Choose speaker wire by matching its thickness to the cable-run length and the speaker’s nominal impedance. For a typical home run of up to 50 feet to an 8-ohm speaker, Crutchfield says 16 AWG is sufficient; for longer runs, high-current amplifiers, or lower-impedance speakers, it points toward thicker 14 AWG wire. More conservative distance recommendations are shorter, so treat any chart as guidance for its stated assumptions—not a universal cutoff.

What speaker wire gauge should you use?

For a standard 8-ohm home speaker with a run up to 50 feet, Crutchfield identifies 16 AWG as sufficient. It suggests considering 14 AWG for longer routes, high-current amplifiers, or lower-impedance speakers. The right choice depends on both the length of the cable and the speaker load, rather than on the amplifier or room size alone.

AWG numbering runs opposite to thickness: a smaller number means a thicker conductor. Thus, 12 AWG is thicker than 14 AWG, and 14 AWG is thicker than 16 AWG. Thicker wire has lower resistance, which is useful when the run is long or the speaker impedance is low. See Crutchfield’s home speaker-wire guide.

How to choose a gauge for your setup

  1. Measure the actual cable route. Estimate the path from the amplifier’s speaker output to the speaker, including the distance around walls, furniture, or other obstacles. Room dimensions alone can understate the length of wire required.
  2. Check the speaker’s nominal impedance. Find the specification in the speaker’s documentation or product details. For the same run length, a lower-impedance speaker is a reason to favor thicker wire.
  3. Choose a recommendation basis. For an ordinary home run to a standard 8-ohm speaker, Crutchfield’s 16 AWG recommendation through 50 feet is a practical baseline. For longer runs, lower-impedance speakers, or high-current amplifiers, its guidance points toward 14 AWG.
  4. Check closer when your setup falls between examples. If your distance or impedance is not covered by a recommendation, follow the equipment maker’s connection guidance and consider calculating or measuring the cable resistance. The cited guidance does not set one mandatory gauge for every amplifier-and-speaker combination.
  5. Verify the wire listing. Confirm that the stated gauge and conductor material match what you intend to buy; do not assume that a product’s overall diameter establishes its conductor gauge.

How conservative distance recommendations compare

Audioholics gives these recommended maximum distances for 14 AWG wire. They are its guidance, not universal limits or a formal installation requirement.

  • EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
Speaker nominal impedance Audioholics recommended distance for 14 AWG
8 ohms 35 feet
6 ohms 30 feet
4 ohms 20 feet

The comparison shows why a single gauge recommendation cannot answer every setup: Audioholics recommends shorter runs as impedance decreases. Its distance table is at Audioholics’ speaker-wire gauge guide. Crutchfield’s more accessible 16 AWG-through-50-feet rule for standard 8-ohm speakers and Audioholics’ shorter 14 AWG distances use different recommendation thresholds, so they should not be combined as though they were one universal standard.

Why wire resistance matters

Audioholics describes resistance as the most important speaker-cable metric. Cable resistance is in series with the speaker, so it reduces the signal power delivered to it; it can also make changes in the speaker’s impedance more influential on frequency response. The practical goal is to keep resistance appropriate for the length and load, not to buy wire on the assumption that a brand or decorative construction will improve sound.

  • IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (50 feet)
  • CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
  • CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
  • SIMPLE INSTALL: White line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up

Audioholics gives nearly 1 ohm of cable resistance as an illustrative example of what would be needed to reduce signal level by 1 dB for an 8-ohm speaker. That is an example from its article, not a universal acceptable-resistance threshold or a gauge-selection rule.

Do not confuse speaker wire with amplifier power wire

A car amplifier’s power-and-ground wire carries supply current; speaker wire carries the amplifier’s output to the speakers. A power-wire chart sized by amplifier output, current draw, amplifier class or efficiency, and supply-wire length does not determine the gauge needed for the speaker-output cable.

It is perfect for achieving outstanding audio performance, exceptional flexibility, easy stripping and great polarity identification.
  • COPPER-CLAD ALUMINUM (CCA) - Made with an aluminum core and coated with a layer of copper, this cost effective speaker wire provides great conductivity with minimal signal loss.
  • PERFECT FOR - Designed to provide adequate performance for any home theater system, car audio speakers or professional studio. It's a great choice for both DIY enthusiasts and professionals.
  • SIMPLE INSTALLATION - Use this wire to easily connect your home theater or car audio speakers to any A/V receiver or amplifier.
  • SOFTFLEX JACKET - Our wire is shielded with a soft and flexible jacket, which not only provides a great appearance, but also ensures maximum durability and easy installation.

Crutchfield’s car amplifier wire-gauge chart addresses power and ground wiring. Its note that same-gauge copper-clad aluminum (CCA) does not handle as much current as copper applies to that power-wiring context; it should not be turned into a speaker-wire ampacity comparison.
