To change Microphone Mode on iPhone, open Control Center while using a supported call or recording, tap the active app’s controls, then choose a mode under Audio & Video. The choice applies only to that app and stays selected there until you change it. In supported apps, you can also set the mode before starting a call or recording.
Change Microphone Mode on iPhone
- Start or join a call, or open a supported recording app. Some supported apps also let you choose a mode before the call or recording begins.
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen.
- Tap the controls for the active app.
- Under Audio & Video, choose Standard, Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, or Automatic if that option is available in the current app and context.
Apple says the choice affects only the app being used for the call or recording; it does not act as a single, system-wide microphone setting. The selection persists for that app until changed. Apple’s Mic Mode instructions describe the available controls.
What each iPhone Mic Mode does
| Mode | What it does | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Uses standard voice processing. | You want the ordinary processing option. |
| Voice Isolation | Prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise. | You want the person on the other end to hear you clearly over surrounding sounds. |
| Wide Spectrum | Leaves ambient sounds unfiltered. | You want the other person to hear nearby activity as well as your voice, such as music or a group. |
| Automatic | Chooses a mode automatically. Apple’s example is Voice Isolation for calls using the receiver and Standard for calls using speakerphone. | You want the phone to select a mode based on the call setup. |
For FaceTime, Apple likewise describes Voice Isolation as filtering background sound, Wide Spectrum as including surrounding sounds, and Automatic as adjusting audio. Muting your microphone is a separate in-call control; it is not a Mic Mode. Apple’s FaceTime audio settings guide covers those controls.
Which modes are available by iOS version and activity?
Availability depends on the iPhone model, iOS version, app, and whether you are in a call or recording. Apple’s support guide lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later for Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum, while noting that supported apps and contexts still determine which controls appear.

- FaceTime and certain third-party apps: Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum require iOS 15 or later.
- Phone calls: Voice Isolation requires iOS 16.4 or later. Wide Spectrum is not available for phone calls.
- Automatic: requires iOS 18 or later.
- Audio or video recording apps: Voice Isolation requires iOS 26 or later in Voice Memos and certain third-party recording apps.
These are Apple’s stated minimums; an app may not support every mode even when the iPhone and iOS meet the threshold. For current context-specific availability, see Apple’s Mic Mode compatibility and instructions.
Why a Mic Mode change may affect only one app
Mic Mode is app-specific by design. Choosing Voice Isolation for a FaceTime call, for example, does not automatically set it for a phone call or another calling app. Change the mode from Control Center while using the app where you want it, and verify that app’s selection separately.

If a mode is missing, first check whether the active activity is a phone call, FaceTime or another supported call, or a recording. Then check the iOS minimum for that mode and whether the app supports it. Do not look for a global microphone switch: the app-specific persistence described by Apple means there is no one selection that necessarily carries across every app.

Audio input selection and Local Capture are separate
In supported apps and websites, Control Center can also let you choose an audio input. That is distinct from Mic Mode: input selection chooses the microphone source, while Mic Mode changes how audio is processed. Apple’s iPhone guide to recording video calls also states that Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum do not apply to a Local Capture recording; the recording can instead be edited afterward.

Mic Mode is a software setting, so you do not need to buy a microphone accessory to use it. Apple notes that with iOS 26.1, input gain can be adjusted on supported wired microphones and devices, including EarPods with USB-C; that is an input-level feature, not another Mic Mode.
