Buy at launch when playing immediately matters to you, you already have good reason to expect the game will suit you, and you can accept the risk of problems that reviews or player reports may reveal. Wait when your decision depends on uncertain performance, stability, content, accessibility, online features, or whether the game fits your tastes. The right choice depends on what you value and what you still need to learn—not on a universal rule about pre-orders.
Decide what playing at launch is worth to you
Early access to a game can matter if you are eager to play, plan to join friends, or want to take part in a launch-period event. For a multiplayer game, that timing may also help you join an active community, but check whether the specific game and your friends’ plans make that benefit real.

Waiting gives you time to use reviews and player reports before spending. That can be more valuable when your choice depends on evidence about the game’s condition or content, rather than simply on whether its premise sounds appealing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse this launch-versus-wait checklist
- Buy at launch: You know the game fits your preferences, playing right away has meaningful personal value, and you can live with the possibility that early reports will uncover problems.
- Wait for evidence: You need to know more about performance, bugs, content depth, controls, accessibility, or online functionality before deciding.
- Consider the cost of being wrong: Account for the price, your budget, and how much a disappointing purchase would bother you.
- Check the purchase terms: Refund eligibility can change with the storefront, region, product, timing, and whether you download or play the game.
- Do not count on a future deal: Waiting may give you a chance to buy with more information or at a different price, but a discount or continued availability is not guaranteed.
Judge review evidence, not just scores or timing
Look for reviews that explain what the reviewer played and assessed, especially on the platform you intend to use. Useful coverage discusses the factors that matter to you—such as technical performance, stability, content, controls, accessibility, and online features—and gives enough context for you to compare the game with your own tastes. A score or review count alone cannot establish whether you will enjoy it.

If reviews are embargoed until shortly before or after release, treat the timing as context, not a quality verdict. The 2024 Big Games Machine Games Journalist Survey discusses how short lead times for review builds may pressure reviewers and contribute to reviews appearing after release. It does not establish that a late embargo predicts a game’s quality.
Be stricter with Early Access purchases
For an Early Access game, decide whether you would be satisfied with the game as it exists now, rather than buying mainly for a hoped-for future version. Steam Support’s guidance is direct: “If you aren’t excited to play the game in its current state, then hold off and wait until a future update or full release.” That is Steam’s advice for Early Access, not a rule that applies to every launch purchase. See Steam’s Early Access FAQ.

Check refund rules before you buy
A refund policy is not automatically a free trial. Read the live terms for your exact storefront, region, edition, and release timing; downloading, launching, or playing may affect eligibility. The following official pages describe different policies, not interchangeable guarantees:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Steam pre-orders: Steam says pre-orders may be refunded any time before release. After release, its standard refund policy applies; Advanced Access pre-purchases have a different cutoff. Check the Steam pre-order FAQ and current Steam refund policy for the transaction’s terms.
- PlayStation Store, United States: The US cancellation policy sets conditions for pre-order cancellation and downloaded or streamed content. Do not assume that opening or downloading a game counts as a trial.
- PlayStation Store, United Kingdom: The UK cancellation policy describes immediate digital delivery and how consent affects cancellation rights. It is a regional policy and should not be applied elsewhere.
- EA app or EA.com: EA’s refund policy describes eligibility criteria and makes purchase channel relevant. It includes a limited route for certain new games that cannot be played for technical reasons within EA’s control; it is not a general satisfaction guarantee.
- Steam in the EU and UK: Steam explains its voluntary refund policy and its interaction with statutory withdrawal rights in its EU/UK terms. Legal rights depend on jurisdiction and the circumstances of the purchase.
For any specific transaction, verify the current policy and the rules for pre-loading, Advanced Access, and the point when refund eligibility changes. Storefront policies can change, and meeting a published policy’s conditions does not guarantee every request will qualify.

Choose a physical copy only after choosing the game
Format is a separate decision from timing: a physical copy may suit you if you have already chosen a title and want that format. PlayStation’s July 1, 2026 PlayStation.Blog post says the company plans to discontinue production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles starting in January 2028. That statement concerns disc production for new PlayStation games; it does not say that physical games or retail sales will end in 2028. Check for updates if this future policy affects your decision.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
