Choose an on-device AI assistant by starting with the tasks you need—rewriting, message summaries, speech translation, personal-file search, screen understanding, or actions across apps—not with the “on-device” label. Then verify your exact device, operating-system version, memory, storage, language and country, and check which features stay local versus using a company’s servers. Apple, Google and Samsung all combine local and cloud processing, so no assistant is automatically private or offline for every task.
This guide gives you a practical selection process, documents the current Apple Intelligence, Gemini Intelligence and Galaxy AI requirements, and explains what the available evidence does—and does not—show about computers, privacy, speed and battery life.
What “on-device AI assistant” actually means
An on-device assistant runs at least some model inference on the phone or computer’s processor instead of sending every request to a remote data center. Local inference can reduce the amount of content leaving the device, work when connectivity is poor, and respond without waiting for a round trip to a server. It also consumes local resources: capable neural-processing hardware, system memory, storage for model files and battery power.
The phrase is not a guarantee that an entire product is local. A single assistant may use a small local model for a quick rewrite, a private cloud service for a long summary, and a regular internet service for a web answer. Apple says many Apple Intelligence models run entirely on the device, while its documentation identifies server-side models and daily limits for some features. Samsung labels some Galaxy AI functions as on-device and others as cloud-based. Google’s Android documentation describes isolated local processing for certain tasks but warns that an app can still transfer data or collect it.

Therefore, evaluate processing per task. Ask: what information does the feature need, where is it processed, can cloud use be disabled, and what stops working when it is disabled?
Start with a task-and-data checklist
Write down the three to five jobs you will perform most often. The assistant that handles those jobs on your device and in your preferred language is a better choice than one with a longer marketing feature list.
Common tasks to list
- Writing: rewrite an email, change tone, proofread, or create a short reply.
- Reading: summarize a message thread, notification, document or web page.
- Language: translate text or speech during a conversation.
- Personal context: search mail, photos, notes or files using natural language.
- Screen understanding: identify what is visible and suggest the next step.
- Actions: create a reminder, draft a message or move information between apps.
Classify the information involved
- Low sensitivity: a public fact, a shopping list or a generic rewrite.
- Personal: private messages, calendar entries, photos, contacts and location signals.
- High sensitivity: health, financial, legal, work-confidential or customer information.
For each task, decide whether local-only processing is mandatory, merely preferred, or unnecessary. If you handle confidential work, an assistant that cannot clearly show its processing path is a poor fit even when its headline feature is available.

Compare assistants on six decision axes
| Axis | What to verify | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Task coverage | The exact feature, app integration and supported input type on your device | A feature may exist in an announcement but not in your model, language or favorite app. |
| Processing location | Local, private-cloud or other server processing for each feature; whether a local-only switch exists | “On-device” can describe only one part of a workflow. |
| Compatibility | Model, operating-system release, RAM or unified memory, chipset and free storage | AI models are hardware- and software-dependent; a nearby model name does not imply support. |
| Privacy controls | Connected apps, screen/context permissions, account linkage, retention statements and per-feature controls | Personal context is useful only if you accept the data sources it can read. |
| Availability | Country, language, age limits, beta status and subscription or usage limits | Rollouts differ by market and can change after a device purchase. |
| Support horizon | How long the device is expected to receive operating-system and AI updates | A supported model can lose practical value if updates stop during your ownership period. Verify the manufacturer’s current policy before ranking devices on this factor. |
Check hardware and software before buying
Do not infer compatibility from a product family. Open the manufacturer’s current requirements page for the exact model and compare the installed operating system, memory, processor and available storage.
Apple requirements
Apple’s current requirements list Apple Intelligence on iPhone 16 models or later and on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, along with selected iPad and Mac models. Feature-specific requirements apply. Apple states that some newer, higher-memory configurations need up to 14 GB of local storage for Apple Intelligence models, while other supported devices need up to 8 GB. Those figures are device-storage allowances for the models and features Apple documents, not a promise that every feature uses that amount at all times.
Check that the device and Siri language match a supported language, that the operating system is new enough, and that enough storage remains after installing the models. Apple’s list also varies by platform, language and region.

- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Google requirements
Google restricts Gemini Intelligence features to devices with on-device Nano models, at least 12 GB of RAM, a qualified system-on-chip and Google’s quality criteria. Google cautions that availability varies by device, country and language. A phone can run a general Gemini app yet lack Gemini Intelligence features that require local Nano models.

