Choose the assistant that handles your recurring tasks well, fits the apps and files you already use, and meets your privacy and budget requirements. There is no established universal winner: test the same tasks with the same materials, and compare the exact account type and plan you would use.

What should you compare before choosing an AI assistant?

Start with your own work rather than a general ranking. A service can be useful for one job and a poor fit for another, and a feature listing does not establish how well that feature performs or whether a usage limit will interrupt you.

  1. Task fit: List a few real tasks, such as summarizing a document, drafting, coding, or researching a question. Try each assistant with the same prompt and source material, then judge correctness and usefulness.
  2. Workflow fit: Check whether the assistant works with your email, office suite, browser, files, or other tools. Confirm that the integration is available on your particular plan.
  3. Privacy and account context: Review controls for model improvement, retention, human review, memory, and uploaded files. Compare the terms for the account you will actually use; work and personal accounts may differ.
  4. Limits and value: Check current price, usage caps, context and file limits, and whether the features you need are included. Recheck pricing and plan details before buying because they change.
  5. Access and portability: Confirm availability in your region and consider whether saved chats, projects, or settings would make switching difficult.

This is a practical comparison method, not a capability ranking. The available figures below describe dated surveys or documented product policies, not controlled head-to-head tests.

How do ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot differ?

The clearest documented differences concern account controls, privacy, plans, and organizational integrations. They do not establish which service produces the best answer for your particular work.

Assistant Documented point to check What it does not establish
ChatGPT OpenAI says eligible personal accounts can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” for new conversations. Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary; OpenAI says they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. Content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Controls vary by plan, region, account, and workspace. These controls do not mean every ChatGPT account has identical settings or retention. They do not show which assistant is more accurate for a given task.
Gemini Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, dated June 29, 2026, describes different handling depending on Keep Activity. With it on, chats and shared material are saved and may be used to develop and improve services, including training, with human review of some data. Activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default; users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. With it off, future chats do not appear in Activity or train models unless feedback is sent; chats are retained for 72 hours for service response and safety. Previously human-reviewed chats may remain for up to three years, even after activity deletion. Turning Keep Activity off does not erase previously human-reviewed chats immediately. Settings and connected-app availability also matter.
Claude Anthropic’s live pricing page listed Free, Pro, Max, and organizational offers when checked for this article. At retrieval, Pro was $20 month-to-month or $200 billed annually; Max started at $100 a month. Listed paid features included Claude Code, research, projects, and various creation tools. Usage limits apply. These are a dated price and feature snapshot, not a guarantee of current terms or a comparison of output quality.
Microsoft Copilot Microsoft distinguishes Copilot Chat (Basic), Microsoft 365 Copilot (Basic), and Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium). The Premium organizational tier can automatically ground responses in organizational data through Microsoft Graph and Work IQ. Basic tiers require uploaded or open content or an agent for organizational context. Microsoft says Enterprise Data Protection applies to work or school sign-in with Entra accounts; protected Copilot Chat prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models or made available to OpenAI. These statements describe documented organizational experiences, not every personal Copilot app. Check your precise license and sign-in context.

For assistants not listed here, apply the same checks rather than assuming a familiar brand name guarantees particular integrations, privacy defaults, or limits.

Which assistant should you choose for your use case?

If you use organizational Microsoft data

First identify whether you have Copilot Chat (Basic), Microsoft 365 Copilot (Basic), or Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium), and whether you are signed in with an Entra work or school account. The documented Premium tier can automatically use organizational data through Microsoft Graph and Work IQ; the Basic tiers need uploaded or open content or an agent to provide organizational context. Do not assume those work protections or integrations apply to a personal Copilot experience.

If privacy controls are your deciding factor

Read the settings and privacy notice for the exact service and account you plan to use. Distinguish disabling model improvement from deletion, retention, and human review: they are not interchangeable. For Gemini Apps, Google’s June 29, 2026 notice warns: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” The notice concerns signed-in Gemini Apps and describes specific Keep Activity controls and reviewer-related exceptions.

If price or a paid feature matters most

Verify the current plan page and usage limits immediately before subscribing. Anthropic’s retrieved pricing snapshot is useful as a dated reference—Pro was $20 month-to-month or $200 billed annually, and Max started at $100 a month—but it should not be treated as a current promise. The information here does not provide a uniform, verified price comparison across all the named services.

If you switch among assistants for different tasks

That can be reasonable. In a 2026 working paper, Jennifer Zou reported a weighted survey of 1,999 US adult AI-assistant users fielded in June 2026: 58% named ChatGPT as their primary assistant, 25% named Gemini, and Claude was used for a third of coding tasks despite a 7% overall share. These are survey estimates of selection and task allocation—not performance scores or predictions of what will work best for you.

How can you test assistants fairly before committing?

  1. Choose representative tasks. Select a small set of tasks you actually repeat, such as summarizing a policy document, drafting an email, checking a coding problem, or answering a question from supplied sources.
  2. Use identical inputs. Give each assistant the same prompt and source materials. Keep requirements, constraints, and requested output format the same.
  3. Check the result against the sources. Look for factual errors, missing qualifications, unsupported claims, and how much editing the result needs. Do not treat confident wording as evidence of correctness.
  4. Test the intended workflow. Try the relevant files, connected apps, or work data on the specific plan and account you expect to use. A listed integration may not be available in every tier.
  5. Check practical limits. Review usage caps, context and file limits, and whether the features you rely on are included. Consider whether a cap would disrupt your regular work.
  6. Review account and switching implications. Inspect data controls and regional availability, and decide whether saved chats, projects, or settings are important enough to affect your choice.

What do user satisfaction scores tell you?

The American Customer Satisfaction Index’s 2026 AI survey reported scores of Gemini 76, Microsoft Copilot 74, Claude 73, and ChatGPT 73. Those are satisfaction scores, not rankings of accuracy, capability, or task performance. Treat them as a snapshot of respondent satisfaction rather than a substitute for testing your own tasks.
