For most readers, the standard 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite is the best place to start: it already includes adjustable warm light, IPX8 water resistance and 16 GB of storage. Choose the Signature Edition if you will use its extra storage, wireless charging or automatic front-light adjustment; choose Paperwhite Kids if the child-focused cover and included Amazon Kids+ period fit your household.
Compare the current Paperwhite models
Amazon identifies the Paperwhite 12th Generation, Signature Edition and Kids Edition as 2024 releases. The specifications below are Amazon’s published figures, not independent test results.
| Model | Best fit | Storage and distinguishing features |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation) | Readers who want the core Paperwhite features without Signature extras | 16 GB internal storage (about 11.5 GB available); adjustable warm light; IPX8 water resistance; USB-C, dark mode and VoiceView listed; battery life estimated by Amazon at up to 12 weeks |
| Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th Generation) | Readers who want more local storage or charging and lighting conveniences | 32 GB internal storage (about 25 GB available); wireless charging (dock sold separately); automatic front-light adjustment; adjustable warm light; IPX8 water resistance; battery life estimated by Amazon at up to 12 weeks |
| Kindle Paperwhite Kids (12th Generation) | Families buying for a child who can benefit from the included bundle | 16 GB internal storage (about 11.5 GB available); kid-friendly cover and six months of Amazon Kids+; Paperwhite warm-light, battery and water-resistance features listed |
Choose based on how you read
For mostly text and routine charging, get the standard Paperwhite
If you mainly read books and charge with a cable, the standard model covers the central Paperwhite experience. The Signature Edition’s premium features are conveniences rather than prerequisites for reading on a Paperwhite.
For a large offline library, consider Signature Edition
Amazon lists about 11.5 GB available on the standard and Kids models, versus about 25 GB on Signature Edition. More room may matter if you keep many large files or audiobooks downloaded. If you mainly download text books and remove finished titles, the extra capacity may not change your routine.
#1 Best Overall
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Pay for wireless charging only if you will use it
Wireless charging is specific to Signature Edition among these current options, and its charging dock is sold separately. Include the dock in your decision: if you prefer USB-C cable charging, this feature may not justify choosing Signature.
For a child, weigh the bundle rather than the name alone
Paperwhite Kids pairs the device with a kid-friendly cover and six months of Amazon Kids+. Those inclusions make it a family-oriented choice; compare the offer’s usefulness to your child rather than assuming the Kids label means different reading hardware.

How much Kindle storage do you need?
Compare usable capacity, not just the number printed on the box: Amazon lists 16 GB internal storage as about 11.5 GB available, and 32 GB as about 25 GB available. The gap between internal and available capacity means the advertised figure is not all free for your content.

What to know about water resistance
Amazon describes the current Paperwhite variants as IPX8 waterproof and says the device has been tested to withstand brief accidental immersion under certain conditions. That is useful protection for spills or accidents, not permission to read underwater.

- Amazon warns that a drop or other damage may compromise water protection.
Treat water resistance as a safety margin and follow the care instructions for your device.
Should you buy an older or refurbished Paperwhite?
An older model can be worth considering if its condition, price and remaining support suit you. Amazon’s published security-update dates differ by generation; those dates are not a claim that a Kindle stops working afterward, nor do they establish that every feature is identical.

Does Kindle Unlimited affect which Paperwhite to buy?
Kindle Unlimited is a separate subscription, not a Paperwhite hardware feature. Amazon describes it as access to eligible digital books and also lists audiobooks, comics, manga and magazines; eligible titles can also be read on Kindle apps for phones, computers or tablets. Amazon says a subscriber may borrow up to 20 titles at once. Magazine issues count toward that limit, including under a change effective April 22, 2026, and the catalog can change. Eligibility varies by territory, and a trial converts to a paid monthly subscription if it is not cancelled under the applicable offer.
Best Value
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
If you frequently borrow eligible titles, the service may suit your reading routine, but it does not require buying a particular Paperwhite model.
