The best air purifier for allergies is one with effective particle filtration—typically a HEPA filter—and a smoke CADR sized for the room where you will use it. Match the purifier to the room rather than relying on a large advertised coverage area, then compare noise, filter availability and upkeep. A purifier can reduce airborne particles such as pollen and pet dander, but it works best alongside source control, cleaning and ventilation.
What matters most when choosing an allergy air purifier?
Start with two specifications: particle filtration and clean air delivery rate (CADR). A HEPA filter targets airborne particles, including dust, pollen and pet dander. CADR indicates how quickly a portable cleaner can deliver filtered air; the smoke CADR is a practical figure to compare against room size. As AHAM explains, the EPA calls CADR “the most helpful parameter for understanding the effectiveness of portable air cleaners” in its CADR guidance.
- For particles: Look for HEPA filtration or clearly specified, comparable particle-removal performance.
- For gases and odors: Look for an activated-carbon stage. HEPA filtration alone does not filter gases; thicker carbon media generally offers more adsorption capacity.
- For the room: Check the smoke CADR and the room-size rating together. A large coverage claim without a matching CADR is not enough to establish cleaning performance.
EPA does not certify or recommend particular brands. Where possible, check a model in the AHAM Verifide directory. AHAM says listed models have independently verified tobacco-smoke, pollen and dust CADR values, tested by a third-party laboratory.
How to size a purifier for your room
For a standard 8-foot ceiling, AHAM’s rule of thumb is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. EPA’s guide gives estimated minimum CADR values for common room sizes as follows:

| Room area | EPA estimated minimum CADR | AHAM 2/3-rule smoke CADR |
|---|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm | At least 67 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm | At least 134 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm | At least 200 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm | At least 267 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm | At least 334 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm | At least 400 cfm |
The EPA estimates are from its Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home. The AHAM figures apply its two-thirds rule to an 8-foot ceiling; because both are sizing guides, use the model’s verified CADR and room conditions rather than treating a rounded threshold as a guarantee. AHAM’s consumer guidance, published December 4, 2024, says the recommended room size corresponds to at least 4.8 air changes per hour.
Small bedroom
Use the room’s floor area to set a minimum smoke CADR, then check whether the purifier can run quietly enough at the speed you expect to use overnight. Also compare replacement-filter cost and availability: a unit that is difficult or expensive to maintain may be less practical over time.

Large bedroom or living room
Use EPA’s CADR estimates or the AHAM directory to compare candidates. Open-plan spaces can be harder to clean evenly than a single enclosed room, and rooms with ceilings higher than 8 feet contain more air than the basic sizing rule assumes. Consider more than one unit when one purifier cannot serve the space effectively.

How to compare models without being misled by coverage claims
Use comparable, verifiable specifications rather than choosing by a manufacturer’s maximum coverage figure alone. The available guidance does not establish model-specific noise levels, replacement-filter prices, energy use or warranties, so check current manufacturer or retailer listings for each candidate before buying.

- Smoke CADR: Compare the certified or independently verified figure with your room’s area.
- Suggested room size: Treat it as useful context, not a substitute for checking CADR.
- Certification: Look for the model in AHAM Verifide when possible; its directory reports smoke, pollen and dust CADR.
- Noise: Check the sound level at the speed you will actually use, especially for a bedroom. A quiet low setting may deliver less air than a louder higher setting.
- Filter upkeep: Confirm replacement-filter availability and cost, and follow the maker’s replacement schedule.
- Energy, controls and warranty: Compare these practical ownership details in current product documentation.
Which features matter for pollen, pets and odors?
Pollen, dust and pet dander
Choose a purifier with HEPA particle filtration and adequate smoke or pollen CADR for the room. Keep the air intake unobstructed so the unit can draw room air through the filter. Combine filtration with cleaning and source control; for example, regular vacuuming can reduce settled material that may otherwise become airborne again.
Odors and volatile organic compounds
For gases and odors, look for a substantial activated-carbon filter stage. HEPA filters capture particles but are not, by themselves, gas filters. Carbon capacity matters: a thicker or larger carbon bed generally has more material available to adsorb gases and odors.

How to use and maintain a purifier
- Place it where people spend time. Leave the intake and outlet clear, and follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions.
- Run it at a useful speed. A lower, quieter setting may be more comfortable, but it may also clean more slowly; balance noise with the CADR you need.
- Check and replace filters on schedule. EPA warns, “If a filter is dirty and overloaded, it won’t work well.” Follow the purifier maker’s maintenance instructions and inspect filters as directed.
- Keep addressing the source. Continue cleaning, ventilating appropriately and managing moisture; filtration is one part of indoor-air management.
EPA cautions that “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” An air purifier can supplement steps to reduce pollutants, but it does not replace ventilation, cleaning, humidity control, removal of an allergen source or medical care. Reported symptom improvements in studies do not guarantee that a particular model will improve an individual’s symptoms.

For central heating and cooling, EPA recommends a filter rated at least MERV 13—or the highest efficiency rating the system fan can accommodate. Do not assume every system can use MERV 13: a filter that is incompatible with the equipment can restrict airflow. Confirm the correct size and rating with the system manufacturer or an HVAC professional before installing one.

Should you buy one purifier or use a whole-home approach?
A portable HEPA purifier is most directly useful in rooms where people spend time, provided its CADR suits the space. For a broader strategy, combine well-sized portable units with source control and suitable ventilation; consider higher-efficiency central filtration only when the HVAC equipment can handle it. Avoid ozone-generating devices as an allergy solution, and do not treat an air cleaner as a replacement for medical treatment.
