There is no turbo size that fits every four-cylinder engine: cylinder count alone does not determine airflow demand. Start with displacement, a realistic crank-horsepower goal and the engine’s useful RPM range, then compare candidate compressor maps and turbine-housing options. Finally, verify that the turbo works with the car’s intended use, fuel, controls and physical layout.
What information do you need before choosing a turbo?
Gather the details that describe the engine and how you intend to use it. Garrett Motion says its initial matching inputs are displacement and target crank horsepower; its guidance also identifies intended use, boost, engine speed, compressor efficiency, turbine housing and response as relevant factors.
- Engine displacement: the actual engine size, not simply the fact that it has four cylinders.
- Power goal: a realistic target at the crank, rather than an unexplained wheel-horsepower figure.
- RPM range and use: where the engine needs to make power, and whether the priority is street response, track flexibility or top-end performance.
- Setup details: fuel, engine modifications, manifold arrangement, vehicle and packaging constraints.
Without those details, an exact model recommendation would be guesswork. Boost pressure alone is not a sizing answer: the airflow and power associated with a boost target vary with displacement, RPM, volumetric efficiency, fuel and system losses.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do you use a compressor map?
A compressor map is more useful for matching than a standalone wheel diameter or a headline horsepower rating. It shows the compressor’s operating range and efficiency, allowing you to check whether the engine’s intended operating points fall in a suitable part of the map rather than merely below an advertised maximum.

Garrett’s Boost Adviser plots power points on compressor maps and returns candidate turbos as a baseline. Garrett says the maximum power figure for a turbo is calculated from compressor-map choke flow and represents potential flywheel power; it is not a guarantee of usable power on a particular engine. The tool’s results depend on accurate inputs and should be reviewed against the actual modifications and tune. The reviewed page says an account is required; access terms and functionality may change.
BorgWarner Match Bot is another manufacturer matching tool. It guides users through engine inputs, but a tool result cannot establish exact fitment without correct setup information and review of the complete installation.

How should response and top-end flow affect the choice?
Turbo selection involves a tradeoff between response in the RPM band you use and airflow at higher engine speeds. Garrett’s examples illustrate the direction of the compromise, not a universal rule for every car:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Rapid response: an autocross application prioritizing quick response may favor a smaller turbo or turbine housing, while giving up some maximum high-RPM power.
- High-RPM airflow: a drag application prioritizing top-end speed may call for a larger turbo and housing, with response characteristics suited to that use.
Street and track priorities can differ, and gearing, fuel and engine speed also matter. Choose around the engine’s useful operating band and actual use rather than assuming that either the smallest or largest option is automatically best.

Why does the turbine housing matter?
The turbine housing and its A/R are part of the turbo match, not independent shortcuts for selecting one. Their suitability depends on the turbine wheel and application as well as the engine, manifold and intended use. BorgWarner’s EFR technical guidance describes housing designs for particular turbine wheels and engine uses; that is a reason to assess housing and turbo together, not to apply one A/R across all four-cylinder builds.
How do you compare two candidate turbos?
Use the same engine assumptions for each candidate, then compare the factors that affect both performance and installation.

- Improved Fuel Economy: The use of a turbo can improve fuel economy. By utilizing the energy of the exhaust gases to compress the intake air, it improves the engine's combustion efficiency and reduces fuel consumption, thereby lowering fuel expenses.
| Comparison point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Compressor match | Whether the map accommodates the intended operating points and target airflow, including the usable efficiency region rather than only the upper flow limit. |
| Response and flow | Response in the engine’s useful RPM band versus high-RPM airflow and power headroom. |
| Turbine and housing | Whether the turbine wheel and housing suit the engine, manifold and use case. |
| Installation and control | Physical clearance, wastegate configuration, oiling, charge-air cooling and boost-control requirements. |
| Evidence for the match | Manufacturer application guidance and a complete setup check, not just a maximum-horsepower label. |
Product-family ratings describe capability ranges, not a fitment recommendation. BorgWarner lists its EFR range at rated peak capabilities of 225–1,100 HP per turbo and its AirWerks range at 220–1,875 HP per turbo on its current performance-turbochargers page, accessed in 2026. Neither range identifies which model suits an unspecified four-cylinder engine.
What else must the installation support?
A turbo is one part of a complete system. Before settling on a candidate, check that the installation can accommodate the manifold and exhaust, intake and charge piping, fuel and control strategy, and charge-air cooling. Confirm the oil feed and drain requirements and wastegate and boost-control arrangement in the documentation for the exact turbo model. Garrett’s installation guidance distinguishes oil-feed needs by bearing type and discusses internal and external wastegate arrangements; do not generalize those requirements across models.

How do you turn a shortlist into a decision?
- Write down the actual setup: displacement, crank-horsepower target, RPM range, use, fuel, engine modifications, manifold and packaging limits.
- Enter those details in a manufacturer matching tool: use Garrett Boost Adviser or BorgWarner Match Bot as a starting point, not as a substitute for confirming application fit.
- Review the compressor map and response tradeoff: verify the intended operating points and decide how much high-RPM flow matters relative to response.
- Check the turbine side and installation: match housing and turbine to the application, then confirm fitment, oiling, wastegate, boost control and charge-air requirements in model-specific documentation.
- Ask a qualified turbo specialist or distributor to review the result: Garrett recommends distributor review of its tool’s baseline candidates, particularly because modifications and tuning affect the match.
For a useful application-specific recommendation, have your displacement, crank-power goal, fuel, RPM range, vehicle and engine build ready. A product name or a single peak-power number cannot replace those inputs.
