There is no single correct mobile screenshot size: choose dimensions for the store, device class and orientation you support. For an Apple App Store listing, start with the largest required iPhone class for your app—or the required 13-inch iPad set if the app runs on iPad. For Google Play, follow its file rules and select the supported device type; for phone listing artwork, Google recommends at least 1080 × 1920 px portrait or 1920 × 1080 px landscape.
Start with the destination and device
A screenshot for an App Store listing is not automatically the right size for Google Play, a social post or an in-app help page. First decide where the image will appear, then identify the device classes your app supports and the orientation that reflects its real use. Store requirements and promotional recommendations are related, but they are not the same thing: a file can meet a validator’s general limits without meeting the size Google recommends for phone promotion.
For an app distributed in both stores, maintain separate exports when their required device sets or presentation needs differ. Do not assume one portrait image will suit iPhone, iPad, Android tablets and every promotional placement equally well.
Apple App Store screenshot sizes
Apple groups iPhone screenshot dimensions by display class and model. The dimensions below are examples listed for those classes; use the exact accepted dimensions for the models in your App Store Connect workflow. Landscape dimensions are the portrait dimensions reversed.

Which iPhone set should you prepare?
Start with the largest required display class your app supports. If an iPhone app does not provide the 6.9-inch screenshots, Apple marks the 6.5-inch set as required. Apple can scale accepted larger screenshots down for smaller device sizes when smaller-class screenshots are not provided. That can reduce the number of separate exports you maintain, but inspect the scaled result: small interface details and embedded captions may not remain as legible.
Apple’s current dimension table also includes 6.3-inch, 6.1-inch, 4-inch and 3.5-inch classes. The model-specific values for those sets are not all enumerated here; verify the accepted dimensions for the exact device group rather than substituting a nearby resolution.
iPad is a separate requirement
If your app runs on iPad, Apple requires a 13-inch iPad screenshot set. Listed portrait examples are 2064 × 2752 px or 2048 × 2732 px, with the dimensions reversed for landscape. Do not assume the iPhone set or its automatic scaling replaces the required iPad set.

Apple file rules
App Store Connect accepts one to ten screenshots in JPEG, JPG or PNG format. Apple says screenshots cannot contain alpha channels or transparency. Check the exported file itself—not just the design canvas—because export settings can preserve transparency unexpectedly.

Google Play screenshot sizes
Google Play supports screenshot targets for phones, 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, Chromebooks, Android TV, Wear OS, Android Automotive OS and Android XR. You can add up to eight screenshots for each supported device type. Choose the device type that matches the experience shown; a phone screenshot is not a substitute for a tablet or TV presentation when you support those device categories.
General file validation
- Use JPEG or 24-bit PNG without an alpha channel.
- Each dimension must be at least 320 px and no more than 3840 px.
- The longest dimension cannot be more than twice the shortest dimension.
- Upload no more than eight screenshots per supported device type.
Phone promotion recommendations
For app phone listings, Google recommends at least four screenshots at 1080 × 1920 px portrait (9:16) or 1920 × 1080 px landscape (16:9). Games have a separate recommendation threshold of at least three screenshots. These are recommendation-ready phone assets, not a replacement for the general validator limits above.

Google recommends showing the actual in-app or in-game experience, keeping added text to a minimum and localizing screenshots that contain text for each supported store language. A layout that looks clear at full resolution can become difficult to read in a listing preview, so check the image at the scale users will encounter it.
Portrait, landscape or both?
Match orientation to the actual app flow. A portrait-first messaging, shopping or banking experience usually calls for portrait artwork; a game or video editor built around a wide canvas may call for landscape. Export both only when the app genuinely supports both orientations or the listing needs distinct assets for each. Turning a portrait capture sideways does not create a useful landscape screenshot: composition, UI framing and captions need to suit the orientation.

A reliable sizing and export workflow
- Name the destination. Decide whether each asset is for App Store Connect, Google Play, a help page, social media or a presentation. Do not apply one store’s rules to another destination.
- List supported device classes. For Apple, record whether the app runs on iPhone, iPad or both. For Google Play, list each supported category—phone, tablet, Chromebook, TV, watch, car or XR—that needs listing artwork.
- Select the real orientation. Capture the experience in portrait or landscape as users see it. Create separate compositions when both are truly needed.
- Choose an accepted target size. Use an appropriate Apple device-class dimension for each required set. For Google Play phone promotion, use at least 1080 × 1920 portrait or 1920 × 1080 landscape when that matches the app.
- Export in an accepted format. Use JPEG or PNG as allowed by the destination. Remove alpha/transparency for these store screenshots.
- Inspect the actual exported file. Verify width, height, format and transparency in the file properties or an image editor. A design document’s canvas size does not guarantee that the exported file has those dimensions.
- Review at listing scale. Check that interface details and any necessary captions remain legible. Keep added text minimal, show the real app experience and prepare localized versions wherever embedded text needs translation.
How to choose between export options

Capture app screens without confusing them with store exports
For native app store artwork, capture the app on the relevant device or simulator and export to the store’s exact pixel dimensions. Troubleshooting rejected or poor-looking screenshots
The store rejects the dimensions
Check the exact device class and orientation, then inspect the exported file’s pixel dimensions. For Apple, nearby iPhone display classes can have different accepted sizes; for Google Play, verify both the 320–3840 px dimension range and the longest-side ratio rule. Do not rely on a scaled preview or a canvas label.
The image fails because of transparency
Export without an alpha channel for Apple and Google Play store screenshots. If a PNG remains transparent after changing the background visually, flatten the artwork against a solid background before export or use JPEG where appropriate.
The screenshot is technically valid but text is hard to read
Review it at the size used in the store listing. Reduce added copy, enlarge essential UI elements, or create a more focused composition. Google recommends minimal added text and actual in-app imagery; do not shrink a dense screen merely to fit a chosen canvas.
A scaled Apple image looks soft or poorly framed
Scaling a larger accepted class can cover smaller sizes, but it may not preserve the clarity or framing you want. Inspect the scaled output and provide a separate accepted class export if the smaller-device presentation needs adjustment.
Localized listings show the wrong language
When the screenshot includes captions or other text baked into the image, prepare localized artwork for the relevant store languages. Text inside the app may also reflect the captured app locale, so verify the displayed language before saving the capture.
