Choose checkout monitoring by matching the test to the failure you need to catch: endpoint and API checks flag service availability problems, while browser-based synthetic journeys test whether a shopper-facing checkout flow actually renders and progresses. For a useful picture, combine those checks with real-user monitoring and application diagnostics, then compare location coverage, alert rules, evidence, and maintenance effort.

What checkout monitoring can—and cannot—tell you

A successful HTTP response does not prove that a shopper can complete checkout. A URL ping can show that an endpoint is responding, but it may not detect broken page content, failed JavaScript, or an interaction that prevents checkout from advancing. New Relic’s documentation describes ping monitors as outage signals rather than proof that an application works: ping-monitor guidance.

Browser-based synthetic monitoring runs a designed journey using a browser, allowing checks to validate rendered elements and user-facing actions. It can test a path such as cart, checkout, payment action, and confirmation. These are scripted checks, not actual shopper sessions; they show whether the journey you designed works under the check’s conditions, not what every customer experienced.

API checks occupy a different layer. They can exercise service-level business transactions and dependencies without reproducing the entire browser experience. New Relic describes scripted API and browser monitors, while Datadog documents browser and API tests and simulated user flows. See New Relic Synthetics documentation and Datadog Synthetic Monitoring.

Compare tools on the capabilities that matter

What to compare What to verify Why it matters
Journey depth Does the tool offer endpoint checks, API tests, simple browser monitors, or scripted multi-step browser journeys? Endpoint checks are broad availability signals; browser journeys can test checkout interactions.
Browser realism Does the monitor execute page JavaScript and load assets, or only request a URL? A response from a URL alone may not expose a customer-facing failure. New Relic distinguishes simple ping monitors from browser monitors and scripted journeys in its Synthetics documentation.
Payment and dependencies Can you assert payment-related progress and check relevant third-party APIs? Payment is a critical checkout action; external dependencies can fail independently of your own site.
Geography and private access Can tests run in locations relevant to your customers and, where needed, inside private or allow-listed environments? Location affects what a check can reach and which regional problems it may expose.
Alert behavior What defines failure? How do retries, evaluation windows, and location scope affect notifications and status? Alert configuration changes when an incident is reported. New Relic documents a three-check failed-state behavior; Datadog documents evaluation behavior that depends on duration, frequency, retry settings, and location scope. Verify current product documentation before configuring alerts.
Diagnostic evidence Do results include screenshots, network timing, traces, logs, replay, or error context? Can results correlate with your telemetry? Evidence helps narrow a failure to a page, dependency, application error, or customer-session condition. Datadog describes screenshots and telemetry integrations; Sentry describes error context, replay, and tracing. These are vendor-described features, not comparative proof of diagnostic superiority.
Operating effort How much scripting, test upkeep, and telemetry integration will your team own? New Relic cautions that scripted browser monitors are slower and more resource-intensive than simpler checks. Datadog describes a hosted recorder and UI-change detection.
Cost and fit Can expected test frequency, monitor count, retention, and telemetry volume fit your budget? Comparable current prices are not established here. Get current pricing and forecast usage for your intended configuration.

Build coverage in layers

1. Map the checkout path and its dependencies

Write down the path from cart to confirmation, including the APIs and third-party payment services involved. Identify meaningful milestones a test can assert, such as the checkout page appearing or the next step loading. Keep sensitive data and live payment effects out of tests unless you and the payment provider have explicitly designed a safe production-check flow.

2. Start with endpoint and API checks

Use lightweight checks for broad availability and important service dependencies. Treat them as early warnings, not as evidence that the shopper-facing experience works. API checks can test service-layer transactions without requiring a browser to reproduce every visible interaction.

NETUM Bluetooth Barcode Scanner, Support 2.4G Wireless & Bluetooth & Wired Connect Smart Phone, Tablet, PC, CCD Bar Code Reader Work with Windows, Mac,Android (NT-1228BC)
  • Widely Compatible: Bluetooth Barcode Scanner for iPhone iPad Android Tablet PC, Support HID / SPP / BLE mode via bluetooth, Work with Windows XP/7/8/10, Mac OS, Windows Mobile, Android OS, iOS, Linux.
  • Strong Recognition Ability: With the 2500 pixels high-resolution CCD sensor Engine, Rapidly decodes all 1D and stacked barcodes (including ISBN book), even worn, damaged or tightly spaced codes. Scan 1D codes directly from paper or screen, such as a computer monitor, smartphone, or tablet, or scan through glass surfaces, plastic shrink wrap, a CCD scanner is likely the best way to go.
  • Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
  • 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
  • Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)

3. Add a small browser journey for critical steps

Choose the shortest revenue-critical path that can reveal a meaningful checkout failure. Assert expected content and successful progression rather than merely opening a page. Browser scripts can exercise JavaScript, assets, and interactions, but they are comparatively resource-intensive; avoid turning every minor page variation into a separate end-to-end script.

Datadog specifically recommends monitoring the payment action in an ecommerce checkout journey because a failed payment prevents journey completion. Its guidance does not establish a universally safe way to run a live payment against a real account. Design payment checks with the merchant’s and provider’s explicit safeguards in place. See Datadog Journey Monitoring guidance.

4. Run checks where they can represent your users and reach your systems

Select public monitoring locations that are relevant to your customer base, and confirm that private or allow-listed environments are reachable from the chosen locations. New Relic and Datadog describe public/global and private-location options in their materials: New Relic Synthetics, Datadog Synthetic Monitoring, and Datadog Journey Monitoring.

5. Pair synthetic checks with real-user and application data

When a synthetic check fails, use real-user monitoring, application errors, and traces to investigate whether customers were affected and where the failure originated. These are complementary signals: synthetic monitoring runs a planned test, while real-user data and diagnostics help describe actual sessions and application behavior. Sentry’s ecommerce materials discuss error tracking, third-party payment-script issues, session replay, and tracing as diagnostic capabilities; they do not establish Sentry as a direct substitute for synthetic monitoring. See Sentry’s ecommerce materials.

Where the named tools fit

The following are examples of documented capabilities, not a ranking or independent head-to-head test.

  • New Relic Synthetics: Its documentation describes scheduled public and private checks ranging from pings to scripted API and browser journeys. It notes that scripted browser checks can validate checkout but are slower and more resource-intensive. Documentation also states that monitor runs are stored for 13 months and that three checks run before a monitor enters a failed state; those details apply to New Relic’s documented behavior, not to monitoring products generally. See New Relic Synthetics and scripted browser monitor guidance.
  • Datadog Synthetic Monitoring and Journey Monitoring: Its product materials describe browser and API tests, simulated user flows, locations, screenshots, and integrations with APM and RUM. Its journey guidance calls out payment as a critical ecommerce-checkout action. See Datadog Synthetic Monitoring and Datadog Journey Monitoring.
  • Sentry: Its ecommerce materials describe application error tracking, third-party payment-script issues, session replay, and tracing for investigating checkout problems. That makes it a complementary diagnosis example, not an established replacement for synthetic checks. See Sentry’s ecommerce materials.

These descriptions reflect vendor materials, not independent comparative tests. No independent comparative price data, comparative failure-detection study, or measured conversion uplift is established here; do not treat promotional claims as proof of a quantified business outcome.
