For better photo prints, choose a finish that suits the image and where you will display it, confirm that your printer supports the paper and size, then match the driver’s media type to the paper you loaded. Use a photo-quality preset, check color-management settings, and make a small proof before printing a batch.

Choose a finish for the photo and its display

Paper finish affects sheen, glare, and presentation; it is a starting point rather than a guarantee of how an image will look. The image, paper surface, lighting, and printer all contribute to the result.

Finish When to consider it What to keep in mind
Glossy Vivid-looking snapshots and photographs where reflections are acceptable. HP describes glossy as suited to vibrant color, and Epson calls glossy a good texture for photographs. HP’s home photo-printing guide and Epson’s photo print guide offer these as general guidance, not a ranking for every printer or image.
Matte Display where you want less surface reflection, or images that suit an artistic presentation. HP describes matte as glare-free for display; Epson notes that matte media can suit artistic representation. The appearance still depends on the particular paper and viewing conditions.
Satin, semi-gloss, or luster A middle ground to consider when you want some sheen without full gloss. Manufacturers use different names, and the finishes are not necessarily identical. HP mentions satin as a general-use finish; Epson and Canon list semi-gloss or luster media in their examples.

Before buying paper, check the printer’s supported media and sizes, whether the desired size supports borderless printing, and how the surface will look in the room’s lighting. These sources do not establish comparable paper prices, so there is no evidence-based price ranking here.

Match the driver setting to the paper you loaded

In the print dialog, select the actual paper size and the closest exact media-type entry for the paper in the tray. Avoid choosing a generic type without checking: Epson says the Type or Media Type setting tells the driver what paper is in use and adjusts ink coverage. Its Paper Type Settings guidance maps particular Epson papers to specific driver entries. Canon’s G2070 Series manual likewise gives product-to-setting examples; those mappings are not universal instructions for other models.

Driver labels and supported combinations vary by printer, operating system, and paper. Check the current manual for your exact model. Epson explicitly notes that media support differs by printer, and Canon notes that supported sizes and media types for the G2070 series may depend on the operating system.

Set up a home inkjet photo print

  1. Confirm compatibility. Look up the printer’s supported media and sizes before loading a new paper. Check borderless support separately if you need prints without a white margin.
  2. Load the paper as its instructions specify. Check the printer manual for the correct printable side and feed source. There is no universal loading orientation for every printer and paper.
  3. Set paper size and media type. In the print dialog, choose the loaded sheet size and its matching driver entry, or the closest exact entry available for that paper.
  4. Choose a photo-quality preset. Use the manufacturer’s Photo or Best option when detail matters; names and controls vary. Print a small crop or proof first, then inspect sharpness, color, banding, and edges before using more stock. HP recommends a small test print before committing to photo paper. HP’s guide also recommends Best or Photo quality as a starting point.
  5. Choose one color-management path. If your editing application has the appropriate printer-and-paper ICC profile workflow, use it and disable printer-side color correction as appropriate. Otherwise, let the printer manage color. Do not knowingly have both the application and printer apply color corrections. HP warns against double management, and Epson recommends soft-proofing when the application supports it. See HP’s color guidance and Epson’s photo print guide.
  6. Set the layout deliberately. Choose whether you want a border. Enable borderless only for a supported paper-and-size combination, and allow image bleed beyond the edges because the printer may enlarge the image to fill the sheet.
  7. Review before printing more. Let the print dry or settle as the paper instructions require, then assess it in the lighting where it will be viewed.

Check the image resolution at the print size

Image pixel dimensions matter at the size you intend to print. HP recommends 300 DPI at the target print size and gives 1200 × 1800 pixels as its example for a 4 × 6 inch print. That is HP’s recommendation in its guide, not a universal threshold for every printer, print size, or viewing distance; the accessed guide does not state a publication year. If a print looks soft or pixelated, check the source file’s dimensions at the requested size and avoid using a small, compressed thumbnail.

Use borderless printing only when the combination supports it

Borderless printing fills the page by enlarging the image, which can crop the edges. Canon’s Printing Area guidance documents this behavior and warns that unsupported paper can reduce quality or alter hues for the models covered on that page. The page was last updated on 2008-03-03, so check the current manual for your own printer rather than treating its supported-paper details as universal. Before printing, compare the photo’s aspect ratio with the sheet and keep important detail away from the edges.

Troubleshoot common photo-print problems

  • Washed-out or smeared output: Verify that the selected media type matches the paper. The driver uses this setting to adjust ink coverage.
  • Color differs from the screen: Check whether both the application and printer are applying color adjustment. Use an appropriate ICC profile if available, or let the printer manage color; soft-proof if your application supports it.
  • Soft or pixelated print: Check the file’s pixel dimensions at the final print size and use a less-compressed source if available.
  • Unexpectedly clipped edges: With borderless printing, check the image-to-paper aspect ratio and account for the crop caused by enlargement to fill.
