Choose scrubs that meet your workplace’s rules, fit your measurements, and let you move comfortably through the tasks of a shift. Compare tops and pants separately: size, rise, inseam, coverage, pockets, fabric and care instructions all matter. A familiar size label—or a particular fabric blend—is not a reliable shortcut to the right choice.
Check your workplace’s rules first
Before comparing styles, confirm what your employer or clinical program permits. Requirements may specify color, logos or embroidery, coverage, layering, or styles allowed in a particular care setting. These are local rules, not universal scrub standards.
For example, East Tennessee State University College of Nursing’s clinical dress document specifies ceil blue scrubs for its students and addresses coverage during movement. South Africa’s National Nurses Uniform Policy applies within its defined scope to specified Department of Health employees. Neither document establishes a rule for nurses everywhere. When in doubt, ask your facility or program for its current written policy.

Record your chest or bust, waist, hip and inseam, then compare those measurements with the chart for the exact style you are considering. Size charts and cuts can differ between products, so a size that works in one scrub set may not work in another.

- Choose top and pant sizes independently. A matching set does not have to mean matching size labels.
- Check the rise and shoulder fit. The waistband should sit where you want it without rolling or sliding; the shoulders and arms should allow reaching without pulling.
- Check length options before sizing up or down. If the waist and hips fit but the pants are too long, look for petite, short, regular or tall lengths where offered. Compare inseam and try them with your work shoes.
If you have never bought scrubs before, start with the measurements and chart for the specific product—not the size you usually wear in another brand or type of clothing.
Test fit, coverage and comfort in motion
A set that looks right while standing still may shift or restrict movement on the job. Try it with the base layers and shoes you expect to wear, and with typical pocket contents if practical. Move through the motions that matter to your work:

- Sit and squat; check that the waistband stays in place and the fabric does not pull across the hips or thighs.
- Bend and reach forward; check that the top stays down and the neckline does not gape.
- Lift your arms and reach overhead; check for tightness across the shoulders or arms and for a top that rides up.
- Walk and move normally; check whether hems drag, ride up or interfere with your shoes.
Repeated adjustment, pulling or slipping is a practical sign that the cut, size or length is not working for you. Room for movement and layering can matter, but any layer or degree of coverage must also comply with your facility’s rules.
Match cut, fabric and pockets to your work
Compare the cut—such as slim, jogger or relaxed—by how it feels and functions on you, rather than assuming one style is best for every shift. A two-piece set lets you select top and pant sizes separately; other product formats, including jumpsuits, are distinct options rather than a universal ranking. Optional jackets and underscrub shirts can add layers only where permitted.

Read the garment’s published fibre composition and product-specific information about stretch or breathability. For example, Fabletics describes polyester-viscose-spandex construction for its own MotionTech™ styles; that product detail is not evidence that the blend is superior across scrub brands. ImageFIRST discusses poly/cotton blends in general guidance. Neither source supplies independent comparative tests showing that a particular blend is universally cooler, more comfortable or longer-lasting.
Judge pockets by whether they hold the items you actually carry and sit where you can reach them without disrupting movement. Also inspect closures and the waistband, and consider whether the garment works with your usual layers. Pocket count alone does not establish usefulness.

Check care instructions and visible construction
Read the care label before buying. Check washing temperature, permitted products, drying and ironing instructions against the laundry routine and written requirements at your facility. ImageFIRST recommends garments intended for frequent high-temperature washing, but that is a uniform-service provider’s guidance, not a universal instruction for every wearer. Follow your facility’s laundering and infection-control rules.
Look at stitching and how pockets are attached, along with closures and waistband construction. As you launder and wear the scrubs, watch for loose seams, fading, shrinkage, pilling, elastic failure or loss of shape. These checks can help you assess an individual garment’s condition, but available sources do not establish a reliable cross-brand durability ranking or a supported number of washes a set will last.

Compare two options on the same checklist
If you are deciding between specific sets, compare each against the same practical criteria rather than relying on a brand name, fabric label or size alone.
