Match the frame’s image size to the photo’s actual print dimensions, then decide whether you want the picture to fill the frame or sit inside a mat. A 5×7-inch print fits a 5×7 frame without a mat, or an 8×10 frame with a mat opening sized for a 5×7. Before choosing a larger print, check the crop so it does not cut off faces or other important details.
Start with the print and the frame opening
Frame listings can describe different measurements: the image size a frame holds, the mat opening, and the frame’s outside dimensions. Confirm the print’s actual dimensions and the frame’s image size. If the frame includes a mat, check its opening too; a mat opening is often slightly smaller than the print so it can overlap the edges and hold the photo in place.
For example, Frame Destination lists an 8×10-inch frame with a 4.75×6.75-inch opening for a 5×7 photo, and an 11×14-inch frame with a 7.75×9.75-inch opening for an 8×10 photo. These are examples, not universal measurements, so check the specifications for the frame you plan to buy. See Frame Destination’s size examples.

For a photo that fills the frame
Choose a frame whose image size matches the print: a 4×6 frame for a 4×6 print, a 5×7 for a 5×7, or an 8×10 for an 8×10. This gives the photo an edge-to-edge presentation.

For a border around the photo
Choose a larger frame with a mat opening made for the print. A 5×7 photo, for example, can go in an 8×10 frame with a 5×7 mat opening. The mat creates visual space around the picture; the frame’s outside dimensions will be larger than its image size.

Choose based on the room and viewing distance
A compact 4×6 can suit a desk or nightstand, while a 5×7 can be easier to notice on a bookshelf or console. An 8×10 can serve as a larger focal photo on a mantel or in a more spacious display. Treat these as starting points: consider the available space, how far away the photo will be viewed, and whether you want the photograph to be a quiet accent or a focal point.

Check the crop before ordering
The common sizes do not share the same aspect ratio: 4×6 is 3:2, 5×7 is 5:7, and 8×10 is 4:5. Changing the print size can therefore crop the original image. Review the print preview before placing an order, paying particular attention to faces, hands, and anything else you want to keep in the picture. Leave some breathing room around the subject when possible.
Make sure the image can support the print size
Frapery suggests a resolution of at least 300 DPI at the intended print size and gives these pixel dimensions as examples:

These are the guide publisher’s recommendations, not a guarantee of print quality. Sharpness, cropping, and viewing distance also affect how a print looks. If the image file is smaller or already looks soft, consider a smaller print rather than enlarging it.

Use preservation-specific materials for a photograph you want to keep
For a photograph intended for long-term preservation, do not assume that the backing or precut mat included with a ready-made frame is suitable for preservation. The Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services advises: “Choose the right size frame, at least two inches larger on each side of the item to accommodate the matting.” It gives a 12×14-inch frame for an 8×10-inch photograph as an example. The department also recommends a frame with a deep rabbet—the recess that holds the contents—to accommodate glazing, matting, the photograph, and backing. Its guidance cautions that backing and precut mats sold with a frame are not suitable for preservation matting. Read the Florida Department of State’s framing guidance.
