For most Windows 11 home users, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is a sensible default. It is built into Windows, updates through the operating system, and combines real-time, behavior-based, heuristic, and cloud-delivered protection. Buy a third-party antivirus only when a specific, independently tested product solves a need Defender does not—such as a verified offline-protection advantage, multi-device administration, or a particular security service. A higher price alone is not evidence of better protection.

What Microsoft Defender includes

Microsoft Defender Antivirus is included with Windows 11. It is part of Windows Security rather than a separate download, so there is no additional antivirus license to activate for the PC itself. Its protection layers include real-time scanning, behavior monitoring, heuristic detection, and cloud-delivered intelligence.

Windows manages which antivirus provider is active. If you install and turn on another antivirus application, Defender Antivirus automatically turns off to avoid two real-time scanners competing for access to files and processes. If you uninstall the other application, Defender turns on again. You can see the active provider in Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, then open Manage providers when that link is available.

This automatic hand-off does not remove every Windows security feature. Windows Security can continue to expose firewall, account-protection, device-security, and app-and-browser controls even when a different antivirus is the active provider. The exact screens and options can vary by Windows 11 build and by the third-party product.

What recent independent tests actually show

Independent laboratory results are useful for comparing products, but each result belongs to a particular test period, product version, configuration, and definition of success. They are not a permanent ranking or a guarantee for an individual PC.

AV-TEST: full category scores in March–April 2026

In AV-TEST’s Windows 11 home-user comparison conducted with products available during March and April 2026 and default settings, Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 and Bitdefender Total Security each received 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. AV-TEST evaluates those categories separately, so a perfect score means the product met that test’s threshold in each category during that period.

AV-TEST also evaluated 16 home-user security products during January and February 2026. Its test platform used Windows 11 Pro, and the product versions and test conditions were fixed for that round. Results from a later build, a different operating system edition, or changed default settings can differ.

AV-Comparatives: an offline trade-off

AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 Malware Protection Test measured protection when the test system was offline. Microsoft Defender’s offline detection rate was 89.2%, while several other tested products reached 98.6%. AV-Comparatives explains that Defender relies heavily on cloud-assisted intelligence. When a PC is connected normally, cloud lookups can provide protection that an offline measurement does not capture; when connectivity is restricted or unavailable, local detection capability matters more.

In AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance test, Defender placed in the middle of the field and received an ADVANCED award. That indicates a measured performance impact in the tested workloads, not that every user will notice the same slowdown.

Real-world testing and its limits

AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test used a patched Windows 11 setup. It defined protection by whether the system became compromised. That is a practical measure, but no lab can reproduce every browser choice, downloaded file, account privilege, network condition, or software conflict found on a home PC. Use test results as evidence in a decision, not as a promise that a product will block every threat.

Decide whether your connection makes offline results important

For a normally connected home PC that receives Windows and Defender intelligence updates, cloud-assisted detection is usually available. The offline result becomes more relevant if you regularly work without internet access or deliberately restrict cloud communication.

Cases where offline capability deserves extra weight

  • A laptop is often used on flights, in remote locations, or in facilities with no network access.
  • A household uses a metered, filtered, or intermittently available connection.
  • Policy or privacy controls block cloud lookups for long periods.
  • You transfer files between isolated systems and scan them before reconnecting.

In these cases, compare a product’s published offline or disconnected behavior and independent malware-test results. Do not infer that a product with a higher offline score will automatically be better when connected; the two conditions measure different operating modes.

When a third-party antivirus is worth considering

Start with a concrete requirement. A paid subscription can be justified when its verified features or operating characteristics solve a problem you actually have.

Multi-device household management

If your household includes Windows PCs plus other supported devices, a plan that centrally manages several devices may be more convenient than configuring each installation separately. Check the exact device count, supported operating systems, account requirements, and whether mobile or macOS protection is included. “Protects multiple devices” is not a universal promise; limits differ by plan and region.

Specific controls for children or less technical users

Some products bundle parental controls, web filtering, activity reports, or centralized policy settings. These can be useful when a parent needs one dashboard for several accounts. Verify whether the controls work on the child’s operating system, whether local users can bypass them with administrator rights, and whether a separate account or app is required.

Identity-related or network services

Security suites may include identity-monitoring, password-management, secure-browsing, or VPN features. Treat each as a separate purchase decision. Check what data is monitored, which countries are covered, the service’s limits, and whether the feature is a short promotional add-on that renews at a different price. Do not pay for a bundle merely because it contains services you will not use.

Different management and support preferences

A third-party product may offer a management console, more granular notification controls, or support channels that fit your household or small office. Compare how easily you can pause scans, allow a known application, export an event log, and restore a quarantined file. Extra controls are valuable only if they are understandable and do not encourage unsafe exclusions.

When Defender is the better choice

Defender is often the better fit when you want a capable baseline with no separate subscription, use a current Windows 11 installation, keep cloud connectivity available, and do not need centralized controls or bundled services. It also avoids a common source of frustration: a paid antivirus trial that expires and then renews unless you cancel it.

Keeping Defender does not mean accepting default settings blindly. Review Windows Security notifications, leave real-time protection enabled, and investigate any warning rather than dismissing it repeatedly. If another antivirus is active, confirm that it is receiving updates and that Windows Security identifies it as the current provider.

