A phone’s 165Hz rating is a maximum refresh capability, not proof that its screen runs at 165Hz all the time. If you want smooth motion without committing to the highest refresh rate, adaptive refresh is a practical default. If you regularly play games that support high frame rates, a fixed 165Hz setting may be worth the battery trade-off—but the cost depends on the phone and how you use it.
What 165Hz means for phone use
Refresh rate describes how often a display can update its image. A 165Hz screen can refresh up to 165 times per second, but that number does not mean every app produces 165 frames per second or that the phone keeps the display at its maximum rate continuously. The app, phone hardware, software and display settings all affect what you actually see.
Some phones adapt refresh rate to the content or usage rather than holding it at the maximum. For example, ASUS lists the ROG Phone 8 Pro with a 165Hz AMOLED LTPO display and adaptive refresh support in an information sheet distributed by HKT/CSL; the sheet does not establish the phone’s real-world battery runtime. How much battery can fixed 165Hz use?
One same-phone comparison shows why the setting can matter. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery test of the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro, the phone lasted 20 hours 34 minutes with adaptive refresh and 15 hours 41 minutes with the display fixed at 165Hz. That is a difference of 4 hours 53 minutes in that test. That result is useful as a controlled comparison on one device, not as a universal estimate of how many hours 165Hz costs. Battery life varies with the phone, software, brightness, network conditions, workload and test procedure. The figure also does not predict your runtime under a different mix of gaming, video, scrolling and standby.

Choose based on how you use your phone
Choose adaptive refresh if battery time matters most
Adaptive refresh is the sensible starting point if you want the option of smooth motion but also care about making it through a long day away from a charger. It avoids assuming that the screen needs to stay at its maximum rate for every task. Check the phone’s display settings for the available refresh-rate choices; labels and controls vary by model.

Consider fixed 165Hz for supported games
A fixed high refresh rate is more compelling if you often play games that can take advantage of high frame rates and you value smoother motion more than maximum runtime. It does not make every game run at 165 frames per second: the title and phone must support the relevant frame rate. The battery result from Tom’s Guide’s ROG Phone 9 Pro test gives a concrete example of the possible trade-off on a gaming phone, but not a forecast for every player.

Do not decide from video playback claims alone
OnePlus lists the OnePlus 15 with a 6.78-inch LTPO 1.5K display that dynamically refreshes up to 165Hz, a 7,300mAh battery and up to 31 hours of video playback. Those are manufacturer specifications and a manufacturer playback claim, not an independent comparison between fixed and adaptive refresh. Check the relevant market configuration and test conditions before treating the playback figure as a likely result for your own use. OnePlus 15 specifications
Adaptive operation is not exclusive to 165Hz phones. Nothing says the Phone (4a) shifts its adaptive refresh rate from 30Hz to 120Hz to balance fluid motion and power saving; its product page does not provide a controlled battery comparison against a fixed refresh setting. Nothing Phone (4a)

How to compare phones and battery tests
When comparing models, look beyond the largest refresh-rate number. A useful comparison checks both how the display operates and how the phone performs in battery testing.

- Battery-test settings: Check whether an independent review tested the phone at default or adaptive refresh, and whether it also tested a fixed high-refresh setting. Do not compare results as though they used the same settings if they did not.
- Workload and method: A battery test is meaningful only in the context of what it measures. Gaming, video playback, scrolling, messaging and standby are different workloads; review procedures also differ.
- Battery capacity and charging: Capacity provides context, but it does not determine runtime by itself. Charging convenience can also affect how important maximum endurance is to you.
- Your priorities: Decide whether the smoother experience in your supported games and everyday interactions is worth potentially spending more time near a charger.
For a gaming-focused example, the ASUS ROG Phone 9 Pro is useful because Tom’s Guide reports results for both adaptive refresh and fixed 165Hz on the same device. Treat those figures as that review’s test outcome, rather than as a guarantee for other phones.
