Choose foundry protection for the robot’s actual exposure and configuration—not by a temperature label alone. First identify whether the hazard is radiant heat, sparks, hot particles, molten-metal splash, direct contact, or a combination; then match the cover or OEM configuration to the robot model, installed equipment, movement path, and maintenance needs.
Start by defining the foundry exposure
“Heat” is not one interchangeable hazard. Radiant heat from a furnace differs from contact with a hot workpiece, impact from sparks or scale, and molten-metal splash. Foundry robots may also face dust, lubricant, moisture, steam, and cleaning processes. These exposures call for different materials and construction; a reflective outer surface alone does not establish resistance to direct hot-metal contact.
Document the process before asking for a recommendation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Where the heat and other contaminants originate, and the robot’s distance and orientation relative to them.
- Whether exposure is continuous or intermittent, including its duration during a cycle.
- Whether the robot can touch hot workpieces or receive sparks, scale, or metal splash.
- Whether dust, lubricant, moisture, or steam washing is present.
- The robot’s cycle and trajectory through the exposure area.
Ask the cover supplier to assess those conditions, rather than selecting a product from a generic temperature claim. EVOTEC distinguishes radiant heat from hot solid particles and sparks in its robot covers for radiant heat protection information. ASP likewise describes thermal protection in terms that depend on exposure time in its foundry protection information.

Match the material claim to the specific hazard
A supplier’s fabric temperature, fire rating, or resistance statement applies to the described material and conditions; it is not automatically a rating for a complete robot cover in every foundry application. Request the technical sheet for the proposed material and construction, the relevant test method, and the exposure conditions behind each claim.
For example, ASP states that its thermal protection for robots in forge production can be highly resistant to 200°C to 600°C depending on exposure time. Separately, it says foundry fabric temperature resistance can range from 400°C to 1600°C and describes an M1 fire rating as required in those situations. These are distinct supplier statements, not a single universal operating range or proof that any cover will withstand direct molten-metal contact. Ask ASP or the selected supplier to clarify which claim applies to the actual material and exposure.

EVOTEC describes non-flammable fabrics and often a reflective coating, with thread and connection choices based on the fabric and process. A reflective layer is intended to reflect part of radiant heat; it does not, by itself, establish protection against hot-metal contact or splash. Confirm that the supplier’s evidence addresses the hazard you identified, not just a related one.

Specify the robot, its movement, and what must stay protected
A cover has to fit the installed robot and work through its full motion without blocking movement or leaving vulnerable areas exposed. Give the supplier the robot make and exact model, tooling and mounted equipment, trajectory or motion envelope, position of the heat source, and service-access requirements.

Ask how the proposed design protects the base, wrist, joints, and cabling. Seams, joints, openings, and connections can affect both coverage and contaminant ingress. ASP says its covers are custom-made for fitted equipment and trajectories. EVOTEC describes selecting connection methods for the process and says rotary rings can improve movement freedom while protecting the robot base in some applications. Request confirmation for the specific configuration rather than assuming a cover designed for the bare robot will also fit the installed setup.
Compare an external cover with OEM foundry protection
An external custom cover is not the only option. Foundry-configured robots may incorporate sealing, coatings, cable protection, or protected wrists. Compare these alternatives against the same hazards and service requirements, and verify exact model compatibility and current specifications with the robot maker.

| Option | What the source describes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Custom external cover | ASP describes custom foundry and pressure die-casting covers, with optional ventilation. EVOTEC describes process-specific fabrics and connection choices. | Material and construction evidence for the actual exposure; fit on the configured robot; movement, cleaning, inspection, repair, and replacement arrangements. |
| ABB Foundry Plus 2 | ABB’s brochure describes improved sealing, corrosion-resistant coating, additional cable and electronics protection, optional cable guards, IP67 compliance, and resistance to high-pressure steam washing. | The brochure is dated November 2011. Confirm current availability, model compatibility, and specifications with ABB before relying on them. |
| KUKA foundry configurations | KUKA describes heat- and corrosion-resistant coating, an IP67 foundry wrist, sealing air, Viton seals, and special covers for harsh conditions. | These are product-family statements; check the exact robot model, application, and current technical specifications with KUKA. |
OEM features and an external cover are not necessarily substitutes for each other; the appropriate comparison depends on the process hazards and the protection included in the exact robot configuration. ABB’s Foundry Plus 2 brochure is historical, so its claims should not be treated as confirmation of current product availability. KUKA’s KR QUANTEC Foundry information describes its foundry-family features.

Plan cleaning, inspection, repair, and cooling
Protection needs to remain serviceable after installation. Before choosing a design, ask how it can be inspected, removed, cleaned, repaired, and replaced, and whether routine service can be done without unacceptable production interruption. ASP describes reinforced, repairable seams. ABB describes steam washing for Foundry Plus 2; verify that the selected robot configuration and the actual cleaning method are covered by current specifications.

- 🔧 Pro Cutting Tip: Use a hot knife to cut the braided sleeving – this prevents fraying. If a hot knife is not available, seal the cut ends with a heat source (e.g., a lighter flame) to melt the edges. Use heat shrink tubing on both ends to prevent unraveling – works much better.
Consider ventilation only if measurements and the robot maker’s operating limits indicate an internal-temperature problem. ASP describes ventilation as an option but does not provide a universal sizing rule. Ask both the cover supplier and robot OEM whether ventilation or conditioned air is suitable for the measured conditions; do not assume that adding airflow is always necessary or appropriate.
Use a supplier checklist before approving a design
- Does the proposed protection address each actual hazard—radiant heat, contact, sparks, particles, splash, dust, moisture, or steam—as applicable?
- What exact material and construction are proposed, and what test method and exposure conditions support each claim?
- Does the cover fit the robot model, tooling, cables, trajectory, base, wrist, joints, and service points?
- Will seams, openings, or connections permit contaminant ingress or restrict the robot’s movement?
- How will the cover be cleaned, inspected, repaired, and replaced?
- Do measured internal temperatures and the robot’s operating limits indicate a need to discuss ventilation?
- For OEM foundry options, are the features available and approved for this exact model and application?
Supplier and OEM descriptions are not independent comparative tests proving one fabric or product is superior. No universal temperature rating can be selected without the site’s exposure profile and the robot’s limits. Base approval on current product documentation for the actual exposure and configuration.
