Measure the usable opening of the exact IKEA compartment—not the unit’s outside dimensions—and compare it with your Xbox in the orientation you plan to use. The Series X is much taller upright; the Series S is flatter. For either console, allow room for cables and leave extra space around it for airflow. Xbox does not specify a universal cabinet-clearance number, so a close physical fit alone is not enough to establish that an enclosed shelf is suitable.
Start with your Xbox’s dimensions and orientation
Xbox Wire lists these console dimensions and says both models can be placed horizontally or vertically. The measurements below are the console’s dimensions; they do not include extra room for airflow or cable connections.

Xbox’s setup guidance is to measure the space and leave extra room for airflow. It does not give a minimum gap for a cabinet or shelf. Check the vents on your console and avoid placing it where an opening is blocked by a wall, door, shelf edge, or other object.

Measure the usable compartment, not the furniture exterior
Measure the clear width, depth, and height inside the assembled bay you intend to use. Account for internal dividers, back panels, hinges, doors, trim, and any other feature that reduces the actual opening. Then check the console dimensions in your chosen orientation, plus the room needed for its power and HDMI plugs and cable bends.

- Choose an orientation. Decide whether the console will stand or lie flat before comparing dimensions.
- Measure the opening. Record the clear interior width, depth, and height of the exact compartment after assembly.
- Plan the cable route. Include the space occupied by connected plugs and the path cables take to the back or side of the unit.
- Check airflow and access. Make sure vents are not obstructed and that you can reach the console’s controls and ports. A door or back panel can affect clearance and ventilation.
- Confirm the exact IKEA configuration. IKEA combinations and dimensions can vary by model and market; use the measurements for the specific product and setup you are buying.
Xbox Wire noted that a shelf as shallow as 8 inches can accommodate the Series S with its power and HDMI cables. That is a design-context observation about cable fit, not a general ventilation rule, and it does not establish a suitable depth for the Series X. Do not use it as a substitute for checking your own cable layout and airflow.
How to assess IKEA BESTÅ
A US IKEA BESTÅ TV-unit listing gives overall dimensions of 70 7/8 × 15 3/4 × 15 inches and describes rear cord outlets. Those are the dimensions of the whole unit, not the clear interior measurements of each bay. Measure the specific compartment you plan to use, including any door or back-panel constraints. The cord outlets help with routing, but the listing does not establish that a console inside a closed compartment will have adequate ventilation.

How to assess IKEA KALLAX
IKEA describes KALLAX as a flexible cube-storage system, making an open cube a possible place to position a console. Whether it works depends on the exact assembled model and opening: measure the usable cubby rather than assuming every KALLAX configuration has the same interior dimensions. Keep the console’s vents and cables clear, and check that the chosen orientation leaves practical access to ports and controls.

Use the same checks for other cube shelves
If you are comparing IKEA with a third-party option such as a cube storage shelf, apply the same measurements rather than relying on the product category or exterior size. Internal openings, back panels, and cable routes vary by model and configuration; none of those details alone proves that a console will have enough airflow.