Compare products on the dimensions that affect your PC

Decision area Questions to ask How to interpret the evidence
Protection How did the product perform in recent protection, malware, and real-world tests? Use results from matched periods and default settings. A score is time- and configuration-specific.
Cloud and offline operation Will the PC be disconnected or unable to use cloud lookups? Offline tests expose local-detection differences; connected performance can be different.
Performance Will scans or monitoring interfere with gaming, compiling, video editing, or older hardware? Look for independent performance testing and consider your own workload, not only a badge.
Usability Are alerts clear, false positives manageable, and exclusions easy to review? Usability scores and hands-on documentation matter as much as detection claims.
Coverage How many devices and which operating systems are included? Verify the plan’s device limit and platform list for your region.
Extras Do you need parental controls, identity services, a VPN, or a management portal? Confirm that the feature is included in the exact tier and works where you live.
Cost and renewal What is the first-term price, renewal price, billing frequency, and cancellation rule? Prices and terms change. Check the current vendor or retailer conditions before buying.

A practical selection process

  1. Describe the risk and routine. Note whether the PC is always connected, whether you install software outside major app stores, whether children use it, and whether you need protection on non-Windows devices.
  2. Confirm the baseline. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection. Check that real-time protection is on, security intelligence is current, and no action is pending.
  3. Check independent results for the same period. Prefer tests that identify the product version, Windows edition, default settings, and test dates. Record protection, performance, usability, and any offline result separately.
  4. List only features you will use. Write down required device counts, parental controls, management features, or offline behavior. Ignore bundle items that do not solve a stated need.
  5. Calculate the full term. Compare the introductory price with the renewal price, taxes, device limit, and cancellation process in your country. A lower first-year price can cost more over several renewals.
  6. Install one active antivirus. Before enabling a third-party product, save work and close applications. Let Windows deactivate Defender’s real-time provider automatically, then confirm the new provider appears in Windows Security.
  7. Recheck after installation. Run the product’s update, quick scan, and account or subscription check. Confirm that Windows Update, the firewall, and browser protections remain enabled.

How to switch safely

Moving from Defender to another antivirus

  1. Download the installer from the vendor’s genuine website or a trusted retailer, not from a pop-up advertisement or an unsolicited email.
  2. Read the installer screens for optional browser extensions, VPN trials, password managers, and automatic-renewal choices. Decline anything you do not want.
  3. Allow the installation to finish and restart Windows if requested.
  4. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and verify the third-party product is listed under the active provider.
  5. Open the product itself, update its signatures or security intelligence, and run an initial scan.

Returning to Defender

  1. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the third-party antivirus, choose the uninstall option, and complete its removal prompts.
  2. Restart if the uninstaller requests it. Some vendors provide a separate cleanup utility for damaged installations; use one only when the vendor documents it for that product.
  3. Open Windows Security and confirm that Defender Antivirus has turned on and that real-time protection is enabled.
  4. Run Windows Update, then check for the latest security intelligence update in Virus & threat protection.

Do not leave a PC without an active antivirus while switching. If the old product fails to uninstall and Defender does not reactivate, avoid browsing or downloading files until Windows Security shows an active provider.

Baseline protections that matter whichever antivirus you choose

Antivirus is one layer of a security routine. Microsoft recommends keeping Windows, applications, browsers, and antivirus software updated; downloading from trusted sources; and using built-in protections such as Smart App Control and Edge SmartScreen where available.

  • Update promptly: Install Windows and application security updates rather than postponing them indefinitely.
  • Use trusted sources: Obtain software from the developer, Microsoft Store, or a reputable distributor. Avoid “cracked” installers and unsolicited attachments.
  • Keep browser defenses enabled: SmartScreen and comparable browser warnings can block malicious sites and downloads before antivirus scanning is involved.
  • Use a standard account for daily work: Reserve administrator approval for tasks that genuinely require it.
  • Maintain backups: Keep at least one backup that ransomware cannot modify from the everyday account, and test restoring files.
  • Protect accounts: Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication for email, cloud storage, and financial services.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“Paid means automatically safer”

Price reflects licensing and features, not a guaranteed protection advantage. Correct the assumption by checking independent results for the relevant period and selecting paid features only when they meet a defined need.

Running two real-time antivirus products

Two active scanners can conflict, duplicate notifications, and reduce performance. Keep one real-time provider. You can use an on-demand scanner as a separate check only when its documentation says it is compatible and it does not replace the active provider.

Disabling cloud protection to reduce data use

Cloud-assisted intelligence is part of Defender’s design. Disabling it can reduce protection against newly observed threats. If data usage is the concern, review Windows metered-connection settings and update schedules rather than turning off protection without understanding the trade-off.

Trusting a single test badge

One laboratory result cannot represent every threat or device. Compare protection, offline behavior, performance, and usability across more than one relevant test period, and read the methodology.

Ignoring renewal terms

Promotional prices and introductory subscriptions may renew at a different rate. Record the renewal date, amount, and cancellation method when you purchase, and disable automatic renewal if you do not want it.

A decision guide by user type

User situation Reasonable starting point What could change the decision
One Windows 11 PC, reliable internet, routine browsing, no special controls Microsoft Defender with Windows and browser protections maintained A verified need for a specific extra service or different management experience
Several household devices and operating systems Compare multi-device plans with Defender’s Windows-only baseline Actual device limits, platform support, and long-term renewal cost
Frequent offline or restricted-connectivity work Give local and offline malware-test results extra weight How often the PC reconnects and receives cloud intelligence updates
Children or multiple less-technical users Compare products with verified centralized controls Whether controls support the operating systems and accounts in the household
Older or heavily used hardware Compare independent performance results and observe your own workloads Scan scheduling, exclusions, and the product’s measured impact

Bottom line

Microsoft Defender is a strong, practical default for many Windows 11 home users, and recent AV-TEST results show it matching a leading paid product with 6/6 scores for protection, performance, and usability in the March–April 2026 comparison. AV-Comparatives’ 89.2% offline detection result shows why connectivity and local capability deserve attention for disconnected PCs. Choose a third-party antivirus when its independently supported protection or a specific feature fits your situation, then verify the current plan, device limits, price, and renewal terms before committing.
