Choose a universal laptop charger by matching it to your exact laptop model—not by guessing from its size or class. Check the laptop’s required voltage, minimum wattage or current, charging port and standard, connector, and any identification feature. For USB-C, confirm the specific port accepts power and that the charger provides the needed USB Power Delivery (PD) output on that port.
What wattage charger does your laptop need?
There is no single wattage that works for every laptop. Find your exact model’s charging requirements in its manufacturer’s specifications or manual, then compare them with the output label on the original adapter if you have it. A broad description such as “ultrabook” or “gaming laptop” is not enough to determine the right charger.
An adapter label may list volts (V) and amps (A) rather than state wattage prominently. Watts equal volts multiplied by amps, so a 20 V, 3.25 A output is 65 W. Use the laptop maker’s documented requirement as the deciding reference if the label and a retailer listing appear to disagree.
How to check compatibility before buying
- Identify the exact laptop model. Use the model number on the laptop or in its system information, then consult the manufacturer’s current specifications or manual.
- Record the original adapter’s output, if available. Note its voltage, current, and wattage. These values help you identify the intended supply, but do not replace checking the laptop’s documentation.
- Confirm the charging path. For USB-C, verify that the particular port supports charging and check the laptop’s supported PD input. A USB-C-shaped port does not necessarily accept power. For a barrel or proprietary connector, check the required voltage, connector dimensions, polarity if specified, and any smart-pin or identification requirement.
- Choose an adapter that meets the documented output. A USB-C PD charger must support a voltage/current combination the laptop can negotiate and supply enough power on the port you will use. For a barrel connector, follow the model’s specified electrical and connector requirements; do not assume USB-C wattage guidance applies.
- Check the cable and actual port output. Make sure the cable is rated for the intended power. With multi-port chargers, check the output table for simultaneous use: the wattage printed on the charger may be shared among ports.
- Consider how you use the laptop. Heavy workloads can demand more power than a low-output backup source supplies. Some laptops may charge slowly, stop charging, or reduce performance when the available input is insufficient.
- Choose a safety-approved charger for your region. If the connector or electrical requirements remain uncertain, use the manufacturer’s adapter lookup or an authorized replacement rather than relying on a “universal” label.
Can you use a higher-wattage charger?
Sometimes. Lenovo says a higher-wattage charger can work when its voltage matches the laptop’s requirement and the connector fits; the laptop draws the power it needs for typical operation. That guidance applies only when the charging interface and electrical requirements match. A higher wattage by itself does not make an incompatible charger safe or ensure faster charging.

With USB-C PD, the laptop and power source negotiate a supported voltage and current. MSI’s USB-C PD FAQ, last updated August 18, 2026, describes that negotiation and cautions that a charger’s labeled maximum may not be available in practice if ports share output, thermal protection reduces output, or the cable is not rated appropriately.
Is a lower-wattage charger enough?
It depends on the laptop and what it is doing. An underpowered charger may charge slowly, fail to charge, or fail to keep the system powered during use. MSI documents insufficient-output cases that can involve a failed handshake or repeated connect-and-disconnect behavior.

The limitation can be specific to the model and use state. Lenovo’s Legion 5 15APH9 guide notes that USB-C charging may work while the computer is asleep or off but be insufficient during operation, causing reduced performance or slow or stopped charging. For demanding workloads, use the supplied adapter or the rating the manufacturer recommends.

Requirements can vary among models in the same family. Microsoft’s current Surface Laptop charging table gives these examples; they apply to the listed Surface models, not to laptops generally.

Which type of universal charger suits your laptop?
- USB-C PD charger: Use it only if the laptop supports charging through the selected USB-C port. Check the supported input, available per-port output, and cable rating.
- Universal barrel-tip adapter: Interchangeable tips do not prove compatibility. Match voltage, current or wattage, connector dimensions, polarity where specified, and any smart-pin requirement to the laptop documentation.
- Original or model-specific AC adapter: This is often the least ambiguous choice for laptops with proprietary connectors or high power requirements.
- USB-C power bank: This can be an option for a laptop that accepts USB-C charging, provided the bank’s port supplies the required output and the cable supports it.
- Multi-port charger: Check how output is allocated when other devices are connected; total advertised wattage may be divided among ports.
Does a higher USB-C PD maximum mean your laptop can use it?
No. HP’s UK guidance describes USB PD 3.1 as supporting up to 240 W, but that is the standard’s stated maximum—not a claim that a particular laptop accepts 240 W. The laptop’s supported input and the charger’s output on the port in use determine compatibility.

Compare them only after confirming that both meet the laptop’s requirements. Then check the available output on the port you will use, including with other devices connected, the cable’s rating and whether it is included, regional safety certification, portability, and whether the laptop can sustain full performance while charging. Price matters only among options that pass those compatibility checks.

Lenovo’s charger guidance recommends a safety-approved or certified third-party charger. Its examples include CCC for mainland China, CE in many European countries, and a mark from a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory, such as UL Listed, in the United States and Canada. These examples reflect the guide’s stated regions; follow local requirements and the laptop maker’s advice elsewhere.
