Choose a woven wrap size for the wearer and the carries they plan to tie—not for the newborn’s age or weight. Then compare the specific wrap’s fiber blend, weight, weave, care instructions and finished length. Whatever the fabric, a newborn’s face must remain visible and unobstructed, with the chin kept off the chest; follow the wrap’s own instructions.
Choose the wrap length for the wearer and carry
Start with the manufacturer’s size chart for the exact wrap model. Numbered sizes are not standardized between brands, so check the finished length in metres or feet rather than assuming that a size 5 or size 6 from one maker matches another.
The amount of fabric you need also depends on the carry. A multi-pass front carry generally uses more length than a shorter carry. If two caregivers will share one wrap, BabyMonkey advises choosing the larger of the sizes that suit each wearer.

Use size 6 as a starting point, not a rule
BabyMonkey describes size 6 as a general choice, size 5 for shorter or slimmer wearers, and size 7 for taller or larger wearers. These are that manufacturer’s guideposts, not a universal conversion chart. BabyMonkey also says a child’s age and weight are not indicators for choosing wrap size. Check the finished length
Confirm the wrap’s stated finished dimensions and whether they refer to the item after washing. If a seller gives preshrunk dimensions, use those. DIY advice to allow extra yardage for shrinkage when sewing fabric into a wrap is not a universal allowance for a finished commercial product.
Compare fabric by blend, weight and care
No fiber or weight is best for every newborn. Blend, weave, finishing and care requirements affect how a wrap handles and feels. Read the product label and manual, and treat manufacturers’ descriptions as guidance about their own products rather than guarantees for every wrap made from the same fiber.

Understand what a GSM number tells you
GSM means grams per square metre, a measure of fabric weight. It is one product attribute, not a safety rating or a stand-alone measure of suitability. BabyMonkey says its own wraps are around 250 g/m²; that figure describes its products, not a requirement for newborn wraps. Assess the individual wrap and its instructions rather than choosing by GSM alone.

Check fit and airway position with a newborn
Choosing a length and fabric is only part of using a wrap. Connecticut Department of Public Health’s 2021 babywearing handout says the baby’s chin should be off the chest and the baby visible. NATIBABY’s woven-wrap manual likewise says to keep the face uncovered and clearly visible and prevent the chin resting on or near the chest. Check the baby’s position often; the Connecticut DPH handout and NATIBABY manual provide their respective guidance.
- Keep the baby’s face visible, with the nose and mouth unobstructed.
- Keep the chin off the chest and check the baby’s position regularly.
- Follow the selected wrap’s instructions and use it only within its stated limits. Do not apply another brand’s age or weight limits to your wrap.
- Inspect the wrap for damage and make sure knots and adjustments are secure, as the product manual directs.
NATIBABY advises consulting a health professional before using its carrier for a low-birthweight baby or a child with a medical condition. That is guidance for its product, not a universal limit for all wraps. If you are unsure whether you can get a secure newborn fit, seek hands-on help from an appropriately qualified babywearing educator.

Make the decision in this order
- Choose the carry. Identify the carry you expect to use, since different techniques require different lengths.
- Use the wearer’s measurements and brand chart. Check the exact model’s size guide; if caregivers share the wrap, account for the larger wearer’s needs.
- Verify finished length. Check the product’s stated dimensions and any information about preshrinking or washing.
- Compare the fabric details. Review fiber percentages, weight, weave and care requirements. Choose based on handling and comfort, not on a claim that a particular fiber is inherently newborn-specific.
- Read the manual and check positioning. Confirm the wrap’s stated limits and instructions, then keep the baby’s face visible and airway unobstructed during use.
