Start with the look or amount of hair you want to leave, then choose a guard setting that fits your trimmer. If you are unsure, test a longer setting on a small area and shorten gradually. Guard lengths and increments vary by model, so check your device’s manual rather than treating any one set of millimetre options as universal. For body hair—especially sensitive areas—use the attachment intended for body grooming.
What a trimmer guard length means
On the cited Philips manuals, the millimetre setting describes how much hair remains after trimming. Check your own trimmer’s manual to confirm how its settings work; attachment design and available increments differ between models.
A setting is a useful starting point, not a guarantee of an exact appearance. Hair texture, growth direction, and personal preference can all affect how the result looks.

- Decide on the result. Choose whether you want very short stubble, a closer beard trim, or more length left in place.
- Check the guards your model supports. Read the manual or product specifications for the available lengths, whether the guards are included, and whether replacement guards fit your exact trimmer.
- Test longer first. If you are uncertain, use a longer setting on a small area. Shorten in measured steps until you reach the result you want.
For one Philips trimmer example, the manual lists stubble guards of 1 mm and 2 mm, plus beard guards of 3 mm, 5 mm, and 7 mm; those figures describe that device’s options, not an industry-wide range. Philips also describes the MG9522/50 with settings up to 20 mm. Fixed guards and adjustable systems can offer different increments, so compare the actual options for the model you own.

How body-hair trimming differs
Do not assume a beard comb is suitable for every body area. Some devices provide body guards or protectors designed for below-the-neck grooming. In the cited Philips manual, body-guard settings are 3 mm and 5 mm, and the manual recommends trying the 5 mm guard when trimming for the first time. It also states: “Always use a body guard when you trim sensitive areas.” Follow the instructions for your own device.
Philips support advises using the intimate guard on sensitive areas and starting at the highest setting. That is product-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every trimmer. Use only the attachment intended for the area and follow the device manual.

Beard combs and body combs are not interchangeable by default
Philips OneBlade support distinguishes its single-length beard combs, intended for facial hair, from its body comb, intended for body hair and designed to leave 5 mm. This is one manufacturer’s product guidance; check your trimmer’s own attachment compatibility before using a comb on a different area or device.
What to compare when choosing a trimmer
If you are selecting a trimmer to achieve a particular length, compare its usable range and intended use rather than relying only on the number of attachments in the box.
