There is no proven universal “best” LLM for web scraping. The right choice depends on your pages, fields, accuracy threshold, volume, latency, privacy requirements, and total cost. Choose it with a representative evaluation set: run several candidate models and input formats against the same pages, measure field-level correctness and failure rates, then select the least expensive setup that meets your acceptance target.
Start by defining the scraping job
“Web scraping” can mean several different workloads. Extracting product prices from an already loaded page is not the same problem as discovering pages through search, operating a login flow, or clicking through filters. Separate these tasks before comparing models.
Describe the pages and page states
- Page type: static HTML, JavaScript-rendered content, or a mixture.
- Stability: predictable templates versus frequently changing layouts.
- Navigation: one-page extraction, pagination, repeated records, or multi-step interaction.
- Volume and service level: records per hour, concurrency, and maximum acceptable latency.
- Risk: whether a wrong value is harmless, costly, legally sensitive, or safety-critical.
Write the target schema first
List every output field, its type, whether it is required, and how absence should be represented. For example:
name: string, requiredprice: number, nullable when no price is showncurrency: three-letter string, required when a price existsavailability: one of a fixed set of allowed valuessource_url: URL, required
Define what counts as a missing value. Returning null is usually safer than inventing a value, but only if your downstream system handles it explicitly.

Build an evaluation set that resembles production
Keep a labeled collection of representative pages and ground-truth values. Include ordinary pages and the cases that cause failures: missing fields, repeated products, nested tables, ambiguous labels, unusual characters, consent dialogs, and changed templates. Reserve a holdout set that is not used while tuning prompts or preprocessing.
Run the same test for every candidate
- Fetch or render each page with the same browser and network settings.
- Apply one preprocessing variant, such as raw HTML, cleaned HTML, text, Markdown, or a DOM-derived structure.
- Send the identical schema and extraction instructions to each model.
- Record the raw response, parsed result, token usage, latency, retries, and errors.
- Compare results with the ground truth, then repeat for the next input representation.
Measure fields, not just whole records

Do not replace this test with a general question-answering or browser-agent leaderboard. WebLists evaluated 200 interactive extraction tasks and reported recall of 3% for search-capable LLMs and 31% for state-of-the-art web agents. Those figures describe that benchmark, not the accuracy of a particular extraction API or model on your pages.
Use structured output and verify semantics
Constrain the response
When the provider supports JSON Schema or an equivalent constrained format, use it. OpenAI’s structured-output guidance says, “To maximize the quality of model generations, we recommend the following:” and then recommends clearly and intuitively named keys, clear titles and descriptions for important keys, and evaluations for choosing a structure. Apply those principles to every provider you test.
A schema can require a number, but it cannot tell whether the number belongs to the correct product variant. Treat valid JSON as a formatting success, not proof that the answer is true.
Validate against the source
- Reject malformed JSON and type violations before storage.
- Check that every non-null value can be located in the fetched page or in an explicitly defined transformation of it.
- Reject prices from a different variant, currency, or subscription interval.
- Use bounded retries for structural failures; do not retry indefinitely on a semantic error.
- Sample-check apparently valid records against their source pages, with more review for high-risk fields.
Preprocess the page, then benchmark the representation
Removing navigation, scripts, ads, and unrelated boilerplate can reduce noise, but aggressive cleaning can also remove the relationships that make a value meaningful. Preserve labels, table headers, row and column relationships, repeated-record boundaries, and parent-child structure.

Compare raw HTML, cleaned HTML, plain text, Markdown, and structured DOM representations on the same evaluation set. NEXT-EVAL reported its best result among tested formats with Flat JSON using XPath keys, while that representation used more tokens than its hierarchical JSON alternative. This is evidence to test representations—not a rule that Flat JSON is best for every model or page.
What published results actually show
NEXT-EVAL authors reported an F1 score of 0.9567, precision of 0.9939, recall of 0.9392, and hallucination rate of 0.0305 for Gemini-2.5-pro-preview using Flat JSON on their synthetic extraction benchmark. Their results changed substantially with hierarchical JSON and slimmed HTML. These are benchmark-specific results, not a general accuracy guarantee.
A 35-site study titled Beyond BeautifulSoup compared LLM-assisted scripting with end-to-end agents across five security tiers. It found that agents can make complex workflows accessible with little prompt refinement, while LLM-assisted scripting can be simpler and faster for static sites. That finding supports matching the architecture to the task, not selecting an overall winner.