Samsung requirements
Samsung’s Galaxy AI support list includes Galaxy S26 and other current and earlier models, but support is feature- and software-specific. Read the list for the exact model, operating-system version and country. Do not assume that a supported Galaxy phone runs every Galaxy AI function locally: Samsung separates local and cloud functions.
Computer requirements
Apple’s Apple Intelligence requirements include compatible Mac models. The available documentation does not establish a balanced, current comparison of fully local assistants on Windows, macOS and Linux. Microsoft Phone Link documents phone-to-PC integration for supported phones and Windows systems, but that integration is not evidence of a fully on-device Windows assistant. Treat a computer claim as unverified until the operating-system maker identifies the local model, supported hardware and processing behavior.
Understand Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
Apple is the clearest example of a mixed architecture. Apple Support says, “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” The qualification matters: “in many cases” is not an all-features guarantee.
What to check
- Confirm that your iPhone, iPad or Mac appears on Apple’s eligible-device list.
- Install the required operating-system release and leave enough storage for the model files—up to 14 GB on certain higher-memory configurations or up to 8 GB on other supported devices, according to Apple’s current requirements.
- Set the device and Siri to matching supported languages.
- Check your country before relying on a feature. Apple’s requirements documentation lists regional exclusions and feature differences.
Siri AI rollout caveats
Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes Siri AI as a beta rollout in English on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27 for Apple Intelligence-enabled devices. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support is coming the following month. It also says Siri AI is initially unavailable in the European Union on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS, and that Apple Intelligence features are unavailable in mainland China while regulatory requirements are addressed. Some server-side features may have daily usage limits. These are rollout-sensitive details, so confirm them immediately before purchase or deployment.
Understand Gemini Intelligence on Android
Gemini Intelligence is not simply an app download. Google’s requirements call for an on-device Nano model, 12 GB or more of RAM, a qualified SoC and additional quality criteria. Even a phone that meets the memory requirement can differ by country, language or model.

Review connected apps one by one
On an eligible phone, Google lets you decide whether Gemini can connect to selected services such as Gmail, Photos or Keep. Connecting an app gives the assistant personal context but also expands the information it can access. Enable only sources that support a task you actually perform, and revisit the choices after changing accounts or devices.
Treat Proactive Assistance as a separate permission decision
Google says Proactive Assistance can use details on the screen and signals from the device. That can make suggestions more useful, but it is broader than asking a question in a blank chat. Review the permission and privacy explanation, then disable the capability if screen or device context is not appropriate for your work.
Local does not mean the app is harmless
Google’s Android Enterprise guidance describes Android Private Compute Core as isolated and without internet access for relevant local tasks. The same guidance warns that software using local AI can still handle information in a way that transfers it to the cloud or collects it. Assess the app’s behavior and permissions, not only the location of one model.
Understand Samsung Galaxy AI’s local-only control
Samsung explicitly distinguishes processing locations. Its examples of on-device functions include translation, ambient wallpapers and selected Google Messages composition or suggestion features. Examples Samsung identifies as cloud-based include automatic formatting, summarizing, corrections and image editing.
How to choose the Samsung privacy setting
- Open Settings and search for Galaxy AI (the exact menu wording can vary by software version).
- Open the data-processing or intelligence setting and locate the option to process data only on the device.
- Turn on the local-only setting if preventing cloud processing is more important than access to cloud-based functions.
- Test each feature you need. Samsung says restricting processing can limit or remove functions that require its cloud service.
Because Samsung’s supported-feature list changes by model and software version, verify the precise phone and feature before buying. A current compatible Galaxy phone is a supportable example of hardware with an explicit local-processing control, not proof that every Galaxy AI feature is offline.
Use a repeatable privacy review
Perform this review during setup and whenever an assistant gains a major update.

