There is no universal optical drive for a DIY game console. First decide whether your build is a general-purpose host that reads original discs—such as a Raspberry Pi or MiSTer—or a replacement drive installed inside one specific original console. The first route depends on USB or SATA connectivity, power, and software support; the second can depend on the console’s exact motherboard revision, connector layout, and region settings.
Choose the drive for the console architecture
A drive that connects to a Raspberry Pi or MiSTer is not interchangeable with a replacement installed in an original console. Before buying anything, identify the host or console, the software that will read the disc, the media format it supports, and the drive interface that platform accepts. Compatibility belongs to that complete setup—not to the phrase “DVD drive” or “optical drive” by itself.

Connect an optical drive to a Raspberry Pi
Use a SATA DVD drive with external power
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s build uses an internal SATA DVD drive connected to the Pi through an externally powered SATA-to-USB adapter or an externally powered enclosure. The guide describes its example this way: “A standard internal DVD-ROM drive is perfect: this build used a 2008 Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7203S SATA DVD-RW.” That is a historical example from one build, not a guarantee that every SATA DVD drive, disc, or emulator will work.

If assembling the adapter-based connection, attach both the SATA data and power connectors to the drive, connect the adapter’s USB end to the Raspberry Pi, and plug the adapter’s mains power supply into an outlet. An externally powered enclosure is an alternative. When shopping, “powered SATA to USB adapter for DVD drive” describes the category to look for; confirm the adapter supports the drive’s interface and supplies the required power.
Check power and emulation behavior
The Raspberry Pi guide warns that a bus-powered USB disc drive can draw more power than the board can readily provide. Its externally powered adapter or enclosure avoids relying on the Pi’s USB supply for the drive. A powered arrangement does not by itself establish that a particular emulator can read a particular disc: confirm support for the target media and software.

The same guide notes that some early-console emulators expect a disc to keep spinning, and that Blu-ray drive spin behavior may not suit those expectations. Treat this as a constraint of the described host-and-software path, not a universal rule for all drives, emulators, or emulation devices. The guide also includes a DOSBox CD-mounting path, but its commands and dated Raspberry Pi 4 configuration steps should not be treated as current general setup instructions.
Use a USB optical drive with MiSTer
A user report published July 26, 2026 describes physical-disc support on MiSTer through a USB optical drive. It says to enable the feature through the Update_All script’s configuration menu under “other cores.” Because this is a user report rather than a current official setup guide, verify the option and instructions against current MiSTer documentation before relying on them.

The report also says a bus-powered optical drive may need a powered USB hub if its draw exceeds what the board supplies; a drive with its own power supply avoids that particular bus-power issue. Neither the connection nor the power arrangement alone guarantees that a given disc or drive will be supported by the MiSTer setup.
Replacing an original console’s drive is a different job
PlayStation 1 example: identify the motherboard first
ArcStation’s installation guide covers a device that replaces the PlayStation 1 CD-ROM drive. It is a console-specific replacement, not a generic PC optical-drive swap. The guide explains that connector type and placement differ across motherboard revisions, and that the SCPH case model alone may not reliably identify the board revision. It directs installers to identify the board using connector placement and shield shape, then follow the matching cable instructions.

The replacement also uses a DIP switch for region and compatibility settings. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the particular board and device rather than applying another console’s pinout, cable orientation, or region settings.
Plan for safety and reversibility
Internal replacement means opening the console and handling its connectors, so follow the maker’s installation and safety instructions before starting. ArcStation warns that the PlayStation 1’s internal power supply can retain a dangerous charge even when unplugged; avoid touching the power-supply board or exposed metal. If preserving the option to restore the original hardware matters, plan for what happens to the original drive and cables before installation.

Do not infer compatibility from retail-console accessories
Sony’s support documentation says its detachable disc drive is compatible only with PS5 CFI-2000/7000 model group consoles and requires an internet connection for pairing during setup. This is a reminder that even a manufacturer-supplied detachable drive can be model-specific; it does not show that a generic PC drive will work in a DIY console.