No independent, apples-to-apples comparison currently establishes one overall winner across major providers with comparable model versions, prices, latency, and scraping accuracy. Check current vendor documentation for model names, context limits, features, and prices before committing.

- Additional calls for pagination, navigation, or failed parses.
- Schema-repair retries and page re-fetches.
- Human review, reprocessing, and storage.
Calculate (fetching + rendering + inference + retries + review) / accepted records for each candidate. Scraping services may meter extraction and rendering separately, and vendor-authored comparisons can change as pricing changes; verify live prices before using their credit examples in a budget.
Separate fetching and rendering from extraction
An LLM cannot extract content that your fetcher never received. Browser setup must handle JavaScript, redirects, cookies, consent dialogs, bot checks, timeouts, and lazy-loaded images. Keep a page-verdict log so you can distinguish an empty source page from a model failure.

- Fetch the URL with a real browser when JavaScript is required.
- Wait for a selector, a fixed delay, or network idle—whichever matches the site.
- Accept or dismiss consent UI and hide newsletter or chat overlays before capture.
- Scroll or otherwise trigger lazy-loaded content.
- Save the final HTML or DOM snapshot and the exact URL, status, and timestamp.
- Run preprocessing and schema-constrained extraction.
- Validate values and retain the source snapshot for review.

The model returns valid JSON with the wrong value
Usually the page contains multiple variants or repeated labels. Preserve surrounding structure, include the selection rule in the schema description, and require evidence or a source fragment for high-risk fields. Add semantic checks rather than more formatting retries.
Required fields are frequently null
The content may be below a JavaScript-rendered boundary, behind a consent layer, or removed by over-aggressive preprocessing. Compare the saved browser DOM with the representation sent to the model and test a selector wait or a less destructive cleaner.
Responses exceed the context limit
Reduce irrelevant content, split repeated records into bounded chunks, or extract page-level metadata separately from record-level fields. Re-check the model’s current context documentation before setting chunk sizes.

Measure each stage separately. Cache unchanged pages, avoid sending duplicate boilerplate, batch independent records where supported, and cap retries. A cheaper model that requires frequent repairs may cost more per accepted record.

Bot checks, blank pages, or timeouts appear
Classify the page failure before calling the LLM. Change browser headers, waits, or rendering strategy only within the site’s terms, and do not treat an empty response as a missing field. A screenshot service that reports page verdict and billing status can keep these failures out of model-cost calculations.
A practical selection decision
- Set minimum field accuracy, maximum unsupported-value rate, latency, and cost-per-accepted-record thresholds.
- Choose two or more candidate models and at least two input representations.
- Run the fixed evaluation set, including a holdout set after tuning.
- Eliminate candidates that fail quality or privacy requirements.
- Choose the least costly remaining pipeline, then monitor drift by site and field.
Re-run the evaluation when a model, prompt, cleaner, browser, or target-site template changes. The “best” LLM is the one that continues to meet your measured requirements in the complete fetch-render-extract-validate-review system.

No universal winner is established. Test models and input representations on your own labeled pages, then select the least costly configuration that meets your field-level quality and operational thresholds.
How accurate is LLM extraction?
Accuracy varies by page, schema, preprocessing, and model. Published benchmark figures are task-specific; they should not be treated as a general guarantee for your scraper.
Should I use an LLM or traditional selectors?
Use deterministic selectors when templates are stable and fields are clearly located. Add an LLM where layouts vary or normalization is difficult, while retaining validation and fallbacks.
