Choose the platform that supports the games you actually plan to play, works with the hardware you own or want, and fits your friends and budget. There is no universal winner: check a shortlist of specific games—including edition, multiplayer, and save features—before buying a platform or a game.
Start with the games you want to play
Write down the games you expect to buy, then check each game’s store listing or official support information for availability on Steam, PlayStation, or Xbox. Confirm that the edition you want is available; a game’s presence on one platform does not establish that every edition or feature is available there.
For each multiplayer game, check whether it supports cross-play with the platforms your friends use. If you want to continue a save on another device, check for cross-save or cross-progression specifically. These features vary by title, so do not infer them from the platform alone.
- Is each must-play game available on your intended platform?
- Does the required edition include the content or features you want?
- Can you play with your friends, and does that exact game support cross-play?
- Can you carry progress between platforms if that matters to you?
Should you get a gaming PC or a console?
Steam means playing on a PC
Steam is a PC game storefront, so choosing it means having a PC that meets the requirements of the games you plan to play. Check the requirements for each game before purchasing or upgrading hardware rather than assuming one general PC specification will suit every title. PlayStation Studios sells some PC games through Steam, but that does not mean all PlayStation games are available there or that a PlayStation console purchase includes a PC copy.

Steam offers a limited refund window. Valve’s refund policy, last updated April 23, 2024, says you can request a refund for a game within two weeks of purchase if you have played for less than two hours, subject to conditions and exceptions. Valve may review requests outside those rules, but does not guarantee a refund. Check the live policy before relying on it.
PlayStation and Xbox mean choosing compatible console hardware
For a console, identify the exact model and whether it matches your needs. If you own physical discs or want to buy them, check that the console model has a disc drive; an all-digital model will not play physical discs. Also include any hardware purchase, storage needs, and game costs in your comparison.

For older Xbox games, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S fact sheet documents backward compatibility for existing Xbox One games and backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. It does not establish that every game from those generations works, so verify the exact title. The sheet dates to September 2020 and is useful for its stated compatibility scope and hardware distinction, not as a current buying guide.

Compare the full cost, including online play
Compare the game and hardware costs with any membership needed for the features you intend to use. Do not assume every online game requires a paid membership, or that one subscription covers every game and device you might use.

PlayStation Support states: “In order to play most PS4 and PS5 games in online multiplayer, you need to have a PlayStation Plus subscription.” That applies to most, not all, PS4 and PS5 games. PlayStation Plus has three plans with different benefits; catalog and streaming benefits depend on the plan. Check the current requirements and price for your region and the games you plan to play.
For Xbox, Microsoft describes Game Pass digital-goods access as account-based, with supported devices and device limits varying by plan. Check the current plan details for included games, supported devices, and simultaneous-use limits instead of assuming a subscription works the same way everywhere. Subscription catalogs and terms can change.

- Hardware you need to buy, including any PC upgrades or console model choice
- Each game’s current price and required edition
- Storage or other hardware upgrades you may need
- A membership fee, if the specific online features or services you want require one
Check what happens to your existing library and saves
Do not assume that a game bought on one platform grants a copy on another or that its save transfers. PlayStation’s PC Games FAQ says PlayStation Studios PC and console versions are separate products, and saves cannot currently transfer between PC and PS4 or PS5 versions. The FAQ also says a PSN account is not required for all PlayStation Studios PC games, though select titles require one. These are PlayStation Studios policies, not universal rules for every publisher.

The table is a checklist, not a ranking. A platform that fits your preferred play style is still a poor choice if it lacks a game you consider essential or does not let you play with your group.
