If you want a PS5 horror game that feels closest to the familiar survival-horror reference point, start with Resident Evil 4 (2023). For a different flavor, choose Silent Hill 2 for psychological atmosphere, Dead Space for science-fiction creature survival, or Alan Wake 2 for supernatural investigation. The Last of Us Part I is a strong adjacent choice if character-driven infected-world survival matters more than matching Resident Evil’s gameplay.
How to choose the right kind of horror
Decide what you want to keep from Resident Evil and what you want to change. The games below differ in setting, story emphasis, and the way their official descriptions frame the experience. These are practical recommendations based on PlayStation’s product descriptions, not standardized genre ratings or hands-on comparative testing.

- Put mystery and supernatural storytelling first: Alan Wake 2.
- Choose an infected-world story with character drama: The Last of Us Part I, an adjacent rather than direct mechanical match.
PS5 horror games to consider
Resident Evil 4 (2023): the closest starting point
For a familiar survival-horror starting point, Resident Evil 4 is the clearest choice in this group. The US PlayStation Store listing covers PS4 and PS5, identifies Capcom as publisher, and categorizes the game as Horror, Adventure, and Action. Its description follows Leon Kennedy on a mission in a European village and highlights modernized gameplay, a reimagined story, and survival horror. PlayStation Store describes it as featuring “modernized gameplay, a reimagined storyline, and vividly detailed graphics.” The listed release date is March 24, 2023.
Silent Hill 2: psychological horror with modern third-person combat
Choose Silent Hill 2 if you want a psychological-horror focus rather than simply another action-oriented creature-survival premise. PlayStation describes its PS5 game as a remake of the 2001 title: James Sunderland searches for his late wife in the fogbound town, where he encounters monsters. The page also notes an over-the-shoulder viewpoint and updated combat. Its listed release date is October 8, 2024.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Dead Space: survival aboard a hostile spaceship
Dead Space changes the setting to science fiction. The US PlayStation Store listing identifies it as an Electronic Arts PS5 horror game and follows engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura, where the crew has been slaughtered and hostile creatures called Necromorphs threaten his survival. Its listed release date is January 27, 2023. This is a fit if you want a hostile-creature survival premise in a spaceship; the official description does not establish that it is harder, scarier, or more action-heavy than the other games here.
Alan Wake 2: supernatural investigation across two perspectives
Pick Alan Wake 2 if a murder mystery and supernatural story appeal more than a direct survival-horror substitute. The US PlayStation Store lists it for PS5 as a horror game and describes two playable leads: FBI agent Saga Anderson investigates ritual murders, while writer Alan Wake tries to escape a nightmare. Their stories unfold in separate but connected realities, and the listing frames light as both a weapon and a refuge.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
The Last of Us Part I: an adjacent infected-survival story
The Last of Us Part I is worth considering if you want survival and a character-led journey through a ravaged civilization. PlayStation describes Joel and Ellie encountering infected and hardened survivors, with exploration and combat as part of the experience. The PS5 version is described as rebuilt with updated gameplay, exploration, combat, and accessibility options. Its listed release date is September 2, 2022. It is an adjacent pick for survival storytelling, not a source-backed claim of a close Resident Evil gameplay match.
