Start with your keyboard’s exact model—not a switch color or the phrase “hot-swappable.” Hot-swap means switches can be changed without soldering, but it does not mean every switch will fit. Verify the board’s supported switch format and socket, then match keycaps to both the switch stem and your keyboard’s layout.
Check switch compatibility before choosing a feel
Find the exact model name and revision of your keyboard, then use its manufacturer’s compatibility information. Check the switch’s physical format and technology, plus the pin and socket support. Standard-height MX-style, low-profile, optical, magnetic, and proprietary switches are not interchangeable by default; a board’s documentation must confirm support.
For example, Keychron says the K12 Pro’s hot-swap sockets work with almost all 3-pin and 5-pin MX-style mechanical switches. That statement applies to that model, not to hot-swap keyboards generally. See Keychron’s keycap and compatibility guide and verify the guidance for your own board.

Pin count is a physical mounting and PCB compatibility question. It does not tell you whether a switch is linear, tactile, or clicky. Gateron’s guide likewise treats socket compatibility and switch feel as separate considerations; check the board maker’s specifications for both before buying.

- Clear LED-Friendly Design: Transparent switch housing and clear keycap tops enhance RGB backlighting beautifully. These backlit-compatible keyboard parts allow vibrant light to shine through for a distinctive look
Do not assume a 5-pin switch will fit a board that only supports 3-pin switches, or that a switch with the right pin count will work if its technology or profile is unsupported. Follow the keyboard maker’s instructions rather than relying on a color name or a generic “hot-swap” label.
Choose linear, tactile, or clicky feedback
Once fit is confirmed, choose the kind of press you prefer. These are feel categories, not a quality ranking:

- Premium Materials: These clicky switches utilize a high-quality POM stem and a robust copper alloy spring. This premium material combination ensures consistent and satisfying keystrokes over an impressive lifespan of enough clicks
- Linear: moves smoothly without a noticeable tactile bump.
- Tactile: has a noticeable bump during the press, without the distinct click mechanism and sound of a clicky switch.
- Clicky: combines tactile feedback with an audible click. Consider whether that sound will work in a shared room or workplace.
Compare the specific switch model’s force or weight and travel figures when its manufacturer publishes them. Switch colors are not a reliable cross-brand standard, so use the model’s stated characteristics rather than assuming a color means the same thing across brands. A tester can help you compare presses, but the sound it makes is not a guarantee of how the switch will sound in your finished keyboard.
Why a switch’s sound may change in your keyboard
Switch type alone cannot promise a particular sound. Keycaps and their profile, the case, layout, mounting, desk and room all affect what you hear; recording setup can also change sound in demonstrations. Kinetic Labs discusses these variables in its guide to linear, tactile, and clicky switches. Treat sound clips as examples, not predictions for your own setup.

Make sure the keycaps match stem and layout
Keycap fit has two separate checks: the cap must attach to the switch, and the set must contain the sizes and arrangement your keyboard needs.
Match the switch stem
Many standard MX-style switches use a cross-shaped stem on top, which the keycap clips onto. Confirm that both the switch and caps are described as MX-compatible. “MX-compatible” describes the stem fit; it does not guarantee that the set includes the right keys for your board.
Rank #4
- Feeling:The segmented feeling is extremely distinctive, the keystrokes are crisp and clear, and the typing rhythm is strong, bringing an immersive typing experience.
- Sound: “Clicky” sound is crisp and recognizable, each key seems to play an exclusive note.
- Pressure:Trigger pressure of 50gf,strong key feedback, effectively reducing false touches and guaranteeing efficient input.
- Lifespan: Rugged internal structure, can withstand about 50 million keystrokes, durable, with dustproof and waterproof effect.
- Packaging:The exquisite PVC plastic box effectively prevents the switch from all kinds of damages.
Match the layout and key sizes
Check whether your keyboard uses ANSI or ISO, then compare its size and modifier row with the keyset’s included-key diagram. Pay particular attention to the spacebar and modifier keys: compact, ergonomic, or otherwise nonstandard layouts may need sizes that a typical kit does not include. Keychron’s guide explains the distinction between ANSI and ISO and recommends checking the set’s coverage.

Choose profile, material, and legends for your preferences
Profile describes a keycap’s height and shape. Material and legend style affect the appearance and typing surface; they are preference choices, not substitutes for fit checks. If backlighting matters, confirm that the legend construction and positioning suit your needs. Check the keyboard maker’s advice about clearance and any north- or south-facing LED constraints for your specific board. There is no universally best profile or shine-through design established for every keyboard.

- Peak Silence Meets Effortless Smoothness: Are you tired of the annoying "clacky" sound from mechanical keyboards while typing? Looking for a factory-lubed, plug-and-play silent switch that lets you immerse yourself in a whisper-quiet typing experience? What’s more, the EPOMAKER Silent Switch is equipped with top-tier shock absorption technology, which effectively eliminates key noise. Whether you’re working late at night or in a shared office space, you can still maintain full focus without disturbing others. Its pre-lubrication process ensures every keystroke is silky-smooth and seamless, remaining stable and reliable even with long-term use.
- Factory Lubed, Worry-Free Performance: Pre-lubed at the factory and engineered with a specialized structure, the Epomaker Silent Switch self-lubricates with every keystroke. Its self-lubing mechanism relies on precision-machined grooves in the stem: with each press, these grooves evenly distribute the factory-applied lubricant across all moving components—removing the hassle of frequent re-lubrication entirely. Crafted from high-grade POM, the stem delivers exceptional wear resistance, maintaining its shape and ultra-smooth feel even after 50+ million keystrokes.
- MX-Compatible & Hot-Swappable: The EPOMAKER Silent Switch features a standard 5-pin design, which strengthens the connection stability between the switch and PCB through multi-pin positioning. This effectively reduces wobble and minimizes the risk of poor contact during long-term use or frequent plug-and-unplug cycles, while being compatible with the vast majority of hot-swappable mechanical keyboards on the market. Its stem adopts the classic MX structure design, allowing perfect compatibility with various MX cross-stem structure keycaps, enabling users to easily enjoy the personalized fun of DIY keyboards.
- Built-in LED Slot & Durable Lifespan: Equipped with LED slots for modification, the backlight can be shine-through even with PBT housings in the Epomaker silent switches. This provides more fun feature and options for DIYers. With a strong stainless steel spring, the lifespan can go up to 60 million times of keystrokes based on laboratory durability test. Get your keyboard something new and have fun with them!
- Compatibility Reminder: The EPOMAKER Silent mechanical switch is compatible with most mechanical keyboards available on the market. However, it is incompatible with low-profile mechanical keyboards, optical mechanical keyboards, and magnetic mechanical keyboards.
Plan the change and use the right removal tools
Decide whether you are replacing all switches or only selected keys, then buy a matching quantity of switches and keep spares if useful. Before ordering caps, compare the keyset diagram with the board layout rather than relying on the set’s product name alone.
A keycap or switch puller can make removal easier. CHERRY lists a keycap/switch removal tool for its KW 300 MX; that is a model-specific example, not evidence that every hot-swap keyboard includes one or requires the same tool. Follow your keyboard maker’s removal and installation instructions to avoid damaging components.
