Frequent sleep or hibernation is not, by itself, a reason to buy a premium, unusually high-endurance SSD. First make sure the drive fits your PC and uses an interface it supports; then choose enough capacity and compare the exact model’s endurance rating and warranty. Hibernation does write saved system state to storage, but Kingston says daily hibernation has a negligible effect on SSD lifespan per year. That is vendor guidance, not a guarantee for every drive or workload.
Does hibernating or sleeping a PC wear out an SSD?
True hibernation saves the computer’s state to persistent storage, so it creates writes. Kingston describes this as writing RAM contents to storage before the computer resumes, and says daily hibernation has a negligible effect on an SSD’s lifespan per year. Treat that as Kingston’s guidance, not an independent test or a promise about every PC’s write volume. Kingston’s explanation of SSD wear and hibernation
Samsung’s historical white paper likewise describes system state being saved in hiberfil.sys and DRAM contents being copied to NAND. It discusses Windows 7-era behavior, however, so it should not be used to infer current Windows 11 hibernation-file sizing, default settings, or a particular number of writes per hibernation cycle. The available sources also do not quantify writes for every modern sleep state. Samsung’s hibernation white paper
“Sleep” is often used loosely for different power states. If your PC actually hibernates, storage writes occur; the evidence here does not establish a universal write amount for every mode called sleep. There is no special “hibernation SSD” category established by these sources.

Check that the SSD is compatible with your PC
Start with the exact PC or motherboard model, not the SSD’s advertised speed. Internal drives may be 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA, or M.2 NVMe. M.2 describes a physical form factor; it does not prove that a particular M.2 drive’s interface is supported by your computer. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for interface, supported PCIe generation, M.2 length, available slot, and any heatsink or clearance requirements. Samsung’s buying guide illustrates why model-level form factor and interface details matter. Samsung’s U.S. internal SSD buying guide
- 2.5-inch SATA: Confirm that the PC has a compatible drive bay, connector, and space for the drive.
- M.2 SATA: Confirm the motherboard supports SATA through the M.2 slot; an M.2 connector alone does not establish that it does.
- M.2 NVMe: Confirm NVMe support, the M.2 length accepted by the slot, and any PCIe-generation or heatsink requirements.
Replacement procedures vary by device and manufacturer. Check the PC’s service documentation before opening it or ordering a replacement drive.

Choose capacity for the whole workload
Size the SSD for the operating system, applications, games, and files, with headroom for normal use. System files also occupy storage; hibernation and virtual-memory files can be part of that picture. Samsung’s white paper discusses reserved space and settings for an older Windows version, but its numeric figures are not a reliable universal capacity rule for current Windows. Do not size a drive from a historical hibernation-file percentage.
If you are replacing a drive, check how much space your existing data uses and consider what you expect to add. Capacity is a practical choice based on your files and budget, not a special requirement imposed by frequent hibernation.

Compare TBW and warranty for the exact drive
TBW, or terabytes written, is a published write-endurance rating. Compare it for the specific SSD model and capacity you are considering. It is not a prediction that the drive will fail as soon as that amount is reached, and it does not let you calculate years of life without a model-specific workload.
Read the warranty terms alongside the TBW figure. Warranty coverage may be limited by time or writes, and terms can differ by product and region. For scale, Samsung’s current U.S. buying guide lists the 990 PRO with a warranty condition of five years or 600 TBW per TB of capacity for the listed models. That is a Samsung specification for those products, not a universal SSD benchmark or a target every buyer needs to meet. Samsung’s U.S. internal SSD buying guide
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use speed and power specs only after fit and capacity
Once compatibility and capacity are settled, compare interface generation, workload-relevant speed, heat, and power characteristics. Samsung’s guide lists different interface, speed, and power figures across product generations. A higher peak-speed drive is not automatically a better fit for a PC whose main concern is resuming from sleep or hibernation; do not pay extra for peak performance or endurance solely because the computer sleeps often.

For example, Samsung lists the 990 PRO as an M.2 PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 SSD in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. That makes it a useful specification example, not a universal recommendation: a PC must support the drive’s physical format and interface. The cited buying guide is for the U.S.; check local warranty terms and availability. Samsung’s U.S. internal SSD buying guide
Samsung’s regional 980 product page is another example: it lists a 1TB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 drive with up to 600 TBW and a five-year limited warranty. Confirm the terms and local availability for your region before relying on those details. Samsung 980 1TB product page
A practical SSD buying sequence
- Identify the computer: Find the exact PC or motherboard model and consult its documentation for supported drive interface, physical format, M.2 length, and heatsink or clearance requirements.
- Set capacity: Account for the operating system, applications, games, files, and room for future use. Do not rely on a historical hibernation-file reservation figure.
- Compare candidate drives: Check TBW and warranty conditions for the exact model and capacity, including regional terms and any time-or-write limit.
- Choose suitable performance: Compare interface, speed, heat, and power after confirming fit and capacity. Ordinary sleep or hibernation alone does not establish a need for a premium drive.
- Protect your data: Back up important files before replacing a drive or migrating data. Samsung’s warranty guidance also advises keeping backups.
What to search for
If your PC supports NVMe M.2, “1TB NVMe M.2 SSD” is a useful starting search phrase. Verify the exact interface and dimensions against the computer’s documentation before buying. If the PC instead requires SATA or another form factor, search for that compatible type rather than assuming an NVMe drive will work.
