There is no universally best choice: select the model family by the task’s quality and diversity needs, training resources, inference speed, controllability, and the pretrained models available for your use case. For high-diversity conditional image generation, start by testing diffusion or latent diffusion if iterative sampling fits your latency budget. If latency is the main constraint, compare a GAN with an accelerated diffusion sampler on your target hardware. “Latent-space methods” is not a separate, mutually exclusive family: latent diffusion denoises a compressed representation, while GANs commonly take a latent code as input.
What distinguishes the three approaches?
Diffusion models
A diffusion model learns to reverse a gradual process that adds noise to data. To generate a sample, it starts with noise and repeatedly predicts a less noisy version. Repeated model evaluations can make sampling slower, though sampling methods and learned reverse-process variances can reduce the number of evaluations; the speed and quality tradeoff depends on the model and setting.
GANs
A generative adversarial network trains a generator against a discriminator. In a common setup, a latent input code is mapped to an output in one generator pass. That can make generation fast and gives users a code they can explore or manipulate. Those properties do not guarantee good results: evaluate output quality, training behavior, and how well the generator covers the target data. A cited diffusion-versus-GAN study discusses GAN training instability and distribution coverage, but it is not a universal comparison of every GAN design.
Latent diffusion and latent codes
Latent diffusion is still diffusion. A pretrained autoencoder encodes data into a compressed representation; a diffusion model denoises that representation, and the autoencoder’s decoder maps it back to an output. Doing the denoising in this lower-dimensional space can reduce the workload of high-resolution synthesis. The decoded result also depends on the autoencoder’s reconstruction characteristics, so assess whether they suit your task. By contrast, “latent code” in a GAN usually means the generator’s input representation. The shared word does not make these techniques equivalent.

How to choose for your workload
Choose diffusion when diversity or conditional generation matters
For conditional image generation or a need for varied outputs, test diffusion first if you can afford iterative sampling. Measure both fidelity and coverage: stronger classifier guidance can improve fidelity while reducing diversity. Do not treat a higher quality score as proof that the model represents the full range of relevant outputs.
Choose a GAN when inference latency is the bottleneck
If every millisecond matters, put a GAN and an accelerated diffusion sampler through the same deployment test. Measure on the intended device, at the intended image size and batch size. A generator’s common one-pass design can be attractive, but historical diffusion step counts do not predict the speed of a current implementation.

Consider latent diffusion for high-resolution workloads
If pixel-space compute or memory is limiting high-resolution generation, latent diffusion is a candidate because its denoising takes place in a compressed representation. Check the end-to-end memory and latency requirements as well as reconstruction and perceptual quality; compression is a design tradeoff, not a guarantee that a given model will fit or look right.
Be precise about what you need to edit
If your workflow depends on smoothly manipulating a generator’s code, determine whether a GAN-style input space is specifically required. A compressed latent representation used by a diffusion model is a different concept and does not, by itself, promise the same editing behavior.

Compare models on the same task, not just on a headline score
Make the comparison as controlled as possible. Use the same target data, output resolution, conditioning, sample count, and evaluation protocol. FID can help compare sample distributions in a defined benchmark, but it cannot establish performance for every downstream use. Add diversity or coverage measures and human or task-specific evaluation when those reflect what success means for your application.
- Quality and task success: Does the output meet the application’s visual or functional requirements?
- Diversity and coverage: Does the model produce useful variation and represent relevant parts of the target distribution?
- Training and resources: Can you train reliably with your data, compute, and memory budget, or is a suitable pretrained model available?
- Inference: What are latency and memory use on the actual deployment hardware?
- Control: Can users condition, explore, or edit outputs in the way the product requires?
- Privacy: What are the risks for your training data and deployment setup? A 2024 survey identifies training cost and privacy or memorization as material considerations, but risk depends on the data and evaluation setup.
What published image benchmarks do—and do not—show
In a 2021 ImageNet evaluation, guided diffusion reported FID scores of 2.97 at 128×128, 4.59 at 256×256, and 7.72 at 512×512. With classifier guidance plus upsampling, the same paper reported 3.94 at 256×256 and 3.85 at 512×512. These are results from that paper’s specific evaluation, not current universal rankings across model families or tasks. The authors also reported matching BigGAN-deep with as few as 25 forward passes per sample in their evaluated setting while maintaining better distribution coverage. Separately, a 2021 study of learned reverse-process variances reported sampling with an order of magnitude fewer forward passes and a negligible difference in sample quality in its experiments. These findings show that diffusion sampling can be accelerated; they do not remove the need to benchmark your own model and workload.
