Choose books in which girls do more than appear: look for characters who make decisions, lead, solve problems and shape what happens. Then assess the words and illustrations, the story’s appeal and age fit, and the balance across the child’s whole reading list. No single book has to meet every criterion; the goal is a varied, engaging collection.
What to look for in an individual book
Agency and influence on the story
Notice what the girl character actually does. Does she initiate action, make consequential choices, speak up, lead or solve a problem? Does her involvement help shape the outcome, or is she mainly a bystander, a visual presence or support for someone else?
The Anti-Defamation League’s checklist asks, “Are females as well as males depicted in leadership roles?” Its questions offer useful prompts for evaluating a book, rather than a pass-or-fail score: ADL’s children’s literature assessment checklist.
Roles beyond a single stereotype
Look for girls taking part in different kinds of activity, including work, care, creativity, adventure and leadership. A capable character need not be tough, exceptional or opposed to traditionally feminine interests. The important question is whether the story gives her believable choices and room to be a multidimensional person.

Words and pictures together
Read the text and examine the illustrations. A girl may be prominent in a picture but have little to say or do in the plot; another may matter deeply to the story even if she is not constantly at its center. Check whether pictures give girls varied, credible roles or repeatedly confine them to narrow appearances and activities. ADL likewise recommends considering illustrations as well as text and asks whether the images reinforce stereotypes.
Story quality and age fit
Representation is one part of choosing a book. Ask whether the plot is engaging and understandable for the intended reader, whether the characters and setting feel credible, and whether the conflict and resolution suit the child’s age and interests. A checklist should guide judgment, not replace it.

Why a varied shelf matters more than a perfect-book test
Review several books together. Across a reading list, look for variety in roles, settings, backgrounds, perspectives and ways of solving problems. One title may have a limitation yet still offer value in context; consider what it contributes alongside the rest of the collection rather than expecting every book to represent every possibility.

The University of Chicago’s Becker Friedman Institute summarized a study by Adukia and coauthors examining 1,130 books and more than 160,000 pages across 19 award categories and material published over approximately a century. In that sample, female characters averaged less than half of pictured characters. The brief also reports that, except in books selected to highlight females, female characters were more consistently visualized than mentioned in text. These findings are context for asking who is visible and who participates—not a rating of any particular title.

The authors caution that AI-based image analysis can involve bias and measurement error, and that character counts cannot show whether representation is stereotyped or reductive. Their work does not prescribe an ideal representation level or establish that a particular book produces a specific outcome for children. For each title, use these prompts to make a side-by-side judgment. They are questions, not a universal scoring system.

Use curated lists as a starting point
The Association for Library Service to Children’s Embracing Gender Identities book list is organized for children aged 0–5, elementary students and middle schoolers. It includes fiction, nonfiction and informational picture books that challenge gender norms and explore gender identity and expression. Use the age group as a discovery aid, then check each individual title for the child and your purpose.

An example of agency in a familiar story
ADL contrasts its description of Cinderella as passive, dependent and naïve with Robert Munsch’s The Paper Bag Princess, whose lead it characterizes as brave and independent. The comparison illustrates a question to ask—who acts and changes events—not a claim that one book alone represents the full range of roles, or that it suits every reader.