- List data sources. Record which mail, photo, note, messaging, calendar, file, screen and location sources the assistant can read.
- Separate local and cloud tasks. In the feature’s privacy details, identify the model or service used for each operation.
- Check account linkage. Determine whether personal context is tied to a consumer account, work account or device-only profile.
- Inspect retention and deletion controls. Note how prompts, outputs and connected-app content are stored and how to remove them.
- Test with harmless data. Use a non-sensitive note to see whether a feature works in airplane mode and what message appears when it cannot.
- Restrict by default. Turn off unused app connections, screen context and proactive suggestions; enable them only when a specific workflow requires them.
- Recheck after updates. New features can introduce new cloud dependencies or permissions.
For business use, also review the software supply chain and the organization’s mobile-management policy. Local inference reduces one exposure path but does not replace application security, account controls or vendor review.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTest offline behavior without fooling yourself
“Works offline” should mean a defined task completes with network access disabled, not that the whole assistant has no online dependency.
- Install the latest supported operating-system and assistant updates while connected.
- Record the exact task, input language and app—for example, rewriting a note or translating a downloaded conversation.
- Enable airplane mode and turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if the feature might use a nearby connection.
- Repeat the task and capture whether it completes, degrades, queues or displays a cloud-required message.
- Restore connectivity and check whether the result changes or a pending request is uploaded.
Run this test separately for writing, summarization, translation, personal search and actions. A local rewrite does not establish that a cloud-backed image edit or web answer is local.
Decide whether a phone or computer is the better host
Choose the phone when
- Your main inputs are calls, messages, photos, speech and on-screen mobile content.
- You need translation or suggestions while moving between locations.
- Your phone meets the documented memory, chipset and storage requirements.
Choose the computer when
- Your work centers on long documents, large local files or a keyboard-and-pointer workflow.
- You need a supported Mac model for Apple Intelligence and have enough unified memory and storage for the required models.
- You can verify an actual local assistant for your Windows or Linux configuration rather than assuming that phone integration provides one.
Use both, deliberately
A phone may handle private, immediate tasks locally while a computer handles document editing. Decide whether context is synchronized between them. Cross-device convenience can also widen the number of accounts and apps that process the same information.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Buying by brand or model family
Problem: A nearby model may lack the required RAM, SoC, storage or software release.
Correction: Check the exact model number and configuration against the current support page.
Assuming every feature is local
Problem: A local translation feature is taken as proof that summaries, corrections or image edits are local.
Correction: Map processing location feature by feature and use a local-only switch where available.
Enabling every personal data source
Problem: Connecting mail, photos, notes and screen context by default creates access you may never need.
Correction: Add one source for one workflow, then remove it when the workflow ends.
Confusing app integration with local inference
Problem: Phone-to-PC integration or a cloud assistant is presented as a fully local computer assistant.
Correction: Require documentation of the local model, hardware and offline behavior for the computer itself.
Trusting a benchmark that does not exist
Problem: Choosing on an unverified claim about accuracy, speed or battery life.
Correction: No independent cross-platform testing of accuracy, latency, battery drain or offline performance was established for this comparison. Use documented capabilities or conduct a controlled test with your own tasks.
Ignoring rollout boundaries
Problem: A feature works in one country or language but not yours, or is still in beta.
Correction: Verify region, language, age or account restrictions and the date of the support information immediately before purchase.
What the current evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The documented differences support a careful fit decision, not a universal winner. Apple provides broad device eligibility and explicitly qualifies which models run locally. Google sets a clear 12 GB RAM and Nano-model threshold for Gemini Intelligence and exposes app and context choices. Samsung offers an unusually direct local-only processing control while acknowledging that some functions disappear or change when cloud processing is restricted.

There is no reliable, independent cross-platform ranking here for answer quality, response time, battery consumption or offline performance. Those results depend on model versions, languages, thermal conditions, app integrations and software updates. Treat a manufacturer’s feature description as a compatibility statement, not as a performance benchmark.
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Have I named the exact tasks and apps I will use?
- Does the exact phone or computer meet the stated model, operating-system, RAM, chipset and storage requirements?
- Which of my required tasks are local, and which use a server?
- Can I disable cloud processing, and what features would I lose?
- Have I reviewed Gmail, Photos, Keep, screen, location and other context permissions individually?
- Are my country, language, account type and age eligible?
- Have I tested the required task with connectivity disabled?
- Will the device continue receiving the updates needed during my planned ownership?
The best on-device assistant is the one that passes this checklist for your own workflow. Choose the smallest set of permissions and the least cloud dependence that still delivers the tasks you value, and recheck the answer whenever the operating system or assistant changes.
