If a laptop’s memory and storage are fixed, choose enough RAM for the most demanding work you expect to do during its useful life, and enough internal storage for the apps and files you want available locally. For many general-purpose users, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD are sensible starting points—not universal minimums. Light use may fit 8 GB and 256 GB; demanding creative or professional work may call for 32 GB or more and 1 TB or more of storage.

RAM and storage do different jobs

RAM is the laptop’s short-term working memory: it holds information that active apps and tasks need. Its contents are lost when the device turns off or restarts. Storage keeps apps and files when the laptop is off. Microsoft describes RAM as affecting computer speed and performance in its laptop buying guide and explains its short-term role in All about computer memory.

That distinction matters when capacity is fixed. Cloud storage or an external drive can help when local file space runs short, but neither adds RAM. A shortage of RAM can constrain how many demanding apps or tasks you can run comfortably; a shortage of storage means you may need to remove or move files and apps.

Choose RAM for your heaviest likely workload

Start with the most demanding applications and tasks you realistically expect to use—not only what you do today. Consider what will be open at the same time, such as a browser with many tabs, an office app, a coding environment, or an editing program. Software makers’ requirements should take precedence for specialized applications.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.

ASUS’s 2026 laptop guide offers these workload-based recommendations. Microsoft’s guidance differs by context: its support page recommends 8 GB for longer-term use while describing 4 GB as a baseline for basic online tasks, and its Windows buying guide gives students a range of 8–16 GB. These are vendor guideposts, not guarantees for every user or application.

Workload RAM guidance How to use the guidance
Basic browsing and simple documents ASUS: 8 GB. Microsoft Support: at least 4 GB for basic online tasks; 8 GB recommended for longer-term use. If the memory cannot be expanded, favor 8 GB over a lower configuration when practical, especially if you expect more apps or tabs over time.
Study, office work, coding, and everyday multitasking ASUS: 16 GB for study, office, multitasking, coding, and general creative work. Microsoft: 8–16 GB for students. 16 GB is a reasonable comparison point for a general-purpose laptop, not a hard minimum.
Video editing, design, data analysis, virtual machines, and heavier creative work ASUS: 32 GB. Check the requirements of the particular tools and projects; a more demanding workload may need more.
Specialized 3D, scientific, engineering, or production work ASUS: 64 GB or more. Use application requirements and the size of your actual working sets to choose capacity.

RAM needs can also depend on the operating system, the applications involved, and whether integrated graphics share system memory. Don’t buy extra capacity solely for a vague promise of “future-proofing”; connect the choice to real tasks you expect to run.

Choose storage for what must stay on the laptop

Estimate the space needed for the operating system and apps, games or creative software, files you keep offline, and expected growth. Think about whether you want a large photo or video library, downloaded media, or project assets available without an internet connection.

Local-use pattern Storage guidance Practical interpretation
Documents, browsing, and a limited number of apps ASUS: 256 GB. Potentially sufficient for a light local workload, particularly if you keep few large files on the device.
Study and everyday use ASUS: 512 GB as a practical option for many students and everyday users. Microsoft’s student range: 256 GB to 1 TB or more. 512 GB is a useful starting point for a general-purpose laptop; the right choice depends on apps, offline files, and growth.
Creative apps, games, large photo libraries, or video projects ASUS: 1 TB or more. Microsoft’s gamer guide: 512 GB to 2 TB or more. Favor more internal capacity if large projects or libraries need to stay local.
Specialized professional projects No single capacity is set in the cited ASUS guidance. Estimate the footprint of the software, source files, assets, and active projects rather than assuming one capacity fits all.

Cloud storage can reduce how much file capacity you need on the laptop, as Microsoft notes in its buying guide. That trade-off depends on connectivity, how much you need offline, and whether keeping files online suits your workflow.

Check whether the exact configuration is really fixed

A laptop family can include configurations with different memory or storage arrangements. Verify the exact model number and configuration you intend to buy rather than inferring upgradeability from a similar-looking version.

  1. Find the full model number and the RAM and SSD configuration in the seller’s listing or manufacturer specifications.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for whether RAM is soldered, whether a memory slot is available, whether the SSD can be replaced, and whether an additional internal storage slot exists.
  3. Confirm that the documentation applies to your exact configuration and region. ASUS advises buyers to check whether SSD replacement is supported or an extra storage slot is included in its laptop guide.

If the documentation is unclear, ask the manufacturer or seller to confirm the upgrade options for that exact model before purchase.

Use external or cloud storage as a storage fallback

If internal storage cannot be upgraded, a portable external SSD can add file capacity. It is less convenient than space inside the laptop: you need to carry it, connect it to a port, and check compatibility with the laptop. ASUS discusses cloud and external storage as ways to manage capacity; RTINGS’ laptop buying guide also notes that an external drive can address a storage shortfall. Neither option solves a RAM limit.

Compare the laptop’s configuration price difference with the cost and inconvenience of external storage or cloud storage in your market. There is no universal configuration premium: prices and availability vary, so evaluate the actual options in front of you.

A practical selection sequence

  1. List your likely workloads. Include the most demanding apps and tasks you expect over the laptop’s useful life, plus the apps you commonly run together.
  2. Set RAM based on those workloads. Treat 16 GB as a general-purpose comparison point; consider 32 GB or more for heavier editing, virtual machines, analysis, or specialized professional work, after checking software requirements.
  3. Estimate local storage. Account for apps, games, current files, offline media, project assets, and growth. Decide which items can reliably live in the cloud or on an external drive.
  4. Verify upgradeability on the exact model. Check the manufacturer’s specifications or service documentation for memory and SSD options before paying for a configuration.
  5. Compare the real trade-offs. If RAM is upgradeable but storage is not, an external drive may help with files; if RAM is fixed, buy enough up front for your expected workload. RTINGS recommends prioritizing memory over storage when choosing between upgradeable capacity because storage can be extended externally whereas memory cannot.
