Choose the horror game if you want to control the character and make decisions under pressure; choose the movie if you want a focused story shaped by a director’s framing, performances, and pacing. Other adaptations may retell the plot, expand the game’s world, or translate the feeling of play into a different medium. None of those formats is automatically scarier or better: the right choice depends on the experience you want.

What changes when you play instead of watch?

A film guides you through a sequence chosen by its creators. A game asks you to participate: you move, make choices, and encounter the horror through the character’s actions. ScreenHub describes this difference as guided, linear storytelling versus player agency and active participation. ScreenHub’s comparison of horror games and films also cautions that games are not necessarily scarier; the effect depends on creative choices and themes.

That distinction matters because agency changes your relationship to danger. A threat can feel personal when you are the one entering a room or deciding what to do. In a film, the director controls what you see and when, while actors, editing, sound, and pacing shape the tension. Neither approach guarantees a stronger scare: one makes you act within the horror, the other concentrates the creators’ control over how it unfolds.

Compare the experience you want

What matters to you A game may fit if… A film or other adaptation may fit if…
Agency You want to control movement, make decisions, and participate directly in the frightening situations. You would rather watch events unfold through a guided, linear story.
Story continuity You want the original interactive plot and character arc. You want a screen version that may carry over the plot, expand the world or lore, or tell a different story within the same setting.
Atmosphere and style You want the mood to emerge through your own exploration and actions. You want film or television to shape the experience through framing, performances, and pacing—or an adaptation to evoke the feeling of play in screen language.
Time and effort You are willing to spend time actively playing and making progress. You prefer a more guided viewing experience. This is a practical preference, not a measured claim that every film is shorter than every game.

“Faithful” is not the only way an adaptation can work

An adaptation does not have to reproduce every event of a game to preserve something valuable about it. The British Film Institute identifies several approaches: carry over the game’s story, add to its world or lore, or translate the sensations and rules of gameplay into screen language. Which approach suits you depends on whether you value plot continuity, new context, or a familiar atmosphere more. The BFI’s discussion of video-game adaptations uses examples across these approaches.

A retelling can preserve a story’s emotional center

The BFI describes HBO’s The Last of Us as following the game’s emotional arc and core survival-horror experience. Its account of the adaptation also notes that the series carries much of the game’s plot and central relationship into television. This is a useful choice when you want a screen version that remains close to the original story, even though watching is not the same as controlling the characters.

An expansion can add context instead of repeating the plot

Arcane, based on characters from League of Legends, is an example the BFI gives of an adaptation expanding a game’s lore. That kind of version can appeal if you want more of a setting or its characters, rather than a scene-by-scene retelling of a game’s events.

A screen version can aim to recreate the feeling of play

The BFI argues that Exit 8 translates its source game’s looping rules and claustrophobic feeling into a liminal screen experience. In discussing the appeal of playing Resident Evil, the BFI attributes this description to director Zach Cregger: “I have to go down this long dark passageway. I have two shotgun shells. I know there’s a lot of shit in there waiting for me, and it’s all really bad, but I have to go,” (BFI). The example captures why a creator might adapt not only a game’s events but also the pressure of moving through its world.

What Resident Evil shows about a franchise with several versions

Resident Evil is a survival-horror game franchise with a range of screen adaptations. The games and films do not all tell the same story or preserve the same elements; the BFI describes the franchise as a more complicated, expansive case than a single direct retelling. The BFI’s account of games at the movies discusses how different adaptation strategies shape what carries over.

Resident Evil Requiem Amazon Exclusive Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
  • Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
  • For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
  • An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
  • Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.

So, if you are choosing where to start, decide whether you want the source game’s interactive experience, a screen story that carries over a central plot or relationship, or another interpretation of the franchise. A film’s reception score is not a measure of how faithfully it adapts a game or how frightening it is; a ranking such as Rotten Tomatoes’ Resident Evil movie list concerns the reception of particular films, not which format is right for you.

A quick way to make your choice

  1. Start with the kind of involvement you want. Pick the game if you want to act within the horror; pick a film or series if you want the story presented to you.
  2. Decide what you want an adaptation to preserve. Look for continuity if you want the original plot, an expansion if you want more lore, or a translation of gameplay atmosphere if you want the experience to feel familiar in a new medium.
  3. Factor in your available attention. Choose the format that fits whether you want an interactive commitment or a guided viewing session; the actual time required varies by title.
  4. For a franchise such as Resident Evil, choose a specific story or experience. Do not assume every film is a direct adaptation of one game, or that the franchise has a single screen version that represents it.
