Choose a bedroom TV by measuring the distance from your eyes to the screen while you’re in your usual viewing position, then matching that distance to the kind of experience you want. As practical starting points, Samsung Canada’s bedroom guide suggests 42–43-inch TVs at about 1.3–1.4 m and 48–50-inch TVs at about 1.5 m. For a different reference, RTINGS’ mixed-use chart puts a 43-inch TV at 5 ft 10 in (1.78 m), a 50-inch at 6 ft 9 in (2.07 m), and a 55-inch at 7 ft 5 in (2.27 m). These are recommendations based on different approaches, not a single universal rule.
Start with your bed-to-screen distance
Measure from your eyes, in the bed position you use most, to the plane where the screen will sit. The TV’s diagonal measurement alone cannot tell you whether it will feel comfortably sized: the same screen can feel much more immersive when viewed from closer up.
Think about how you watch, too. A larger field of view can suit movies or games, while a less immersive view may be preferable for casual shows or news. RTINGS describes 30 degrees as a mixed-use baseline and 30–40 degrees as a useful field-of-view range. Its chart gives these mixed-use distance references:

These figures are RTINGS recommendations, updated June 3, 2026, rather than guarantees for every bedroom or viewing preference. Its size guidance treats the recommended screen as a comfortable minimum for a given distance; viewers who want a more immersive image may prefer a larger screen if it fits and remains comfortable. Use bedroom-specific recommendations as a second reference
Samsung Canada’s room guide gives closer bedroom examples: 42–43 inches at about 1.3–1.4 m, and 48–50 inches at about 1.5 m. Those suggestions differ from RTINGS’ mixed-use chart because the sources use different methods and viewing assumptions. Use them as separate reference points, not numbers to combine into one formula. Samsung also identifies room layout, furniture placement, viewing needs, and distance as factors in choosing a size. Samsung Canada’s room-by-room TV size guide provides its bedroom examples.
Account for resolution and screen clarity
A 4K television can preserve image clarity at shorter viewing distances than a lower-resolution set because its pixels are denser, according to Samsung’s distance guidance. That does not mean every viewer should sit close or choose a larger screen: comfort, field of view, and the room still matter. Sony’s support guidance uses a different kind of reference for 4K: a recommended distance of 1.5 times the screen height, presented as a minimum. Sony says to adjust for preference and layout. Treat that as Sony’s reference rather than a universal viewing-distance rule. Sony’s recommended TV viewing distance guidance explains the calculation.
Check the actual TV and placement before buying
Diagonal size is not the full footprint. Look up the exact model’s width and height, then confirm that its bezel, feet or mounting arrangement, and placement work with the wall or furniture. If it will sit on a cabinet, account for the stand’s footprint and cabinet width; if wall-mounted, check the intended mounting method and the screen’s sightline from bed.

- Measure usable wall or cabinet space, not just the nominal TV size.
- Consider whether the screen will be viewed straight on or at an angle from the bed.
- Check exact dimensions for the model you plan to buy. RTINGS’ chart dimensions are approximate and exclude bezel thickness, and Samsung notes that actual dimensions vary by model.
- Consider budget and everyday use alongside room size, as Samsung recommends.
RTINGS’ distance guide also recommends outlining candidate screen sizes on the wall with painter’s tape. Seeing the approximate screen area from bed can help you judge whether a size feels overpowering or too small before committing.

If two sizes both fit, compare them against the factors that change the experience:
- Distance: Which size gives you a comfortable field of view from your normal position?
- Viewing preference: Do you mainly want casual viewing, or a more immersive movie or gaming experience?
- Resolution: Is the set 4K, and does its resolution suit the distance at which you expect to watch?
- Physical fit: Does the exact model fit the wall, cabinet, stand, or mounting plan without obstructing the sightline?
- Use and budget: Is the larger screen worth it for the content you watch and the room you have?
Shortlist sizes using your measured distance, inspect the exact model dimensions, and tape an outline for the leading options. Pick the largest candidate that remains comfortable from bed and works with the room, placement, and budget.
