The best home vacuum is the one suited to your mix of carpet, rugs and hard floors—and to the jobs you need it to handle. Compare floor-specific pickup, pet-hair cleaning, maneuverability and maintenance rather than choosing by a single suction claim or assuming one style is best for every home.
Start with your floors and cleaning tasks
List the surfaces you clean most often: carpet, area rugs and bare flooring such as hardwood. Then consider whether you need to remove pet hair, reach under furniture or clean upholstery and other above-floor surfaces. These needs help narrow the type of vacuum worth comparing; Consumer Reports’ buying guide recommends choosing around flooring and cleaning needs.
For a home with mostly noncarpeted floors, a canister is one option to consider. That is not a guarantee of better results: the floorhead, its compatibility with your surfaces and the machine’s handling all matter. In a home with several surface types, look for evidence about performance on both carpet and bare floors.
Which vacuum type fits your home?
| Type | What the available evidence supports | What to check for your home |
|---|---|---|
| Upright | Consumer Reports evaluates uprights for pickup on carpet and bare floors, pet hair, maneuverability, features and maintenance, emissions, and airflow. | Performance on your floor types, pet-hair pickup if relevant, ability to maneuver around furniture, and maintenance demands. |
| Canister | Consumer Reports identifies canisters as an option for homes with mostly noncarpeted flooring. | Floorhead and surface match, reach under furniture, handling, and whether the bin or bag routine suits you. |
| Robot | A 2026 Consumer Reports roundup includes the Roomba Max 705 as a robot-vacuum example; the available result does not establish its suitability for a particular home. | How the model handles your floor plan, rugs and transitions; automation, dock footprint and upkeep. Verify details for the exact model. |
| Cordless stick | Consumer Reports’ 2026 search result refers to cordless-stick testing and runtime measurement, but does not verify an individual model here. | Runtime, charging, weight, bin size and pickup on your surfaces. |
These are comparison prompts, not proof that every model in a category has been tested on every listed measure.

- SWIVEL STEERING FOR EASY MANEUVERABILITY: Navigate tight spaces, corners, and around furniture with ease using smooth swivel steering for effortless control across floors.
Compare cleaning performance, not just suction
Consumer Reports says its upright tests assess debris pickup on carpet and bare floors, pet-hair pickup, maneuverability around and under furniture, features and maintenance, emissions, and airflow. Its airflow procedure measures with the bag or bin empty and after adding 100 grams and 200 grams of wood flour. Those quantities describe test loads, not product scores.
When comparing models, look for results that match your actual surfaces and tasks. A strong result on bare floors does not establish strong carpet cleaning, and a pet-hair result does not tell you how easy a vacuum is to move or maintain. The available sources do not establish a single performance measure that can stand in for all of these.

Use model names as starting points, not universal winners
Consumer Reports’ 2026 roundup search result names several examples and describes different strengths. Treat them as candidates to investigate, not as a complete or definitive ranking: the available extracts do not establish exact scores, current prices or the best choice for a particular household.

- Shark PowerDetect AZ4002: Consumer Reports’ upright result describes strengths in pet-hair and bare-floor tests. Check the current rating and exact configuration before comparing it with other uprights.
- Miele Blizzard CX1 Cat & Dog: Consumer Reports identifies it as a bagless canister example; its allergy-coverage result describes strong bare-floor and pet-hair performance. Verify current model details and ratings.
- iRobot Roomba Max 705: It appears in Consumer Reports’ 2026 roundup as a robot-vacuum example. The available result does not establish how it handles a specific layout, rugs or transitions, so confirm those details for the exact version.
Check filtration and upkeep when they matter
If emissions or filtration are important to your decision, compare the exact model’s documented details and the relevant test results rather than relying on a general label or an allergy-related claim. Consumer Reports has allergy-focused coverage that discusses filtration, emissions and pet hair, but the available information does not establish a complete allergy-buying protocol. Vacuum performance is not a medical guarantee.
