There is no single best platform for horror games. Start with the specific game and edition you want, then weigh the hardware you already own, your preference for adjustable settings, and whether you need to play online with friends. Availability, features, accessibility options, cross-play, and subscription requirements can differ by edition, so check the exact regional store listing before buying.
What to compare before choosing
- Availability: Confirm that the game and the edition you want are sold for your platform in your region. Do not assume a title appears on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox at the same time—or at all.
- Total cost: Factor in the hardware you already own, the game’s current regional price, and any subscription needed for online play. Prices and store terms change; compare the listings directly rather than assuming one platform is cheaper.
- Edition features: Check the exact version for graphics, controls, accessibility options, and other features. Platform editions are not guaranteed to match.
- Online play: If you plan to play with friends, confirm both whether the game has multiplayer and whether it supports cross-play between your platforms. Check console online-play requirements too.
When PC is the better fit
Choose PC if you value configurable graphics and input options and your computer meets the requirements for the specific game. Performance depends on the title and hardware; without a relevant benchmark, it is not safe to say that PC will run a game better than a console.

For example, the Until Dawn PC announcement describes customization and accessibility features, separate PC specification tiers, and Steam Input remapping. Use a game’s own published requirements to judge your machine rather than relying on general claims about PC performance.
You can also use a controller if you prefer gamepad input. Sony says the DualSense controller works with supported PC games, but features vary by title and haptics may require a USB connection. It is an option, not a requirement for horror games.
#1 Best Overall
- Gorgeous Pixel Art & Animation: The game captures the essence of the Terrifier films with bright, cartoonish pixel art and fluid animations that vividly depict the gruesome action.
- Multiplayer Mayhem: Team up with up to 4 players for a chaotic local co-op experience. Work together—or against each other—in various game modes. Travel through multiple stages, each with different paths to explore and enemies to defeat. Prepare yourself for intense boss battles that will test your skills.
- Bloody Arsenal of Weapons: From chainsaws to cleavers, pick up a variety of weapons to turn your enemies into bloody pulp. Enjoy hilarious and gory attacks that make every fight as entertaining as it is brutal. The finishing moves are guaranteed to leave a gory delight impression! Relive the golden age of gaming with a glorious chiptune soundtrack that perfectly complements the retro aesthetic.
- Multiple Game Modes: With 6 different game modes, whether you're looking for a quick beat 'em up session or an extended challenge, there's a mode that fits your style.
- Languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (LATAM), and Spanish (Spain) in game text.
When PlayStation is the better fit
PlayStation makes sense if you already own the console that runs the game or prefer its particular edition. Check that edition’s feature list rather than assuming it matches the PC version.
Sony’s Until Dawn page describes PS5 accessibility features including customizable controls, audio and visual options, QTE settings, and glint enhancement. The PC announcement documents a separate set of features and requirements, illustrating why it is worth comparing editions directly. Catalog availability can vary by region and date.

When Xbox is the better fit
Xbox is a practical choice if you already own compatible Xbox hardware or the specific horror game you want is available there. Check the listing for whether the game is single-player, multiplayer, or both, and whether online console play requires a membership.
For a specific example, the Xbox listing for Halloween: The Game identifies both single-player and online modes and says online multiplayer on console requires a qualifying Game Pass membership sold separately. That is a condition for this listing, not a rule to assume for every Xbox horror game.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Check cross-play before buying for friends
Having the same game on different platforms does not guarantee that players can join each other. Confirm cross-play for the exact title and platform combination before deciding where to buy. Konami’s Silent Hill 2 FAQ states that the game does not support cross-play between PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. If playing together is essential, verify the game’s current official information rather than inferring support from its platform list.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.

A quick decision path
- Pick the horror game and edition you want.
- Check its availability and current price in the store for your region.
- If you are considering PC, compare your computer with that game’s published requirements and review its settings and control options.
- Compare accessibility and other edition-specific features on the official listings.
- If you want multiplayer, check the supported platforms, cross-play, and any console online-membership requirement.
- Prefer the option that fits your existing hardware and the features that matter to you; do not pay for a new platform based on a general claim that it is best for horror.
