained. |
| Mobile | 390 × 520 CSS px | 0.75:1 | Use a portrait art-directed crop when the design intentionally changes shape. |
These numbers are an illustration of the method, not a recommended universal preset. Your measured slot is the authority.

Choose one ratio or art-direct mobile
Keep one aspect ratio when the composition is shared
If the same scene works at every width, keep a consistent ratio and let the image scale proportionally. This simplifies authoring and prevents unexpected cropping. The frame can still change width at breakpoints while preserving its ratio with CSS.
Use a different mobile crop when the design requires it
A wide desktop banner often cannot keep a person, product or headline visible inside a narrow portrait frame. That is an art-direction problem, not a request for a sharper version of the same file. Supply a separate mobile source with <picture>:
<picture>
<source media="(max-width: 600px)" srcset="hero-mobile-390.jpg 390w, hero-mobile-780.jpg 780w">
<img
src="hero-desktop-1200.jpg"
srcset="hero-desktop-800.jpg 800w, hero-desktop-1200.jpg 1200w, hero-desktop-2400.jpg 2400w"
sizes="(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 1200px"
width="1200" height="500"
alt="A cyclist riding beside the coast">
</picture>
The source changes the composition; the img remains the fallback and carries the intrinsic dimensions and alternative text. Use art direction only when the crop or subject placement is intentionally different.
Make responsive selection truthful
Build width candidates around real slots
For a fluid slot, export several widths rather than arbitrary “small, medium and large” files. A practical set might include the widths your CMS generates plus a high-density option for the largest slot. The browser chooses from those candidates according to the slot description and display density.

sizes must describe the image’s actual rendered width. If the slider occupies 80vw on tablets, write that rather than 100vw. A false value can make the browser select a file that is materially wider than needed.
Reserve space before the file arrives
Include truthful width and height attributes, or set the frame’s ratio in CSS. The browser can then allocate the correct area before downloading the image, reducing cumulative layout shift and preserving the reader’s position.
.slider-frame {
aspect-ratio: 12 / 5;
overflow: hidden;
}
.slider-frame img {
display: block;
width: 100%;
height: 100%;
object-fit: cover;
object-position: 50% 50%;
}
Use the ratio that your design actually reserves. Do not combine a guessed fixed height with a fluid width; that is a common cause of distorted or unexpectedly cropped slides.

Choose the crop policy deliberately
cover: edge-to-edge visual treatment
object-fit: cover fills the frame and trims overflow. It works for decorative photographs and backgrounds, but important content near an edge can disappear. Set a focal point when the subject must remain visible:
Recommended Free Tools
.slide--product img { object-position: 70% 35%; }
Store the focal point with the asset or expose it as a CMS control so every breakpoint uses the intended subject position.
contain: preserve the entire image
object-fit: contain keeps the complete image visible. It may leave empty bands when the image and frame ratios differ, so it is better for diagrams, screenshots, logos and product shots where cropping would remove necessary information. Choose the band color intentionally.
Do not let fixed heights become accidental behavior
A fixed height is appropriate when the design genuinely requires a stable banner, but it is difficult to control across screen sizes. Prefer an aspect ratio or breakpoint-specific frame heights unless the product specification explicitly calls for a fixed-height slot.
Optimize bytes without sacrificing quality
- Export each candidate at the measured width; do not upscale a small source and call it a high-density version.
- Use a modern format your delivery stack supports, with a fallback when necessary. Keep compression consistent enough that text and fine detail remain legible.
- Do not lazy-load the first visible slide if it is the page’s primary content; defer slides that begin outside the viewport.
- Preload only the image needed for the initial view. Preloading every slide competes with page-critical resources.
- Check the selected candidate in developer tools. Confirm that its intrinsic width is not far above the rendered slot.
Responsive markup improves loading efficiency because a phone can receive a smaller candidate while a large display receives enough pixels for its slot. It does not remove the need to measure the layout.

Write alternative text for the slide’s purpose
Informative images need meaningful alt text. If a slide is purely decorative and the same information appears as adjacent text, use an empty alt. Do not put promotional copy only inside an image.
Check WordPress and other CMS output
WordPress can generate multiple image sizes and responsive markup, but the theme’s sizes value still has to match the real slider layout. A theme that claims every image is full viewport width can cause oversized downloads when the frame is actually constrained by a content column.

Handle dynamic slides and captions
If captions change the frame height, reserve the maximum intended ratio or keep captions outside the image box. Avoid changing the frame’s dimensions after the image loads; that produces a visible jump and can move a user’s focus or pointer target.
A repeatable implementation workflow
- Measure: document width, height and ratio for every meaningful breakpoint.
- Decide visibility: choose
coverwith a focal point for safe decorative cropping, orcontainwhen every pixel matters. - Set the largest source: multiply the widest rendered slot by the highest supported density.
- Generate candidates: add smaller widths for narrower slots and lower-density screens.
- Write markup: use
srcset, an accuratesizesexpression, intrinsic dimensions and usefulalttext. - Art-direct if needed: use
<picture>only for an intentional mobile crop or replacement. - Verify: inspect the selected resource at each breakpoint, test slow loading, and watch for layout shift, missing focal subjects and unreadable text.
Troubleshooting common slider problems
The image is blurry on high-density screens
The largest candidate may be no wider than the CSS slot, or the source itself may be low quality. Add a candidate approximately twice the rendered width and verify that srcset contains its correct w descriptor.
Mobile downloads the desktop file
Check the mobile slot and the sizes expression. If mobile needs a different composition, add a media-specific source in <picture>; srcset alone does not change the crop.
The subject is cut off
You are probably using cover without a focal point. Adjust object-position, revise the crop, or switch to contain when the full image is required.
The page jumps when the slide appears
Provide matching width/height attributes or an aspect-ratio on the frame. Also check that captions, controls and fonts do not add height after load.
Every viewport receives an oversized file
Inspect the browser’s selected resource and compare its intrinsic width with the slot. Correct an overly broad sizes value and create intermediate candidates instead of relying on one large original.

Text inside the artwork is unreadable
Text baked into a crop is vulnerable at every breakpoint. Move essential words into HTML, or create deliberate crops with safe areas and test them at the smallest supported frame.

What is the best file format for a slider?
Use a format your delivery pipeline supports that preserves the image’s required detail at an appropriate byte size. The dimension and responsive-selection decisions matter more than choosing a single format in isolation.
Should every slide have identical dimensions?
Slides sharing one frame should normally share its ratio. If a slide needs a materially different composition, create an intentional art-directed source rather than forcing unrelated artwork into one crop.
Can CSS alone make an image responsive?
CSS can resize the rendered image, but it cannot prevent the browser from downloading an unnecessarily large source. Pair the layout rules with width candidates in srcset and a truthful sizes value.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
