Choose a French manicure base by considering both your skin’s depth and its warm, cool, or neutral impression; then decide how sheer or opaque you want it. Pink and soft-peach nudes are useful starting points for fair skin, while caramel, beige, mocha, and richer brown families offer options across olive, medium, tan, and deep complexions. These are suggestions, not rules: the best base is one you like on your own nails and that works with the white tip.
Start with skin depth, then consider undertone
Skin depth and undertone are separate cues. A broad category such as fair, olive, medium, or deep does not tell you exactly which base color you will prefer. Use complexion-led shade suggestions to narrow the choices, then consider whether pink, peach, beige, or brown tones look harmonious to you.

Choose the finish for the effect you want
Finish changes how the base reads. A sheer polish lets more of the natural nail show through and can give a subtle glow; a cream finish looks cleaner and more opaque. A milky pink or white can soften the contrast and blur the base for a gentler French look. - Sheer: Consider it if you want a translucent, natural-looking base.
- Milky: Consider it for a softened, less sharply defined base.

Coordinate the base with the white tip
Think of the base and tip as a pair. A practical approach is to compare their warmth: a warmer nude may sit comfortably with a warmer-looking white, while a cooler pink may create a different, cooler impression. This is a styling choice, not a fixed color rule. Compare a few candidates before settling on one
- Pick a complexion-led shortlist. Start with one or two color families from the table, while keeping your own warm, cool, or neutral preference in mind.
- Choose a finish. Decide whether you want the base to look sheer, milky, or more opaque.
- Compare the base with the intended tip. Check the colors together rather than judging the base alone.
- Preview it on a nail if possible. A sample coat on your own nail is more informative than the bottle alone, particularly when a polish is sheer or the salon’s lighting differs from your usual environment.
This is a practical selection method, not a formally tested protocol. If a recommended shade looks washed out, too pink, too brown, or simply unlike the effect you want, try a neighboring color family or a different finish.
