Measure the clear, flat, magnetic area of your vehicle before choosing a sign. A 12 × 18-inch or 12 × 24-inch magnet may be a useful starting point, and 30 mil (0.030 in) is the conventional thickness most consistently listed for vehicle magnets in the cited supplier guidance—but neither dimension nor thickness guarantees a fit or suitability for every vehicle. Check the exact product specifications and instructions.
Measure the vehicle before choosing a size
There is no universal car-magnet size that fits every vehicle. Measure the usable width and height of the specific panel where the sign will sit, then compare those measurements with the sign dimensions. The magnet needs to lie fully against a compatible metal surface; a non-magnetic area will not hold it.
Signs.com instructs customers to use a “flat magnetic vehicle surface (no curves, bumps, and no molding).” Avoid sizing across body curves, molding, seams, handles, or raised features that would interrupt contact. A sign that fits the panel’s overall dimensions may still be unsuitable if part of it has to span an obstruction.

Supplier listings show a range of available dimensions, but their recommendations are not a cross-manufacturer standard or a fit chart for every model.

Choose dimensions based on the actual flat panel rather than the vehicle category alone. If no listed size fits while keeping full contact, ask a supplier whether a different dimension is available.
Choose thickness by comparing the exact material
Hadrus Vinyl Graphics, Signs.com, and Squaresigns list conventional vehicle magnets at 30 mil (0.030 in). These are supplier product specifications, not proof that every product at that thickness has the same holding strength or is appropriate for every application.

Rochester Magnet describes a 0.015-in high-energy product as providing performance comparable to thin standard material while sitting closer to the vehicle surface. That is a claim about its product, not a general equivalence for all magnets at 0.015 in. If considering a thinner option, confirm its specific holding strength and intended use with the supplier rather than comparing thickness alone.
Consider shape and exposed edges
Simple rectangles are easier to assess against a panel’s width and height. Rounded corners are offered as a way to reduce the chance of wind catching an edge, according to supplier guidance. Neither a particular outline nor a thickness establishes a universally safe size or speed for all vehicle-and-sign combinations. Prefer a shape that lies flat and follow the product’s instructions.

Install and care for the sign
- Confirm the contact area. Check that it is magnetic, flat, smooth, and large enough for the full sign without curves, bumps, molding, seams, or handles underneath.
- Clean and dry both surfaces. Signs.com and FASTSIGNS advise cleaning the vehicle area and magnet before application.
- Place the sign flat. Follow the specific product instructions; contact and care guidance can vary by supplier.
- Inspect beneath it regularly. Signs.com advises removing the magnet regularly to clean beneath it. FASTSIGNS advises checking behind the sign weekly; its product details may vary by location.
- Remove it before washing. Signs.com advises taking magnets off before a mechanical car wash or power washing.

- Confirm that the contact surface is magnetic metal and allows full, smooth contact.
- Check the stated thickness and material; do not assume products with the same thickness are equivalent.
- Review corner shape and the supplier’s installation, inspection, and removal instructions.
