Use the Apple Watch app on your iPhone to decide which alerts interrupt you, and Health settings to decide which apps can read or add health information. For more privacy on your wrist, turn on tap-to-reveal notifications; for tighter data control, review Health permissions, data sources, and iCloud syncing separately.
Choose which Apple Watch notifications interrupt you
For a personally configured watch, notifications generally mirror the iPhone’s settings by default, but many apps let you choose different behavior for the watch. Current menu labels may vary by software version.
-
On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > Notifications.

If offered, set notification grouping to Off, Automatic, or By App. Some apps also let you control specific categories, such as calendar events or mail accounts; others provide fewer choices.
These options trade immediacy for quiet: alerts can interrupt you, Notification Center delivery keeps them available without an alert, and turning notifications off stops that app’s watch notifications. You can also swipe left on a notification on the watch, tap More, and mute it temporarily or turn it off. See Apple’s notification settings guide and how notifications are delivered.
Understand which device receives an alert
Notifications do not necessarily appear on both devices. Apple says that when your iPhone is unlocked, notifications go to the iPhone rather than the watch. When the iPhone is locked or asleep, they go to the watch unless the watch is locked. The watch’s lock state therefore matters when troubleshooting an alert that did not appear on your wrist.

Hide notification details on your wrist
To make someone tap before the full notification appears, open the iPhone’s Apple Watch app and go to My Watch > Notifications > Tap to Show Full Notification. To hide summaries while the watch is locked, turn off Show Summary When Locked in the same Notifications area. These controls affect what is displayed on the watch; they do not change an app’s access to information or its separate privacy practices. Apple documents these display options in its notification settings guide.
Choose which apps can access Health data
Health permissions are category-specific. Review them app by app and check what each compatible app can read or write, rather than assuming that one switch controls all health information.
-
On your iPhone, open Health, tap your profile, then choose Privacy > Apps.

To review permissions for apps on the watch itself, use Apple Watch > Settings > Health > Apps.
Turning off a permission limits the app’s access going forward; it does not promise to remove information the app already received. Apple’s platform controls also do not establish how a third-party app handles data under its own privacy practices. For Apple’s documented paths, see manage Health data on iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.

If Fitness Tracking appears to be missing
On iPhone, open Health > profile > Devices > Apple Watch > Privacy Settings, then check Fitness Tracking. Apple lists this as the path for reviewing that setting in its Health data guidance.
Control which sources contribute to a Health category
For an individual Health category, open that category in Health and choose Data Sources & Access. You can see contributing devices and apps, reorder sources, or turn off a third-party source. Apple says its default priority is manually entered data first, followed by data from Apple devices, then apps and Bluetooth devices. This controls which sources supply a category; it is distinct from deciding whether an app has permission to access categories at all. Apple explains both controls in its Health data guidance.
Decide whether Health data syncs with iCloud
Apple says Health information is encrypted on the device when protected by a passcode, and encrypted while stored in iCloud and in transit between iCloud and a device. Apple says end-to-end encryption requires iOS 12 or later and two-factor authentication. You can manage Health syncing and delete Health data stored in iCloud through iCloud settings.

Before deleting cloud data, consider that deleting synced Health data on one device removes it from other devices using the same Apple Account. Apple documents encryption, sync, and deletion in its Health data guidance.
Know what Apple says about Siri and Health data
Apple draws a distinction based on whether Siri recognizes a request as one to read or write Health data. Its stated policy is: “If Siri recognizes your request as a request to read or write Health app data, your Health app data is not stored or made accessible to Apple.” Apple says that if Siri does not recognize the request as a Health-data request, its default behavior applies and health information included in the request is sent to Apple servers.
On iPhone, the setting is under Settings > Apps > Health > Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri > Learn from this App, depending on the available software and labels. Related Siri Health requests have operating-system, device, and language requirements, so check Apple’s current Siri access to Health data guidance for availability and details. Do not assume every health-related phrase is treated as a recognized Health-data request.

Check whether Vitals notifications are available and useful to you
Apple describes Vitals as showing overnight heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen, and sleep duration. It says a Vitals notification is sent when at least two overnight metrics fall outside your typical range. Availability varies by watch model and area, and a notification is not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice.
Apple specifically notes that Blood Oxygen is unavailable in the Vitals app for Apple Watch models purchased in the United States on or after January 18, 2024, with part numbers ending in LW/A. Check Apple’s Vitals app availability and details for current model and region qualifications.
