Choose settings according to the instructions for your exact brush dryer, then adjust for your hair and the task. There is no universal heat-and-speed map: some models couple heat and airflow, while others have separate controls or are heated styling brushes rather than dryers. On Revlon’s One-Step Dryer & Volumizer RVDR5222F, the manufacturer recommends LOW for fine or thin hair, HIGH for thick or coarse hair, and COOL to help lock in the style.
Start with the controls on your exact model
Heat and speed labels do not mean the same thing on every appliance. Read the manual for the model in hand before choosing a setting; do not transfer one brush’s temperature or hair-type guidance to another.
For the Revlon One-Step Dryer & Volumizer RVDR5222F, Revlon gives this model-specific direction: “Use the LOW setting for fine or thin hair and the HIGH setting for thick or coarse hair. Use the COOL setting to lock in your style.” See Revlon’s product guidance.

Other products use different control layouts. Mermade’s manual specifies low heat/high speed at 140°F/60°C, medium at 203°F/95°C, and high at 239°F/115°C for the models covered by that manual. Those are product specifications, not universal recommendations for hair types or other brush dryers. Check Mermade’s manual.
#1 Best Overall
- Full-bodied blowouts: The 2.8 in oval barrel smooths hair while rounded edges help create lift, volume, and curled ends
- Best for longer lengths: Choose this larger-barrel dryer brush for mid-length to long hair and a classic, high-volume blowout
- Dry and style in 1 step: Use on damp hair to dry, smooth, and volumize without juggling a separate dryer and round brush
- Control your finish: Select Cool, Low, or High to tailor airflow and heat to your styling needs
- Smooth with tension: Nylon pins and tufted bristles help grip and guide hair for controlled styling from roots to ends
Choose a setting for the stage of styling
Prepare before turning on the brush
Towel-dry excess water and detangle first when your model’s instructions call for it. Revlon includes both steps in its preparation guidance. Working with manageable sections can make it easier to dry and shape the hair evenly.
Dry first, then shape
If the manual supports a staged approach, use a more effective drying setting to remove moisture, then lower heat or speed as the hair approaches dry and you begin shaping. Remington’s AC9096 dryer manual advises: “When hair is almost dry, lower the heat and speed setting and begin to style.” This is guidance for that dryer; follow your brush dryer’s own instructions if they differ. Read the Remington AC9096 manual.

Use cool mode only as directed
If your brush dryer has a cool mode and its manual permits it, use it at the finishing stage. Revlon says COOL can lock in the style on the RVDR5222F. Remington’s AC9096 manual describes its cool shot as setting a style by blowing a cool stream of air. These instructions apply to the named products, not automatically to every brush.
Know what product comparisons do—and do not—tell you
Compare the controls and intended use rather than judging products by a setting label alone. A “high” setting on one device is not necessarily equivalent to a “high” setting on another.

- Closer-to-root styling: The smaller 2.4 in oval barrel offers added control for root lift, soft waves, flips, and curls
- Best for shorter lengths: Choose Volumizer Plus for chin length to mid-length hair or when you want more precision than a 2.8 in barrel
- 6 heat settings: Select Cool, Low, Medium, or High for more styling control across drying, shaping, and refreshing
- Detachable for storage: Remove the brush head for compact storage and easier packing; the detachable design also enables dryer use
- Detangle and smooth: Charcoal-infused pins and tufted bristles help detangle, grip, and guide hair while creating a polished finish
| Product example | Controls or temperatures described by the manufacturer | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Revlon One-Step Dryer & Volumizer RVDR5222F | Three heat/speed settings: low, high, and cool. | Revlon recommends low for fine or thin hair, high for thick or coarse hair, and cool to lock in the style. Source. |
| Mermade Brush Dryer models covered by its manual | Low heat/high speed: 140°F/60°C; medium: 203°F/95°C; high: 239°F/115°C. | These combinations and temperatures belong to the named models in the manual; they are not a general hair-type chart. Source. |
| Beper hot-air brush | Three temperature levels and two speeds. | The manufacturer’s control configuration shows that temperature and airflow can be separate. Source. |
| Remington Volume & Straight Brush | Temperature levels listed as 150, 190, and 230. | It is described as a heated styling brush, so its temperature levels should not be treated as equivalent to a combined hot-air brush’s heat-and-speed settings. Source. |
When comparing a brush dryer, check whether heat and airflow are separate or coupled, whether there is a cool setting, what hair-type guidance the manufacturer gives, and the intended hair length and brush form. Also review the appliance’s safety and cleaning directions.

- Keep air inlets and outlets clear during use. The Remington Hydraluxe AS8901AU use-and-care manual warns that blocked grilles can trigger automatic shutoff. See the AS8901AU manual copy.
- Follow the manual’s directions for preparation, operation, and cleaning; do not assume a setting or technique is safe for every model.
- A heat-protection spray is an optional adjunct: the Remington AC9096 manual recommends one before blow-drying, but that recommendation does not establish that a spray guarantees protection from heat effects.
No universal safe temperature or damage threshold for all hair types and brush dryers is established by the product guidance cited here. Treat temperature figures as specifications for the named models, not as clinical limits.
