Choose a fund based on its investment mandate, risks, costs and dealing terms—not simply because it is available through a GIFT City account. First confirm that you and the specific product are eligible; then compare the product documents and check how your tax residence affects tax and reporting. An account is an access route, not a fund recommendation.

Start by separating account access from fund eligibility

IFSCA’s NRI investor guidance describes a route involving an IFSC bank account, onboarding with an IFSCA-licensed broker and choosing from products such as ETFs and funds. It is a general description, not a guarantee that every investor, broker or product is available to you. Confirm the current requirements with the regulated institution and check the specific product’s offer documents.

Ask the bank or broker to confirm your investor category, residence-related restrictions, required account and onboarding documents, funding route, minimum investment and the products you can actually access. Treat the product’s current offer document and provider disclosures as the source for its terms; do not infer eligibility or dealing rights from a platform listing alone.

Identify what the product invests in

Read the fund’s mandate and benchmark before comparing performance or costs. Establish whether its exposure is to Indian, IFSC or foreign assets, and whether it tracks an index or follows another stated strategy. IFSCA’s Fund Management Regulations provide for ETFs in several categories, including equity-index, debt-index, commodity, hybrid and actively managed ETFs. The regulations also allow an equity-index ETF to replicate an index of IFSC, India or a foreign jurisdiction. These are permitted structures, not confirmation that a particular fund is launched, open to you or suitable for your goal.

Do not treat “ETF” or “mutual fund” as a diversification label. Check the actual holdings, countries, sectors and issuer concentrations in the product disclosures. A fund can hold a narrow segment of a market even if its name sounds broad.

Compare the product terms side by side

Use the current scheme documents and provider disclosures to fill in this comparison for each eligible candidate. If a term is not disclosed, ask the provider rather than assuming it is standard.

What to compare ETF Fund or scheme
Mandate and benchmark Check the holdings or index tracked, and confirm that the exposure matches your objective. Check the stated strategy, holdings and benchmark, if applicable.
Trading or dealing Under IFSCA’s ETF provisions, ETFs are mandatorily listed and traded on a recognised stock exchange. Check the specific listing, trading access, market hours and order arrangements. Check dealing frequency, cut-off rules, settlement timing, redemption terms and any lock-up or exit charge in the scheme documents.
Liquidity Review trading volume and the bid–ask spread. An exchange listing alone does not establish that trading will be liquid. Review redemption terms and any limits or conditions stated in the documents; do not assume daily dealing.
Costs Check recurring fund expenses and any brokerage, platform, custody, foreign-exchange, transfer or transaction charges. Check recurring scheme expenses and any platform, custody, foreign-exchange, transfer, transaction or exit charges.
Currency Confirm the unit’s subscription and sale currency as well as the currencies of the underlying assets. Confirm the subscription and redemption currencies and the currencies of the underlying assets.

The IFSCA materials do not establish comparable current fees, minimum investments, dealing terms or liquidity for a complete shortlist of funds. Obtain those figures from each candidate’s current documents and provider before deciding; do not compare funds using an assumed or outdated charge.

Account for currency and total cost

Look beyond the quoted unit price. Currency conversion can affect your result even if the fund’s unit price rises: the currency used to buy or sell units may differ from the currencies of the underlying assets. Confirm which conversion steps apply to your account and what charges the bank, broker or other providers disclose.

Compare recurring fund expenses alongside account-level and transaction charges. A low stated fund expense does not by itself establish the lowest all-in cost if dealing, custody, platform, transfer or foreign-exchange charges also apply. The available IFSCA materials do not provide a current, comparable amount for these costs across products.

Check whether your investor route applies to this product

An IFSCA circular dated May 2, 2024 discusses routes for NRI, OCI and resident individuals to participate in certain IFSC-based foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) investing in Indian securities. It describes an alternative route under which those investors may contribute up to 100% of an IFSC-based FPI corpus, subject to conditions including independent investment decisions by the fund manager and pooled investor rights.

That provision concerns a specified participation route for certain FPIs; it does not mean that every Indian resident can buy every GIFT IFSC fund. Confirm that the route has been implemented for the product you are considering, that you qualify under its conditions and that the specific offering accepts your investor category.

Assess tax and reporting where you are tax-resident

Do not interpret a general statement about GIFT IFSC tax advantages as a personal tax conclusion. IFSCA’s NRI guidance advises investors to consult a tax adviser about their circumstances, particularly where they live in a country that taxes global income. Your outcome may depend on the fund-level rules and the tax and reporting requirements applicable where you are tax-resident. Obtain advice for the relevant jurisdictions before investing.

IFSCA’s January–March 2025 bulletin says the Finance Act 2025 allowed tax-neutral relocation to retail funds or ETFs in IFSC under sections 47(viiac) and 47(viiad). This concerns qualifying relocations under specified provisions; it is not evidence that every purchase, redemption, distribution or gain from an IFSC fund is tax-free for an individual.

Use this decision sequence before investing

  1. Confirm access: Ask the IFSC bank or licensed broker whether your investor category and residence are eligible, and confirm the account, onboarding and funding requirements.
  2. Verify the product: Obtain its current offer document and disclosures. Confirm authorisation, eligibility, mandate, benchmark and whether the product is available to you now.
  3. Compare candidates: Record holdings and concentration, recurring expenses, other charges, dealing and redemption terms, liquidity and currencies using the table above.
  4. Check personal obligations: Establish how the investment is treated under the relevant Indian rules and the tax and reporting rules where you are tax-resident.
  5. Decide against your goal: Choose only if the documented exposure, costs, risks and access terms fit your needs. If a material term is missing, seek clarification rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

The IFSCA sources establish a regulatory orientation and permitted product structures, but they do not provide a live, fund-by-fund comparison or support a recommendation for a particular ETF or scheme. A suitable choice depends on the current terms of products you can access and your own circumstances.
