An ORICO 4-bay direct-attached storage (DAS) enclosure can hold several drives and, on some models, combine them in a RAID array. But “ORICO 4-bay DAS” describes multiple products, and their interfaces, drive limits, and documented RAID modes differ. Choose by exact model, verify its manual supports the RAID level you want, and keep a separate backup: RAID redundancy is not a backup.

What does “ORICO 4-bay DAS” mean?

A DAS enclosure connects storage directly to a computer rather than serving it over a network. ORICO lists several four-bay enclosures; their shared bay count does not mean they have identical features. For example, ORICO describes the 9948RU3 as a “4Big RAID DAS Studio” with USB-B, while the 9848C3 is a “4Big DAS Solution” with USB-C. The product listings do not establish that these models share the same hardware family or RAID capabilities.

Model ORICO’s description Interface and stated rate Published drive capacity Other listed details
ORICO-9948RU3 4Big RAID DAS Studio (MacData 4Big) USB-B; 5 Gbps Up to 88 TB total; 22 TB per bay Built-in 150 W power supply; Windows, Linux, and Mac OS
ORICO-9848C3 4Big DAS Solution USB 3.2 Type-C; 10 Gbps Up to 88 TB total; 22 TB per bay Built-in 150 W power supply; Windows, Mac, and Linux
ORICO-WS400RC3 Honeycomb 3.5-inch four-bay RAID enclosure Type-C; 5 Gbps, with up to a theoretical 10 Gbps in RAID 0 Up to 16 TB per disk Supports 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs; listed RAID 0/1/3/5/10, JBOD, and Clear

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not results from a controlled comparison or independent performance tests. The 10 Gbps RAID 0 figure for the WS400RC3 is theoretical, not a measured throughput result. See ORICO’s listings for the 9948RU3, 9848C3, and WS400RC3.

Does a 4-bay DAS need RAID?

No. Four bays describe how many drives the enclosure can hold; RAID is an optional way of organizing drives, and the available modes depend on the model. If you only need separate attached drives, you do not have to create a RAID array. If you want a combined volume or redundancy, first confirm that the exact enclosure’s documentation lists the mode you intend to use.

What RAID level should you use in a 4-bay enclosure?

There is no single right choice for every four-bay enclosure. ORICO’s 95RU3-series manual lists RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 3, RAID 5, RAID 10, Big, and Normal modes for that series’ four- and five-bay models. That list applies to the documented 95RU3 series; it should not be assumed to describe the 9948RU3, 9848C3, WS400RC3, or every ORICO enclosure. Check the manual for the model you own before selecting a mode.

For readers considering RAID 5, the general protection claim is limited: RAID 5 is designed to tolerate one drive failure. Seagate’s RAID-level guidance describes RAID 5 as protection against a single drive failure; it is general RAID guidance, not a test of an ORICO enclosure. A second drive failure or another data-loss event can still leave files unavailable or lost. Seagate’s RAID-level documentation explains the general distinction.

Will RAID 5 protect files if one hard drive fails?

RAID 5 is intended to keep an array available through a single drive failure. That does not guarantee recovery in every situation, and it does not protect against multiple drive failures, accidental deletion, corruption, theft, or failure of the enclosure itself. Treat the single-drive tolerance as one layer of resilience, not a promise that files are safe.

Is RAID a backup?

No. RAID organizes drives within the enclosure; it does not create an independent copy of your files. Maintain a separate backup of important data, ideally on storage that is not continuously dependent on the same enclosure. This matters even when an array has redundancy, because RAID does not cover every cause of data loss.

ORICO 4 Bay 20Gbps RAID Hard Drive Enclosure USB 3.2 Gen2X2
  • Completely Upgraded Chip: The JMS591 Chip has been upgraded, enabling a transition from SATA 2.0 to SATA 3.0. This delivers a significant leap in core performance. Combined with the high-speed USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface, it greatly improves the efficiency of large file transfers. (Due to inherent bandwidth limitations of Thunderbolt (3/4/5), the maximum available bandwidth for storage devices is 10Gbps. Therefore, when connected via Thunderbolt, the enclosure cannot reach its full 20Gbps speed - actual transfer speeds will be around 10Gbps. However, USB4 natively supports 20Gbps bandwidth, so connecting the enclosure to a USB4 port can fully achieve 20Gbps.)
  • 6 RAID Modes: Supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 10, JBOD, and Normal modes to meet various storage needs. It is also compatible with RAID arrays configured with older chipsets, allowing existing users to migrate data directly without rebuilding the array, thereby reducing upgrade costs. This enables more efficient storage configurations and comprehensive data protection. (When setting up a RAID array, it is recommended to use new drives. Since configuring or changing the RAID mode will erase the contents of the hard drives, please back up important data before using old drives.)
  • 104 TB of Data Storage: Supports 3.5-inch SATA hard drives with a capacity of up to 26 TB per drive, for a total capacity of 104 TB, easily meeting the high storage demands of video producers
  • Multi-Layer Cooling&Quiet Operation: ORICO 4 Bay HDD Features a built-in 45dB low-noise fan, aluminum alloy construction, and a large-area cooling grille for efficient and rapid heat dissipation, ensuring the hard drive operates stably at low temperatures for extended periods. Supports hot-swapping to extend the hard drive’s service life
  • High-Performance Security Protection: HDD Enclosure built-in 150W power supply ensures smooth data transfer when reading from multiple hard drives; no need for an additional large power adapter safe and stable

Which hard drives fit an ORICO 4-bay DAS?

Compatibility is model-specific. Confirm the supported form factor, drive interface, per-drive capacity, total capacity, and operating-system support in the exact model’s documentation before buying drives. For example, the WS400RC3 listing specifies 3.5-inch SATA HDDs and SSDs and up to 16 TB per disk; the 9948RU3 and 9848C3 listings each state up to 22 TB per bay and 88 TB total. These are manufacturer-stated limits, not independently verified capacities.

How to check a model before setting up an array

  1. Identify the complete model number. Do not rely on a general “four-bay ORICO” label or infer features from another enclosure.
  2. Open that model’s product documentation. Confirm the supported RAID modes and any mode-selection or setup instructions. The 95RU3 manual is relevant to its listed 9528RU3, 9548RU3, and 9558RU3 models, not a universal ORICO manual: 95RU3 Series manual.
  3. Match drives to the enclosure. Check form factor, SATA compatibility where specified, per-bay limit, and total capacity against the exact product listing.
  4. Check the host connection. Verify that the computer has a compatible port and operating system. The listed USB rates distinguish connection specifications; they do not by themselves establish real-world transfer speed.
  5. Keep a separate copy of important files. Set up a backup independently of the RAID array before relying on the enclosure for important data.
